I live in a part of Abuja where we can't boast of 12hours power supply and the saddening part is 2 minutes walk down my street, they enjoy steady power supply, at least 20 -22hours supply daily. I have a friend there, so I go to his place few times to charge my laptops.

I use two laptops to edit and produce audio podcasts for my clients and the laptops have a combined power of about 7hours.

There is also a 2.5KVa generator at home that I often use. I plan buying a UPS this month or next that has at least, 10hours battery juice.

Worst in Portharcourt where I live and their bill kept increasing every month , from 8000 Naira in October 2018, last month it was 21000 Naira and this month it was 31000 Naira that is after evaluation by PHED and my estimated bill put at 16000 Naira. The manager was short of words but acknowledged that there bill was in excess and would be reconciled.

Let me say that we have at least, 12 hours light daily in where I stay. But there are also days we do go for 24 hours without light,especially if there is a fault with the light.

My laptop's battery lasts for approximately 4 hours if I'm connected to the internet. If I'm not connected to the internet, it can last for up to 6 to 7 hours.

Now, I resume work everyday around 10 Am with my laptop's battery and before the end of the 4 to 7 hours that the battery lasts, there would be light (all things being equal).

Then I would charge and work at the same time. Normally they would take the light around 3 to 5pm and by then I would be done with what I'm doing. And if I'm not done, I would use my laptop's battery to finish up.

At night, thy would being the light around 7,8, or 9pm and it stays till around 4 or 5 am the net morning.

So, on a good day, I don't have to run generator because I hate the sound.

I am not "everybody else", and freelancing is quite different from other traditional jobs and self-employed entrepreneurs.

As a full-time freelancer, one isn't restricted by location and can easily relocate to more favorable places (to have access to more stable power and cut electricity costs, for instance) compared to other conventional 9–5 workers.

Threads like this can provide key information for freelancers on how to be more productive by exploring alternative means of power source.

Well, I didn't expect you to understand this. Critical thinking and empathy are not the fortes of a sizeable percentage of Nigerians.

The answers here are not enough. Guys please if you suggest one gets these: UPS, inverter, generator plus laptop power bank; kindly tell us the cost and how these things are used. Also, the issue of internet should also be considered. Data is expensive in Nigeria, how do you guys also overcome this? Routers, special services? I would really appreciate any information. I have a power bank setup that I bought from Leverage12 and it's been serving me well ever since although not always.

That is because it is charged by a solar panel. And once there is no sun, it doesn't charge. But on a full charge, it can take me through the day till evening.

I equally have a solar rechargeable standing fan that I charge once and takes me through the day so I try to limit the number of gadgets plugged in at once so that the battery does not go flat.

Once the laptop charges full, I put off all the sockets and allow the power bank to recharge. Once the battery is running down, I charge it again. That way, I'm always on.

I will later need to scale up as I want to add more laptops or desktop computers and more staff.

It is appalling to note that in a country blessed with, hydro, solar and thermal power resources we are still battling with erratic power supply.
Where there is a will there is a way. Our problems are not the people no it is the wicked leaders we have, they do not care they are selfish.

That is how one former gov now a minister was bragging that he will fix the power issue in six months. Now they have given him the power all that he does is to lecture us on how to use our own electrity we provided by our small generator.

Buy Solar + Inverter + battery and you'd forever be grateful to God, because some fools are quick to write petition to the police or EFCC if you run a 24/7 Gen lifestyle to stay online, and they dont see you going for a 9-5 desk job.

Epileptic power has really dealt with me as a freelancer. You can add to that epileptic internet service. I have lost jobs because I couldn't meet deadlines, after spending so much on data and fuelling the generator. And sometimes the generator breaks down too!
My take?
1. Get good power banks both for your phones/tablets and for your laptop.
2. Have a good generator on standby.
3. Don't accept jobs with crazy deadlines, even if the payment looks tempting.
4. Use a shared office location with regular electricity (if available in your area).
5. Get solar power/inverter if you can afford it.
6. Outsource jobs to other reliable freelancers
7. Finally, you can move to a place with regular power supply, if possible.

I can't stand generators.

I live in Abuja and the power situation is fair.

I am currently charging my laptop with my yellow box as I type.

The laptop's power consumes about 79w which is almost larger than the output of the solar inverter.

I have a Hisense tv set. It is eco-friendly. Its power consumption is about 50w, so it fits comfortably with my free tv decoder, on the solar inverter.

The devil lives in Nigeria what d'you need light for when the angel of darkness lives amongst us? Even the combined prayer powers of our Jet travelling pastors will never transform this country.

Nigeria is dead and gone. Next Option: Bail out! Anywhere is better than Nigeria as it is now.

Power hasn't really been much of an issue to me. Light is very constant here. We get power for more than 12 hours daily. On bad days, it stays for 4-5 hours. However, recently I have noticed a declination in power.


I believe it's due to the constant rain and strong winds these days. Few days back, NEPA didn't bring light for a full day. I was already planning to repair the gen when they came through. The last time I even used a generator was July 2018. (During world cup). I'm positive that in the next couple of months, we'd continue having our steady 20-23 hours power.

Is he forcing you to respond?

Well I think as far as power is concern I believe the best option at moment is SOLAR. But you have to get it ACCURATELY from the BEGINNING else you will be in for a huge loss. The initial setup capital is usually much, but it pays off big time on the long run. I have been on solar for about five years now and with No regret. Although, I have a Gen (just in case), but I hardly make use of it (5 to 8 times in a year usually during bad weather).

Firstly, you need a good design from a good reliable expert. Skip this step or do it poorly and sorry will be your last name. Major ish is there are a lot of substandard product and loads of quacks in the field.

Although i haven't started mine, but the first to do is having a skill for example graphic designing web development or programming, writing. After that, open an account with either fiverr, upwork tthese are the ones i can remember.

Lenovo laptops seem to have the lowest power consumption in my view(no competent research to back this up). My system is a Sony and it consumes about 79w.

My brother has a Lenovo which consumes 50w.

I previously had a Hp mini which consumed about 40w, but it didn't have a disk drive, like all minis.
