A Nigerian writer Sugabelly has explained the reason why a child should take the woman’s surname, instead of the man’s.

In her opinion, she believes the pains of childbirth are enough for the the child to be named after the mother and not the father.

You cannot be sensible in this your opinion, as long as your husband's name replaces your father's name when you get married. As a married woman, you bear your husband's name because you belong to him, your child bears the same name because the child belongs to you and your husband.

3 questions for you:
1. Why do you change your name when you get married?
2. If your child does not bear your husband's name, will the child have right over the father's property?
