The United States embassy in Nigeria has suspended drop box service or interview waiver for those renewing visas in the country. In a statement seen by TheCable on Tuesday, the world power said the interview waiver suspension will take effect from Tuesday, May 14, 2019. “The Embassy and Consulate of the United States in Nigeria has suspended the interview waiver ‘Drop Box’ application process effective May 14, 2019,” the statement read. This means those attempting to renew their visas must now attend visa interviews like first timers. The Cable |

Effective at the close of business today, Tuesday, May 14, 2019, the U.S. Mission to Nigeria is indefinitely suspending interview waivers for renewals, otherwise known as the “Dropbox” process. Visa applications will no longer be accepted by DHL in Nigeria. Those who have already submitted their passports via “Dropbox” to DHL for processing either at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, or the Consulate General in Lagos, will not be impacted by this change. All applicants in Nigeria seeking a nonimmigrant visa to the United States must apply online, and will be required to appear in-person at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or U.S. Consulate General in Lagos to submit their application for review. Applicants must appear at the location they specified when applying for the visa renewal. Processing of diplomatic and official (A, G, and NATO class) visa applications will continue unchanged. Mission Nigeria’s processing procedures are regularly reviewed in order to assess our ability to quickly, efficiently, and securely process visa applications. The U.S. Mission is taking this step to provide more efficient customer service and promote legitimate travel, and will continue to facilitate applications of established travelers to the best of its ability.......may na DHL problem |

fkj950ax: Beautyaddy: Here you go. https://ng.usembassy.gov/indefinite-suspension-of-dropbox-process-for-renewals/ This should be a welcome development though.. isn't it better to apply directly for interview than to apply for Dropbox and be kept on waiting list for several weeks then be issued a 221g?.. and now wait for several months to get an interview date? I think it's good, at least till Dropbox becomes fast as it used to be. 1 Share

[go tell the average Nigerian on the stree this one..I feel You tho..naija go better no worry :Dquote author=Chukwuka16 post=78373730]Ok Sir. You know what's funny though - most of the white/caribbean folks I know are relocating to Africa/Asia. Every now and then, I see them registering one local company in Mozambique, Sierra-Leone, Ghana and Nigeria! Was in the country late March/April and discovered South Africans coming into the country to carry out market survey on the feasibility of their business (in the energy sector - inverters and all that)! Africa is the next cash cow, because all attention is shifting to her to make sure she doesn't derail global climate change agenda. We are talking serious money wrt climate change, adaptation, electrification etc. This is worth £billions in the long term. What are we doing about it? Nothing. UK is strategically developing policies to ensure that her foreign aids through DFID, DEFRA and BEIS contribute to net zero emissions by 2050. This is an open door to data scientists and engineers and agriculturists to start building capacity for windfall because local capacity must be built. These information are online and free to access but alas, my people perish for lack of knowledge. Shey Nigeria is too hard, so we all should move away? What happens when they come into our country and milk it dry and then get it working? We would start running back abi? Nigerians have never been known to have an orderly system. Shey Canaan Land is run by angels? (We can talk about the issue of inequality and morality of the investments over beer), but isn't it functioning? I've been there and was humbled that such a place does exist. What of the Jehovah's Witness HQ in Edo State (Igieduma), is it not here in Nigeria? No power outage for years, clean, constant electricity, order and all. I know Nigeria sucks. I know. It hurts to be saying this, but life in Nigeria can really get hard. I was there. But let's keep emotions aside, what value do you think you will add to the country you want to migrate to? What skills do you have that will wow them and incentivise these guys to sponsor you? If you are not coming in as a professional, the alternative is good old fashioned hard work (not mental work). Sincerely, if the truth be told, the life of an average Nigerian in the abroad is an average one. Life shouldn't be average especially when matched with our potentials. And the daily dose of discrimination, forget it! [/quote] |

My interview last month went thus: Location: Abuja Me: Good morning VO: Good morning. Passport please Me: hands over our passport (was with my 18months old baby) VO: Are you traveling to Maryland alone? Me: I’m traveling with my husband and baby for a family vacation VO: where is your husband’s visa Me: Hands over my husband’s passport(he had recently renewed his visa via Dropbox) VO: where is your husband at the moment? Me: At work VO: How long do you intend to stay Me: 2weeks VO: (smiles) I grew up in Maryland... I love Maryland. Aside ... and ..., there is nothing else to do there. So why are you traveling to Maryland Me: For a short family vacation. I have a friend in Maryland who promised to make our stay fun. VO: oooh... now I get! VO: Have you traveled outside Nigeria before? Me: yes... Netherlands and Spain all in 2018 VO: why were you in Netherlands and Spain Me: On business trips VO: (he calls the company I work for) sent you on a business trip? Me: yes VO: how long were you on this trip Me: 8weeks VO: How long have you worked for xx Me: 1yr + VO: and within a year, xx sent you on a trip? Me: Yes. VO: I want to ask you a direct question now? Me: Go ahead VO: are you going to give birth in Maryland Me: No. just going for a family vacation VO: Your husband traveled to the US in xx Me: yes VO: why Me: told him Vo: so after your vacation, what next Me: I will come back to Nigeria. I have a job her VO: looks at his screen and after a while, say I regret to.... hands me the pink letters which states no strong ties back home. We wanted to travel in July for the summer break. But that won’t be happening again. We intend having our next baby in US. and from what I can see now... interview date is from October. I’m not pregnant yet but should be before October based on agreement between stakeholders. Is it too early to reapply and book the October date for appointment? Cos I want to apply for a medical visa this time as the intention will be to give birth.. please. Any good thoughts on how to go about this will be appreciated, thanks guys |

This is the reason for the suspension of interview waivers for visa renewals in Nigeria. According to data provided by U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, Nigeria alone accounted for 132,137 (or over 25 percent) of non-immigrant visas issued to Africans in 2018. Nigeria also came third, behind Brazil and Venezuela, for countries with a record of visa overstays in 2018. http://www.financialnigeria.com/u-s-suspends-interview-waivers-for-visa-renewals-in-nigeria-news-1835.html And it is a follow-up to this article in the Wall Street Journal: President Trump and his top aides are weighing rules designed to clamp down on countries whose nationals overstay short-term visitor visas as part of a broader push for new ways to curb immigration. The effort would target nationals of countries with high overstay rates of such visas, which include the African nations of Nigeria, Chad, Eritrea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to Department of Homeland Security data. https://www.wsj.com/articles/white-house-weighs-broader-immigration-curbs-11555283781 |
