His father (elder brother to the late Bayero) was the king before he was deposed and Ado Bayero enthroned in his stead. With Sanusi as emir, the emirship only returned to where it was about seventy years ago.

However, my personal opinion is that no Fulani has a legitimate cultural right to claim the Kano throne because they stole it from the traditional Hausa kings (Habe); my kin. I hope the Fulani emirate crumbles someday and my kin (Kutumbawa) returned to their rightful place.
