Says a man who has no degree and came to power initially with guns It's unfortunate that Nigerians forget easily if not Buhari would never have become a civilian President Same person stopped feeding of university students, laundry and stipends. If you go to any first generation university you'll see the large canteens abandoned or repurposed. 3 Likes |

qanda: ....and whose fault is it that they lack digital and computing skills? Am I a computer science student that needs to understand several programme languages? In my university I was taught how to use a computer well enough. Excel PowerPoint and other basic computer software plus several programs necessary for data analysis in my field. The government should restructure their system to include things like these as other countries have done. |

StevenOba: I have nothing against Buhari and during d last election,I was shouting his name up and down. But on ds statement,I will disagree with him..d summary of his statement is "u people should not think u arrive,u never arrive ooo, start thinking of wat to do with your certificate and d certificate is not even anything"....... By that statement,he had sent a wrong signal to d student population.I know those that are working in d north to educate d Almajiris and reduce d illiteracy level in d north. We all know d reality but d president saying this into our face is absolutely wrong.... The eldorado he is saying is not waiting for d Nigerian graduates is waiting for his own children. How did his son got money to buy power bike of around N5m....If dt amount is giving to some of d graduates, give them few years, they will build an empire. 1 Like |

famouscargo4u: Not guaranteed wealth but are we even guaranteed basic necessities of Life! It's a very bad statement from a President of a failing country. His statement is wrong! The educational system is flawed. We grew up with the mentality that the vocational skills are for drop outs and all we need to secure a better life and afford basic necessities of life is to go to the university and all but that was all a lie! Even some of our parent won't even let us learn any handiwork cuz they also believed in the system until now. Now, there are so many graduates with no adequate organizations or bodies to employ them. For example, where do you expect a graduate of insurance to work when people and many companies can't afford insurance? When the insurance companies are dying because of the poor state of the economy? Or should I say Geography? Or Sociology? Or psychology? Education? history and international studies? Languages? And so on.. Nobody is asking for wealth. Everyone wants to be able to afford basic things in life. Do you think having a car is luxury or a necessity? If you think it's luxury, then I can't argue with you anymore. 3 Likes |

StevenOba: I get your point, but I believe the president should only be making such comments if he's doing anything to change things. I study in Europe, and I must tell you that studying here changes everything about one's mentality. The style is practical and straight to the point. For instance, by the time I graduate, I should have done at least one year of serious internship in a real life setting relating to my field. I use modern equipments and just as a formality I'm made to use the older equipments to at least know how they work. I will likely just sneak out with a 4.something GpA but inside me I'm so confident that I know what I'm doing. The average first class Nigerian cannot make these comments cos the system is a mess and opportunities are too far between. I have classmates that are in school cheating their way through, but las las as long as they understand basics that will earn them their degree, they'd still earn a decent living unlike in Nigeria. So the president should not throw stones, he's a huge part of the problem. The least he could do is appoint competent and innovative people in positions 1 Like |

baqina: You spoke from an uneducated perspective. What is education? A tool that empowers an individual to improve himself/herself - Prof Sophie Oluwole. Many of us get education but beyond that fail to achieve the goal for self-improvement. What is self-improvement? Anything that adds value to the dignity and attainment of security and self-worth. A graduate that goes to get training and becomes a plumber or a electrician will soon become self-sufficient in his ability to have his own apartment, feed himself, date and marry and keep a household. His mate out on the street roaming around with his resume, knocking doors looking for employment will soon land in nairaland looking for financial assistance to feed. Get the message and dont allow partisan politics to block your reasoning. Buhari is on point! 1 Like |

baqina:Maybe you didn't read the article because you just repeated same thing. He said "university education" meaning carrying degree without content in you will take you no where and that's the bitter truth, you are am engineer who don't understand anything about an engine or a computer scientist by degree but don't understand even basic programming language. Truth is Nigeria university system needs urgent review and total overhauling of curriculum |

famouscargo4u:People need to horn their skills and the government should provide the platform for these skills to be displayed and profitable to the society and those who have them. In developed countries, if you are talented in playing chess, the platform and cash juicy tournaments to demonstrate and develop your talent and tour the world are abundant but over here, its pathetic. Why is it that in soccer, African players are usually the victims of fraudulent football agents? Where is the official body to put such agents in check? People have their parts to play and the government have their parts to play. When there are no platforms, people lose incentive. There are no serious Physics research facilities in this country and no great jobs for most Physicists hence many Nigerians don't see knowing advanced Physics as important. The stifling of skilled people by the government in not creating platforms makes people to lose incentive in developing certain skills and it makes people think all about money. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. Some people are better off with a job. If you go to America, you see STEM graduates(especially physics, maths, engineering and medical students) carrying themselves with pride. Why? Because there are good paying jobs for them that gives them the incentive to keep developing their skills and at the end of the day, they keep the level of science and technology of their countries at the highest level. Little surprise that they win Nobel Prizes and students take pride in studying these courses. What hope is there for physicists and engineers in this country? To teach in secondary schools? To work in banks? So what are the incentives to attain knowledge of Physics and Engineering at the highest level? Little wonder we lag in scientific and technological innovation and we depend on other countries for our phones, cars, TV, cameras etc. and this doesn't look like stopping anytime soon. Let's not kid ourselves. Citizens will horn their skills but when government doesn't create platforms/jobs for many skills to thrive, people lose incentive. Government needs to be serious about human capital. Our hospitals and university facilities in science and engineering departments are deteriorating and where never sufficient to begin with. In medical school, I was told by the histology lab attendant that the slides we were using are old slides. The hotels are deteriorating with no sign of improvement. Government needs to step up and they are lagging by a million miles. People need to horn their skills, I agree but government must take education and human capital seriously by creating platforms/well paying jobs if academic knowledge must flourish and benefit society. These platforms must also be improved and upgraded continually. It's a shame that doctors are living the country but nothing is being done about that. Does this government look serious to you? Even our sports sector is laughable. Someone who is talented in playing baseball in America can become a multimillionaire but would that be the case in Nigeria? It's easy for the government to brand citizens lazy and blame them for not having the apt skill but why don't they look at themselves and ask "what incentive and platforms do we create?", "the existing facilities that are insufficient are deteriorating, what have we done about that?" Blaming the citizens is like the government blaming a man for not having the skill to skip a pothole when they could have fixed the pothole. Though graduates are not entitled to a job but any serious government and society would take human capital and platforms/job creation very seriously. In the long run, it is a win for the government, citizens and society. 6 Likes |

Built a plain website when I was much younger with basic HTML and CSS but didn't enjoy the whole coding thing so i left it and switched to video editing and photography which I love. I am exposed to all the technological equipments necessary for my work as part of my studies. I use advanced softwares that you can't even dream of operating if you open them. All of you shouting IT up and down cos you built a website and two mobile apps are just very funny. You think sitting in front of a computer makes you a genius and every other person is ignorant. those saying the president is right are not totally wrong as well as those saying the president is wrong. the truth is that such a statement shouldn't be uttered by the president of a country. if you liken the situation to the CEO of a multinational saying coming to work in my company won't get you your full salary at the end of the month, the stock of that company will fall before the close of the market. at this point it's not about the statement, it's about the person making the statement. even though he is saying the youth shouldn't relax because they have a degree, he shouldn't be saying it directly because it gives a negative vibe. 1 Like |
