yes we sure know buh if u're to trace it, it will all set down to under-development. like in nigeria one of the key factor of under-development in some areas is mostly corruption.

You cannot develop without clean water.

It is a sign that something is very wrong when you don't have enough.

Seriously? Lack of clean water is responsible for the death of so many. No human can function well without clean water. The world already knows about Nigeria’s poor governance. Why should she tell them that? As per unemployment, the sooner people realize that it is not anyone’s responsibility to provide them with jobs, the sooner they’ll make themselves more marketable, or acquire skills to be self employed. Which country provides jobs for its citizens? So what else....

When your population is dying prematurely of water borne illnesses you won't be able to fix those other issues because a lot of conflict is caused by the fight for essentials such as water. Tribalism is at its worst when basic resources appear to be scarce.

Cuppy's reality is different from yours you know

Why do we go to another man's country to talk about our problems ??

Isn't that very stupid on our part

Which white man talks about their problems to complete strangers?

It's something we need to imbibe.

Talk about your problem with your family and friends not to total strangers ..

I guess that's where the gap in communicate between Nigerian couples stems from....

We need a minister on communication.

Good afternoon....and you can do better than calling me stupid when I did not insult you.

Ten years ago, I would have agreed with about 90 percent of the things you write about, but with time, my views have massively changed, so I know there is hope for you.

Nigeria's problem is mass poverty. Simple and short.

Nigerians are poor not because of lack of electricity or infrastructure as we are made to believe, but because we lack quality public primary and secondary education and a healthcare system. In the developed world, most economies are 80 -90 percent composed of small to medium scale businesses.

Most entrepreneurs come from lower to middle income families. In the western nations, a majority of new businesses are stated first generation and second generation immigrants as most first generation migrants find it difficult to get quality jobs. Basically, most businesses are started by people who are either natural risk takers or have no other choice to earn a living than to start a business.

Without the central government funding education, most poorer people never develop the skills necessary to succeed in business, they also do not interact with people from richer backgrounds so their circle of influence remains within people in their income bracket.

For example, a son of a generator repairman would learn everything about engines from his father but without quality education, may not be able to gain admission into university to study engineering. That son with education may have setup a generator assembly plant that would employ tens to hundreds of Nigerians and provide much needed taxes to the federal government. There are thousands of artisan children in these very situation as I type. The children of tailors, of barbers, of carpenters and of plumbers who with quality education would be able to set up viable businesses that would employ lots of Nigerians.

We import furniture from China and Turkey, yet we export quality wood to China. This is an example that should be clear to you.

You speak about electricity a lot. I am a NEPA child. without NEPA, I wouldn't have been able to get a quality education. The problem with electricity is mass poverty. A majority of Nigerians cannot afford to pay the true cost of 24/7 electricity so investment in the sector is low. Demand requires ability to pay which Nigerians do not have, so in economic terms Nigerians have a low demand for electricity.

Why is electricity expensive? Fuel to produce electricity is gas which is sold in USD, so once the Naira weakens, energy cost naturally go up.

Why does the Naira weaken? Lack of productivity of Nigerians.

Why do we lack productivity? As earlier stated, we lack basic quality education which will provide the skills most needed for the people who need it most and also would create an environment for people from all backgrounds to meet and interact.

Finally, a government funded education system would act as a stimulus to all Nigerians instantly boosting consumption thus increasing the rate of GDP growth. Also building schools and classrooms to meet global accepted standards would also create lots of jobs.

Nigeria as currently constituted with 24 hour "expensive" electricity would witness little to no economic growth as the people who need the electricity the most, lack both the knowledge and connections to succeed in business.

As important as education is, it can not exist in a 0vacuum. Other things need to be in place for education itself to benefit from the economy.

If education was all important, the USSR would have been the richest country in the world. It's economy would have been bigger than the Uinted States.

It's economy was however the opposite, it was much more smaller than America. It's economic system was the problem

Another example is Cuba. Cubans are probably the most educated people in the Americas. At a time, they were producing as many doctors as Britain, with a population five times larger. Yet the island is synonymous with poverty because of the socialist system it runs.

Can the same happen in capitalist countries? Yes

Look at Ireland, before the mid 1990's, there was massive brain drain from that country. About 1 in 5 graduates emigrated. The country's economy was not producing enough jobs. Personal income taxes of over 60% deterred companies from investing despite the 12.5% company tax rate. It was when the tax rate was reduced below 50% that an investment boom commenced.

It is very important that you get your economy right or a serious brain drain will start. An exodus of the brightest is going on in earnest now due to the poor state of the economy.

Education was made for the economy and not the other way round. A sound and growing economy is needed to create enough jobs annually to make good use of that education rather than leave it redundant.

That is just it. If only we gain independence around 1995, we won't even need to travel to USA or Canada to hustle. We would have good roads, medical facilities, electricity and education. But dem awolowo, azikwe and co fought for independence cos of their own selfish reason. We really need recolonisation

Naaa waaa ooo
You go Germany....
They talk nonsense

But lack of clean water is a very critical problem:

many people fall sick annually (and some die, especially children) due to unsanitary water used to clean foods, used to cook, used to wash utensils, etc. Water used for treating people in hospitals and for delivery of children is often a source of complications and death.

students waste valuable time having to fetch water in this 21st century... when their counterparts can just open tap, drink, and get back to being productive. How will we ever catch up?

families spend a significant portion of their income on buying water (often of questionable quality)

there's chemical leaching from pure water sachets that have long-term effects on our health for decades to come. The leaching made worse by sunlight hitting the sachets while there being displayed for sale. Not to mention that there's often no filtering, and poor hygienic standards allow protozoa and algae to flourish due to lack of chlorination.

it costs us up to 10% in GDP and economic improvement, according to some sources

so many large Nigerian businesses can be sustained if given contracts to design and make pipes, pumps, and to lay down pipes, but our government still wants to own all water works and run them poorly, if at all.

I wholeheartedly agree with your view. I have also heard about Ireland's economy with high taxation stifling growth. Everything needs to be done in moderation comparatively to other nations.

Do you by any chance know why China, a socialist communist nation, is growing in wealth, whereas Cuba and the USSR failed to grow? My belief is meritocracy as against favoritism, nepotism and rent seeking (lets call it FNR).

FNR is rampant in most socialist nations as the rulers decide who gets a tax break, who gets employed, and who gets the contract. In offices, promotions are as a result of relationships as opposed to competency in moving the company forward. Issues like ethnicity, race, sex, age and income background seriously impacts ones ability to make it in life.
Frankly, Nigeria is one of the most Socialist nations on earth, that is why we are the poverty capital.

Both China and the United States invest massively in public education. This does not make the socialist. So far a nations "TRIES" to provide a level playing field for all its citizens irrespective of differences, such as nation will naturally prosper.

If we have to learn "A B C" to learn to read an write, a nation needs to educate it masses to grow it's economy. This is the first step.
