THE POOL

Hundreds staring at a pool for years, watching for the water to bubble. Bethesda was a healing waters place. When the water stirred the first in was healed – at least so they believed. They just had to keep their eyes open. No use reading a book, or bringing a chess set. What a life! Just a pool! One patient patiently waited, being ill for 38 years. He couldn't walk, had nobody to help him, so somebody always got in the pool before him.

One day events took a dramatic turn. A total stranger walked up. He asked a question that seemed silly – "would you like to get well?" He started to explain that that he didn't get very far. The stranger cut him short. He said, "Alright, pick up your bed and go!" Now we've all heard of miracle recoveries. It's not uncommon, especially after prayer. This man believed in a cure with the pool, but just get up and walk away? He stared at this man. But there was something about him. It made a warm glow spread through his body. He began to try, first his feet, and somehow straightening his limbs, and found he could stand. Then he took a step, and another. That was it. He rolled up his little mattress and was off. Later he met this tremendous man again, but that's another story.

Meanwhile, I need not tell you, He never came back to the pool again. His world was bigger than a pool. That story is true, and comes from the Bible. (John 5: 1-15) We don't know the sick man's name but the stranger was Jesus Christ. Christ had made the universe full of wonder, and pitied this man with only a pool. Plenty of folk live like that. What's their pool? Is their world so small? Christ offers us all a great deal. He knows how to broaden our horizons, deepen our experience, and give us a reason for living, a purpose and meaning. The Pool.

FAITH CANCELS FEAR

"By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king's command" (Heb. 11:23).

Just think of what that involved. The Egyptian state and Pharaoh, its head, had made it illegal to keep a Hebrew baby-boy. By law, such children were to be killed at birth. Soldiers moved around to carry out this order. What terror and grief there must have been! Then Moses was born. His parents looked upon this lovely son, and decided to defy the law and hide the baby. "By faith . . . they were not afraid.”

Officers of the law were around, and their footsteps were heard stopping at their very door, seeking the child's life! Who would not shake in their shoes if armed men were waiting, ordered to kill their baby? Yet, "they were not afraid.”

This is a glorious truth: FAITH CANCELS FEAR. Their faith may have looked naive and foolish. But the situation was exactly what God likes. He delights to do the impossible. God bless you, REINHARD BONNKE.

The devil hates what God plans. That is why so many influences are eroding natural family life today. One of the menacing last-day signs is that children will be “disobedient to their parents.” It has become almost a national custom for teenagers to rebel, to turn their backs on their home and the parental guidance they need and to live independently and do as they like, to be “without love” (2 Timothy 3:2-3).

“Love” is family life as God set it up at Creation. Satan immediately attacked it as fatal to his evil plans and engineered the murder of Abel by his brother. Nevertheless, everything in Scripture shouts the glorious truth that God has his eye on every family on earth and seeks to bless them.

Most of the Old Testament is about one family, the family of Abraham. God began in Abraham’s home 4,000 years ago, promising “I will bless you, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:2-3). To many people God is the Great Judge. But why not the Great Blesser? The first thing he ever said about himself, to Abraham, was that he would bless all families on earth. He certainly does that.

He knocks on every door, smiles and blesses every household where he is admitted. Saying “Bless you!” is not just a superstitious response when someone sneezes but an echo of that living promise of God, “I will bless you.” Blessed? REINHARD BONNKE

The only Spirit that Jesus promised us is the miracle Spirit, the Holy Spirit. There is no non-miracle Holy Spirit. To claim to possess the Holy Spirit, and deny the very work which has always distinguished Him can only grieve Him. He it is who began with the supreme physical wonder of creating the world. He does not change His nature. What He was, He is, and always will be – God operating on the earthly scene. ‘I am who I am’ (Exodus 3:14). The Holy Spirit, who made the world super-naturally, should have no difficulty in continuing supernaturally. God bless you. Greetings from Mexico. REINHARD BONNKE

The Cross stands fast. It is an anchor of the soul. That figure of speech is found in the book of Hebrews 6:19-20. "This {hope} we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence {behind} the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, {even} Jesus..." This is a sea-going picture from those ancient days.

A ship comes into harbour, but cannot draw too near to the shore in the darkness. So a sailor gets into a boat with an anchor and a line attached which is also fixed to the ship. He is called the "fore runner." As he rows, the line between anchor and ship is played out and links them. Eventually the forerunner boat arrives and the seaman carries the anchor ashore and secures it on land. In the morning, no sails are needed. The crew of the ship begins to wind in the anchor cable yet it isn't the anchor which moves but the ship. Slowly the vessel winches towards the shore. This is the background to the word "forerunner."

Our "forerunner" is Jesus who has entered through the veil and our anchor is made fast. Our salvation is secure like the sailor ashore whom the crew cannot see. Christ is no longer visible to us, He is "ashore" in glory, and WE ARE ATTACHED BY FAITH TO GLORY BY HIM. He has entered glory for us. Day by day the cable is shortening, and pulling us nearer and nearer to Christ our forerunner. Eventually we shall reach heaven's shore and what shall we see? Our "forerunner" waiting to greet us, that "where He is there we may also be." (John 14,3) Faith links us already, and will bring us to Him at last. THAT FAITH IS ASSURANCE. God bless you. The fire of God is special—unique. Only the fire of God was allowed on the altar of Moses, not fire produced by any human means. Nadab and Abihu made fire themselves and lit their incense with it. It was labeled "profane fire." Divine fire gushed from the tabernacle, swallowing up the false fire and bringing about the deaths of the rebel priests (Lev. 10:1-2). Today, we have profane fire being offered. Theologies of unbelief, the thoughts of men and their philosophies, criticisms and theories are strange gospels, which are not Gospel at all. They bear no trace of the glory-heat from heaven. Nothing in them produces any combustion except controversy. Yet, the “Gospel is the power of God”. The fire of the Holy Spirit puts life into us. God sets driftwood on fire. Dry old sticks can burn for God, just like Moses' bush did! I don't pray, "Let me burn out for Thee, dear Lord." I don't want to be an ash heap. The amazing feature of the Burning Bush was that it didn't burn out. Too many of the Lord's ser¬vants are burning out. The cause of that is some other kind of fire. I say in¬stead, "Let me burn on for Thee, dear Lord." The altar flame should never go out. God bless you. REINHARD BONNKE

THE GOSPEL IS JESUS

This first piece of evangelism was cross-cultural. This was an extremely important development and something quite novel and astonishing in the world. The greatest force for change ever known did not change cultures. It only drove the devil out of them. Between Peter’s simple Jewish culture and the sophisticated affluence of a Roman official, the gulf in thinking was as wide as the Grand Canyon. But God was dealing with the messenger, Peter. He had a quite strict Jewish outlook and so did leaders who were with him. Normally, Jews never went into a Gentile home. The vision, however, helped Peter change his mindset, and break down taboos and traditions. He understood God’s broader purpose and so when the men arrived from Caesarea, he was prepared to go with them. The message was all about Jesus. The business of comparative religions is the business of contrast. There is nothing to join. Take, for example, the founders of Islam and Buddhism. They professed to be no more than channels. Mohammed talked of his visions. Buddha talked of his enlightenment. Jesus did neither. He never claimed to be a prophet. He said He was what they all prophesied about. Christian truth is not a series of statements, or a code of ethics, or a program of religious observances. Jesus is the truth. Christianity is Christ. There is no need to attack Islam, or any other religion. There is no need to attack anybody’s way of life either in the west or east or north or south. All we need to do is simply to let them see for themselves what Jesus is. As the Bible puts it, we need to encourage them to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Ps 34:8, NKJ). Jesus always wins the day. People can say nothing against Him. Nobody else saves and heals, expels devils and fills people with joy.
