i love that you are ambitious...many Africans especially Nigerians even with their thousands of degree are always satisfied doing menial jobs abroad..according to them it is good. i dont know why they think it is good but that is the lowest self esteem and slavery mentality very common among Nigerians...truth be said, if you wanna be recognised for your work, move back to Nigeria but also remember that you will also have to work hard like anybody in nigeria to have a good life.

Your orientation is too pessimistic for my liking, in fact your mindset is directly correlated to your predicament. People gave you options of U.K, Canada and you've shot down every suggestion because of your preconceived notions. Let me tell you it is not easy to find or keep professional jobs anywhere, yea you have a degree, SO WHAT? Millions of people have the same degree, millions more have the work experience, so tell me why should THEY PICK YOU OVER THEM? What separates you from the herd? The opportunities you are looking for can be found in germany, U.K or Canada, better leave that mindset that Africans are lowest on the totem pole when it comes to professional jobs, that's pure hogwash! Do you even network? Have you volunteered at organizations? Sometimes it's not the job that matters but getting one foot in the door. You can start at entry level and get promoted easily because of your degree and work ethics. My friend, WAKE UP!

It's not pure hogwash. In Europe by law, the citizens of a country are first considered before other EU nationals then other citizens of the global North (regions with plenty acronyms like the EEA, EFTA etc.) before citizens of the global south. It's not wrong, it's the law and I understand why.

As a foreigner, the deal is to start from the base/middle of the ladder and work your way up, with hard work, being smart n dose of good luck...

If u feel u not cut out for that kind of life, then come back to naija n see how things work out for u....
The quorans statement on Canada is annoying....

Just like that....
I'm sure Canada never promised anyone a professional job...
What they promised is improved quality of life n solid future for your kids....
So many misconception about abroad of recent....

Thanks for being blunt. The first question I ask Nigerians is that did any Western country promise you job?

We are just too entitled here.

Many do unprofessional jobs. You know we Nigerians we dont want to tell ourselves the truth, the person driving taxi in Canada will tell you that he is working in one big bank or company in Canada. Na so I go visit my relative for USA and na Ice Cream he is selling, he tell me oboy no mind facebook things oo, na here I dey square up ooo. This world no easy men.

A little more than a year.
apply for jobs in dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

We are borrowing funds to leave Nigeria for the greedy politicians.
Please, please, please, do everything you can to NEVER RETURN TO NIGERIA.

In the above country/cities, you can do professional jobs with your German visa.

Get 3 months visa and try it out or just keep applying till you get a job of your choice.

But ehh.. Like how much do menial jobs pay there in Germany?
I ask because recently, a guy tried to leave a N500k per month job here in Nigeria to go to Dubai and job-hunt.

SIR PLEASE, EXCEPT YOU ARE A CROOKED PERSON, and are willing to bribe everyday and take unnecessary harassment by govt, police, local touts, criminals, and other kinds of people (even your staff will ROB you if they hear you came from abroad), DO NOT RETURN TO NIGERIA TILL YOU HAVE N1 billion.

But, wait O, have you considered the QUALITY OF LIFE IN NIGERIA?

GOOD BYE, PLEASE Consider my plea.
I am not your family member but I have told you the truth.
Youths are leaving Nigeria.

P. S: I Beg can you transfer that girl number to me, make I marry her sharply. Lol.
Forget marriage is a scam. Why not marry her?

What's the guarantee that that one you will LOVE, will not cheat and back stab you?

If you will gain anything from the marriage,
then marry her, and move to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Australia, New Zealand, or other place with your UK visa?
Or is it must you remain in the UK after marriage?

When I earned 130K (NET), roughly 190K( GROSS), I could save HALF of my pay. You can't force me to conform to the thesis you're trying to propagate. Good job is hard everywhere. if you get very nice job in Naija or Abroad, you can save well, even after all expenses.

It's not all gloom and doom...Naija boys are earning 600K, after tax, 400K. This is true for some who hit the big jobs.

I agree that majority of Nigerians will not be in that category, but the same argument is true for Nigerians in Nigeria. Most will not earn 1M per month working salary work.

So, yes, even a GROSS salary of 120K is a very nice salary in the US. It puts you in the TOP 15-20% of earners in the country, in the US, "one" of the richest countries in the world.

I'm sure you lived abroad, so you can easily verify these numbers..
Are these amounts in naira or USD. Just wondering.

This life ehn. We've got Nigerian students from Canada come to Germany because of lack of skilled opportunities. They say there is discrimination on lack of Canadian degrees and Canadian experience. Also, honest reviews from Quora don't help. It seems many skilled migrants in Canada are also trapped in these same unskilled jobs.

I would have gone to Canada long ago if not for that. I felt the money to be wasted on the processing of the Canadian PR to go get unskilled jobs could be better channelled to my business projects in Nigeria.

If they studied here? I honestly don’t believe it even if they studied Economics. Here there is no order of getting employment, you get employed if you qualify with a Canadian Education, of course even if it’s just one year..

Its possible that there few Nigerians leaving Canada for a place like Germany but this has to be insignificant number compare to Nigerians moving in the opposite direction. With perseverance, consistency and hardwork something worthwhile will come forth in Canada. Canada and Australia tops the rank of best countries to live these days. USA is not also a bad option with a very good degree there.

Forget the option of marrying a girl in order to move to UK because I can sense danger there if you are not a woman wrapper.

Let me give you options that you have considering your age.

First, stay put in Germany and endure to do the menial jobs for atleast 2-3 years to save reasonable amount of money. While doing this, stop giving any extended family members money if it's not dire necessary. Remember, everyone will survive if you are not abroad earning hard currency. God forbid bad thing, if something happen to you, don't you know they will move on with their lives? My point to drive home is that, learn to say 'no' so that you can save up. However, always give stipend to your parents for their blessings. Save, save, save and spend money on things you really need. When you have saved enough money and ensure on projects you wanna do, go home to execute it. Warning here, don't put anyone to supervise your business because that will be the beginning to its end. Always be there to monitor things yourself and see your business empire grow. Lastly on this, dont venture into business you don't know its in and out and ensure you get right to live in Germany indefinitely before leaving for Naija. Always have back up plan.

Second option, since you are still less than 30 yrs old, go for another masters degree in Canada or Australia in a highly demanded field. I would say that if you are studious and eligible enough, go for PhD in Australia because this will earn you their permanent residence without much ado. With a good MSC degree or PhD in a hot area in these two countries, you will get something professional.

Sad but true, its not easy to compete with white folks in their countries. I wish all the best!

I must appreciate the poster's sincerity as opposed to how majority of Nigerians resident in first world nations present the west. I don't think the poster has the wrong mindset. He is at a stage in life where tough decisions need to be made and he is trying to be careful. It is only on nairaland that I consistently hear/read of Nigerians doing well in the west. Majority of Africans are struggling in the west. I also struggled during my college days in east coast USA despite getting a generous allowance from home. Nigerians are also struggling back home in Nigeria. In UK where I lived for 2 years + the story is the same. I don't know much about the poster's academic and social background but I'll suggest he reflects on his strengths and weaknesses in both spheres and make a decision based on that. The west can be attractive when young and at your prime but as you age your priorities and interests get to change and some begin to miss the African life.

Op digest the fact quoted. I have tried moving to nigeria several times from the time of obasanjo to Jonathan. I almost stayed but ten buhari won the election at that time naira to pounds was 250/1 but when buhari won it became 500/1. My target for a start was at least 500k a month which was 2k pounds. I could sort my immediate responsibility out which was support for my kids born abroad with that but then te fluctuations in exchange rate made it impossible.

You are 25 years old, don't feel bigger than your boots remember you are black in a white man's country its natural to be tribal/racial so minorities will always come last. You don't have the mindset of missing Africa yet but your returning to nigeria is based on not getting your dream job.

Like someone advised you, don't marry that UK girl because there will be cultural differences even though she is of Nigerian origin. If you really don't want to work below your qualification because by the time you move to the UK and you ain't getting that dream job in six month she will pressurise you to get any job and women here need the man to pay half the bills, so you can't be out of work.

Do the manual job and keep applying for jobs and try to mingle with the Germans not just chill with black people. The locals will open doors for you and most whites are not racist once they feel comfortable around you.

My advice will be experience the western life some more in Germany and don't forget to socialise. Keep looking for your ideal job but make sure you are able to live. To live half the way you live now in Nigeria you have to be making at least 1m monthly guaranteed and have enough cash saved since the economy is unpredictable.

Bros Please dont return to Nigeria unless you get a good professional job. You can move to UK if you think the marriage can work or you can look to other countries like New Zealand, Australia or Canada. Australia is a nice country, speaks English and have friendly immigration policy. PhD is free in most Australian Universities and they dont have many African students; so consider a PhD in Australia. Bros you dont want to join Buhari in his next level, people are looking for a way out of Nigeria, dont move against traffic. Just go to any other place APART FROM NIGERIA

My sister confirmed those numbers for USD. A computer engineering graduate with 5 years experience can be making that.

Her brother in law makes 180k USD at 27 working for Texas Instruments. That guy is my age grade and owns his house there in Irving, Texas outright and recently bought another one on mortgage to rent in downtown Dallas.

Been following this topic. Here is my expert advice. My child, listen and learn. Learn and understand. Understand and be wise.

* Germany is a fine country with countless of opportunities. You'll fall into the 5% of Africans who have dignified & professional jobs if you secure any. Not a race or discrimination issue, it's just how the system is et up. They tend to their own first, then to those who looks like them before considering giving the crumbs to Africans. Don't count yourself out of the 5% yet. Try harder.

* The U.K is more or less operating same political ideology as that of the Trump administration, especially in terms of immigration. Things are getting tighter for some Africans over there. Although 80% of Africans do menial jobs in the U.K, the rest 20% often do well more their white counterparts. Lots of opportunities in that country if you don't get easy swayed by statistics. Always something for everyone if you have the right people as friends or family. I believe the girl in question must be very robust and out of shape. Those girls gives paper LW to those ready for marriage. Mind you, you must father a child with her b4 getting your papers. Child arrives, mission accomplished. She kicks you out even before you get your Indefinite Leave to Remain. You're back to square one.

*. Canada. Students going to Germany from Canada and complaining about lack of professional jobs are lazy and lack ambition. Canada has one of the hottest jobs in the market depending on what you studied. Even regardless, there's still something for you in other fields. Sometimes, you retrain to get a befitting & dignified job, say 3 months course. There are professional 'self-employed' jobs with companies like Bell, Rogers, Banks and a whole lot more. You don't even need a Masters or a degree. A college diploma is all you need. I have connections and could easy employ 10 to 20 people into these organizations within weeks. Even in the U.K., Netherland, Germany, Iceland and the U.S.

Want to come to the UK, US, Canada, Iceland etc and worried about jobs, holla at me.

Peace!! Enjoy your evening.

Sir, is it only abroad you have a connection cuz someone is hardly keeping body and soul together here in Lagos. Please if you get any contact at home, connect me

I am not one who usually gives advice, however, I would add my two cents to the discussion. First and foremost, you have to decide what career path you would like to take now that you have graduated with a Masters degree...either get into a career in your area of study or start your own business. But either part you choose requires hard work and dedication and you must be willing to put in the effort that is necessary to be successful.

After introspection, assuming you've been hit by an "entrepreneurial bug" and you have the capital and want to start something for yourself, then go for it. You just have to make sure that you do your due diligence before you jump into any type of business venture either in Germany or in Nigeria or any other place for that matter. But if you decide to get into the corporate world in Germany using your educational qualification, then I advise that you learn the language and be very fluent in it assuming you don't already speak the language.

Nothing endears a visitor to his host more than the visitor's ability to communicate with the host in his language. I am saying this out of my personal experience when I went to China with a bunch of my white colleagues from work. Our Chinese hosts related more with me more than my coworkers. I learned Mandarin and was able to communicate with them. That simple gesture made their life much easier for the fact that they did not have to struggle to express themselves to us since a lot of them did not speak English that well. They saw me as a trusted ally and would tell me things that they could not and did not tell my other colleagues.

Moreover, you can be very successful where ever you are if you have the wherewithal and the opportunity to showcase it. So, don't assume that because other Nigerians you know are not able to pursue their career goal in their field of study in Germany or elsewhere in Europe that their fate would be your lot as well. Always remember, that "life is like a box of chocolate and you never know what you'll get" [Forest Gump]. You have to believe in yourself and your skill set and go for it...no venture no success! Good luck and God bless!!

Please what advice do you have for me as a lawyer. I have been unemployed 2 years after call to bar and offers I got from law firms couldn't take care of tfare and monthly living expenses. How can one survive this?

Go to the UK and get that citizenship first. Nigeria is only worth risking if you have plan b. You also have a better chance of securing a job in the UK.

I didn't say no job. I said lack of getting professional jobs.

Some people, Yes maybe, especially if you studied IT. A very large majority is trapped in menial jobs, not even full-time ones, the ones you get with unskilled employment agencies. Even with PhDs and all that. I wouldn't call that a great life. But to some people, it is. You have to understand perspectives.

I have a female Nigerian here who is employed with an agency and goes to clean people's home. She is quite happy and considers it a great opportunity considering that sometimes she joins the family on dinner outings and get gifts. It's great for her but not for me. I wouldn even accept something like that as I think It's no less than being a maid

Will you be able to survive in Germany, Yes. If you're someone with a big dream, I'll say difficult.

In Germany: Germans> EU nationals>US>Eastern Europe >Asians>Indians/Paki etc >Africans. That's the order of getting professional jobs.
Send your application to Siemens they would have a lot of contract to do in Nigeria ,they would be needing STEM guys like you.I hope you speak German. ..what is ja

My bro I am in the same situation as you. Although I reside in the Uk. I have managed to save quite a considerable amount of money back home so I believe I would survive well if I were to return back to Nigeria.

Don’t marry a woman for visa. You will regret it. If you have a child with her you will not really love it.

Save nothing less than 10million even if it is from menial job if you want to return.

I will definitely return sometime soon, I have had enough. There is nothing here. It has just been overhyped that life is very good here. I have not been really happy and I struggle to continue to stay here daily even with the fact I earn a lot of money.

In UK, bills will finish you, you can not really achieve any thing much, it is from pay check to pay check. You will never be rich, if you too struggle self highest na middle class you go be. The kind of job you are looking for if you are LUCKY you will get it. But bills and rent, plus if you buy a car will finish you as you maintain yourself and the woman, That is if you marry that lady.

Naija life sweet die no matter what people say. Nigerians travel abroad a lot because it gives us a sense of fulfilment and achievement that we have travelled. It is from Nigeria parents pay school fees of millions to schools overseas. You can afford £20,000 sch fees from Nigeria but you will not be able to see that kind of cash here. The economy here is a spending economy.

My bro hustle your money and return home.

Anyone that is abroad and is really enjoying themselves, making money no debts here they should raise their hand let me see. Make we stop to dey deceive ourselves.

Your fear is, “what people will say, that he once lived abroad.”
Let your family go their own abroad and make their own money so that they can lick the same sugar we are licking here. You want to die because of family. Let me be going jor, I cannot come and kill myself.

NA God go help me bless you!

I pm’d you Sir.

earning that amount you mentioned in your comment takes years of experience except you work in it
That's not even true, a lot of Nigerians are making good money here legitimately, if you Know what you are doing!
