Evangkatsoulis:you are insane to call 347 too low. When ppl try multiple times just to cross 200. Anything above 240 is very good 300+ is phenomenal. 1 Like |

AreaFada2: Yea. I that has not been properly handled. I read govt actually made some commendable efforts at damage control to unify us again. But what do you suppose govt does? Honouring it with a Biafra public holiday might actually do more harm than good. Don't you think? |

Evangkatsoulis: You have to put in perspective what we have to work with. I think the best westerners would probably be able to score a perfect score on Jamb. Even moderately smart Americans and Asians should score a perfect score on Jamb. Jamb is not a really difficult exam and the answers are not even that close, they are obvious if you have an idea of the topic. The problem is that the typical Nigerian education is sub standard, and coupled with our low IQ, it's easy to see why a 347 is incredible. Anything above 250 is top 3 percentile and that ain't something to sniff at in Nigeria. Also, JAMB is a knowledge based exam, so people with good/eidetic memories would probably do better. In addition, the exam is written in a foreign language. Even though, we speak English in Nigeria, most of us still think in our native language and something is lost during translation to English. I agree, giftedness cannot be determined, in the Nigerian context, based on Jamb score. We have a gifted school in Suleja, and none of the students do very well in Jamb. When you look at the west, there is consistency. The same gifted students in primary school, do well in secondary school and go on to the Oxbridges, Williams, Swarthmores of this world. And there is correlation between parents income and academic achievement; in Nigeria, there is an inverse relationship. I don't understand how people with little resources can out do people with money and access. I think the answer is obvious; massive cheating in rural areas. In Nigeria, there is no consistency; you see malnourished poor students veith uneducated parents doing well in Jamb, and these same students do horribly in WAEC, and these students have no antecedents at the secondary and primary School level. It beats me how poor students from no name schools do better than folks from places like Kings college, Loyola etc. The system is effed up and I personally do not think the kids with 347 can reproduce it. Doesn't take anything away from him though. |

Re: JAMB: Ekene Franklin Scores Highest In 2019 UTME With 347 by Evangkatsoulis: 7:11pm On May 11, 2019 |
paulnewplay: Harder by what metric? It is a knowledge-based exam with recommended textbooks for each subjects. Questions for each subject do not bypass the listed books. Your chemistry is your new school chem, comprehensive. Your biology is your essential biology, modern biology. Your physics is your new school physics, essential physics, comprehensive physics, P.N. Okeke. Your math is your further math by Odili, new general, additional math by Godman. These questions are drawn from these books, and anyone with an understanding of the topics should be able to understand those shallow questions. These books combined do not have up to 20000 pages and know many geniuses the US who would clear such materials in matter of hours or at worse, days. 347 means dude failed at least 26 questions out of 250. Not impressed. |

Evangkatsoulis: We do a federally administered exam after primary school. They just pick the best students, based on scores! The exam is knowledge based, prioritizing rote over critical thinking skills. The ask questions like : who is the secretary general of the UN? What's the meaning of ECOWAS etc Also, there is a lot of corruption cos it's free if you are admitted so parents go all out to help their children, by hook or by crook. |
Re: JAMB: Ekene Franklin Scores Highest In 2019 UTME With 347 by pressplay411(m): 7:24pm On May 11, 2019 |
goodnessme1: Of course they did. Not to satisfaction but they actually did. Reconciliation and Rehabilitation is why Igbo's are all over the country carrying out all their civic rights. Except Presidency, and truly that's because Igbo's carry an air of breaking the nation and re-establishing Biafra even at the slightest agitation. Reconstruction is likewise there, but Igbo's won't be satisfied until they see ports. Which honestly govt is being wise about. The level of abuse the import and export industry is experiencing (mostly by igbos businessmen) even when it's not in the East is a premonition to the decadence inherent if constructed there. |

pressplay411: A lot more could have been done. And can still be done. This is where the youth should focus. Not Afonja & Ipob name calling. The bolded depends on which perspective one sees it from. Compensation for loss of Igbo people's assets and bank accounts was grossly inadequate. Yes, money was initially tight after the war. But by 1972 oil was booming and by 1973 Gulf crises led to oil price hike. Money was flowing. Udoji award to workers could have been halved. The rest going into more compensation for Igbo people. Despite the "No victor, no vanquished" declaration of Gowon, the body language and general attitude of FG showed otherwise. It took Shagari govt, after 13 years exile to pardon Ojukwu. A major mistake. There should have been a national conference on Biafra war much earlier. Where all parties can express their views freely. And to find lasting solutions to prevent such secession bids in the future. Because FG failed to "own" the civil war narrative in a way acceptable to all, various groups now capitalise on that lingering sense of injustice, pain and perceived marginalization. We cannot deny that some of those who have distinguished themselves the most doing national assignments are and were Igbo people. Like Jaja Wachuku, Jerome Udoji, Prof H. Nwosu of NECON/Electoral Commission, Dora Akinuli, Joy Ogwu, etc. So continued marginalisation is our collective loss. Civil War Remembrance day would be about tribute to those who perished on both sides collectively? Why would that be a bad thing? If we have not civilised to the point of doing so without causing problems, then we have a long way to go. 3 Likes |

Evangkatsoulis: We only have one. It's in Suleja. Not world class obviously, but very few Nigerians appreciate esoteric skills like visuospatial reasoning, logic, etc Even in JAMB, most Nigerians think it is our equivalent of SAT, which it is not, visuospatial skill is not tested. Logic is not tested outrightly. Even the maths section is purely rote. The verbal section tested is a joke, compared to the SAT. But you can only give what you have, most people think these exams are hard because they have not been adequately prepared for them. |
