FIFA U-20 World Cup record Nigeria will be taking part in this competition for the 12th time at Poland 2019. The Flying Eagles have reached the last four on three occasions, finishing runners-up in 1989 and 2005, and third in 1985. At New Zealand 2015, when they last graced this tournament, they managed to progress from their group but then crashed out to Germany (1-0) in the last 16. The road to Poland The qualifiers for Poland 2019 were not exactly plain sailing for Nigeria, who were made to work hard for their ticket. After kicking things off with a 2-0 win over Burundi, the Flying Eagles were then held to a scoreless draw against South Africa. In the end it took a 73rd minute strike against hosts Niger to secure the narrow 1-0 win that booked their place in Poland. However, there was to be no podium finish on this occasion after successive penalty shootout defeats to Mali (1-1, 3-4 PSO) and South Africa (0-0, 3-5 PSO) in the semi-final and third-place game respectively. The coach After spells in South Africa (Cape Town FC), England (Bury) and more recently with well-known Nigerian clubs Warri Wolves FC and Eniyamba, Paul Osahon Aigbogun was appointed head of Nigeria’s U-20 team at the beginning of 2018. Despite nearly 20 years of coaching experience, this is his first role with a national team. The stat 7 – Of the 21 players who made up the Nigeria’s title winning squad at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015, seven are still eligible to play at U-20 level and potential candidates for Poland 2019. These are: goalkeeper Akpan Udoh; defender Ejike Ikwu; midfielders Kingsley Michael, Samuel Chukwueze and Edidiong Essien; and forwards Sunday Alimi and Funsho Bamgboye. FIFA U-20 World Cup record Qatar will be making their fourth FIFA U-20 World Cup appearance at Poland 2019 after making their debut in 1981 when they finished second. They hosted the competition back in 1996 but they bowed out at the first round and they had a similar outcome twenty years later when they finished at the bottom of group C in New Zealand 2015. The road to Poland Despite losing their opening match in the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship against UAE, Qatar still managed to finish top of group A along with hosts Indonesia thanks to head-to-head results. A 7-3 win after extra time in the quarter-finals of the competition against Thailand meant the Qataris reached Poland 2019 before losing in the semi-finals against Korea Republic The coach Following several coaching stints in his country including giants Benfica, Portuguese coach Bruno Miguel Nogueira Pinheiro moved to Qatar where he joined Aspire Academy in 2015. He was then appointed as the coach of the Qatar U-19 team in February 2017 before the start of the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship qualifiers. The stat 7 - The number of goals scored by Abdulrasheed Umaru in the 2018 AFC U-19 Championship, including a brace in the quarter-finals clash against Thailand. Qatar hit seven past Thailand in that game, which was the same amount of goals scored in their run to finish second in the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship. |
