okoroemeka: I noticed similar trait in my greengo pilot, on getting to the farm this morning....I noticed male flowers developing (even though its been churning out loads of female flowers earlier) kinda surprised female flowers are developing before male flowers |

okoroemeka: Permit me to make comments here sir if you do not mind. The main concept is to make nutrients and organic matters available for the plants at the right ph. If the ph is not right, the nutrients added will not be absorbed by the plants. This is what happened to you when you use only fertilizer as basal. Basal application is a skill that you will always dance if you know how to do it well. Sir, if you add fertilizer to your manure, your boys will be panting to keep up with the crops cos they will get the spirit of Usain Bolt. Manure is organic matters. Add NPK and Calcium and little pottassium basal. What you do is to mix very well with your manure. Give like 5grams per plant. Even I go up to 10grams cos I have perfected it. Mix very well. Take your time to do it. Your manure will act as alkaline to adjust the ph. So, fertilizer will not be a problem. Also, calcium like lime is what you use, and not calcium nitrate as basal. USe manure very well, You do not even need to measure the PH. It is from experience. Wrong ph affects germinate too. I have used without manure many times with excellent result. The problem you had was that the fertilizer was applied in a way it altered the PH. I guess you did not add lime or alkaline based calcium. And calcium must go with Magnesium all time. Add Epsom salt or spray it. Just practise well and get the right PH after applying basal. This is the secret behind it. NPK is acidic, so balance it with alkaline calcium. Then add Magnesium. You should formulate a ratio for yourself. 3 Likes |

Ogas here talking about greengo and Monalisa. You need to learn the concepts. I always stress this point. Cu999 is monoecious. Male flowers will come out first. BUt Cu999 is a special hybrid and great. And the funny thing is that if you give it nutrients well, it is faster to get to market than many gynecious. LOL. And there are special enzymes that can alter the flowering pattern to push out more female flowers that will compete with gynecious. LOL. Do not ever joke with good monoecious. I scout for them more for open market cos the market favors big fruits. But with heat stress, male flowers will bombard the plants. Greengo and Darina are gynecious. If the temperature is ok, they produce only female flowers. FOr Darina, there is 10% MarketMore (which is OP and monoecious) added to the seed so pollination can occur. FOr Greengo, you should sow 10% monoecious in trays like 1 week ahead of sowing greengo becaose the manufacturer does not add any monoecious to it (maybe they do now, not sure). You need to get this right. Also, you can use special enzymes to pull out male flowers if you do not want to use monocious seeds. But I advise against it for our region because heat will pull out more male flowers too later in their growth stage. SO, better to use monoecious with it, or just plant it alone. Monalisa is pre dominant female flower. Female flowers come out first. Then after, male will be so much if heat is not controlled. BUt you will always find female flowers on them. Pre dominant female was a solution to gynecious option of not growing monoecious with it. The challenge of many fruits on gynecious is the same on this too. Murano is also in this category. Their fruits are usually bigger than gynecious. note that flower abortion is rampang with predominant female flowers. It is why Monalisa and Murano after every harvest will have almost all flowers abort. Then afyer days, new sets of flowers will come up. You may have 10 days intervals with them to go to market. Monalisa germination rate is as high as 90% just like many other seeds. Something must be wrong with the batch of that particular seeds or with the part of the land they were sown on. You should confirm using trays for sowing. And I am telling you politely, you will not get the true result comparing the varieties as long as cross pollination occurs. It is from personal experience. Until I cultivated in separated land portion, my trials were flawed. The main challenge of Monalisa among all these cultivars is that it has no resistance to downy mildew. It will weaken Greengo and Cu999 except you use fungides well. But others kinda strengthen it from my experience. But when you do it separately, you will see the result clearly. And I have noticed that having two varieties on farm from different flowering kinds may produce better yield. I hope you are not all annoyed that I dropped these comments. God bless the work of your hands. Amen. |

Pls how can I be annoyed when we are on a mission to maximize cucumber yield production, every suggestion, tips, information, analysis and experienced insight is welcomed, last dry season we didn't get our target of ₦500k from one plot but we came close, very close to the target,,but now we are preparing for the challenge in time,so by the time cucumbers hit ₦6-7,000k a bag,dec-feb, we will be ready to tap the Bonanza and also what we will need to break that barrier is 80-85 bags,it's also refreshing to see things from other farmers point of view,we learn every day,if you are tried of learning then you will be stagnant |

The effect of the 1 kg per hole pig manure is showing in incredible growth,I really think manure must first be used as basal application before planting veggies especially curcubits, the benefits are much, even if it's just that once, npk can take over later,I can no longer bet anything on the outcome of this test, it will be very close,cu 999 won on germination rate, monalisa won on early fruiting, now cu 999 has more vigourous growth, more lateral shots and incredible vine length, but no fruits yet,I am definitely not betting my fresh pot of egusi soup on the outcome of this crazy match. 4 Likes 1 Share

johnnyblaze424:hmm, pruning?no my brother we have tried that before and it spread disease around the farm like wildfire,or less u will be sterilizing after cutting one plant and also the crop will try all ways possible to defeat you, because it's programmed to produce lateral shots,I can't forget the first time we pruned cucumbers, the more you prune, the more lateral shots are coming out daily,it's a case of Medusa's head,lf you cut off one two will come,or less you will have workers that will be going around cutting off side shots like in green house. |

agbajesaid:if you staked 2 acres,I am sure it will give more yield than no staking on 10 acres, don't even be surprised to see 1 acre that is well managed surpass that 10 acres that is not staked in yield, cucumbers that are left to crawl on the ground yields 30-40% less and the remaining fruits u will battle ground insects,rodents/animals,5-7% will not be seen to be harvested,we have planted 700 sack bag with cucumbers on half plot+ and it gave 50 bags,we have planted 5-6 plot of un staked cucumbers it gave 40 bags 1 Like 1 Share |

agbajesaid: Sir, I sincerely hope it is not any kind of expensive hybrid you bought. No irrigation, no staking. You have been told the honest truth that even 1/2 acre staked, and properly irrigated will perform better. I can imagine the cost of fertilizer aplication, cost of weeding, cost of seed of hybrid, cost of fertilizer itself, and you stated using cheap pesticides. All the same, God can still make a way for the millions you are expecting. But from my perspective, any slight drought, hmmmmmm! It is well. 1 Like 1 Share |

My Tokyo2 f1 cucumber started off crazily with each plant having between 6 and 10 little cucumbers on it! It was unbelievable. Then suddenly the leaves started turning yellow this affected the development & size of the fruits. But new, lush leaves are still coming out from the top half of the plants. Anyone knows the likely cause & suggested solution? We have been spraying mancozeb + imidacloprid + Lara force gold every week since week 2. Here's a picture taken today of a yellow leaf [img][/img]

1. Mancozeb during rainy season is not good becos it's only a contact fungicide, you need to add a systemic fungicide. 2. Are you actually using imidacloprid + laraforce gold as pesticide? Why ? Laraforce gold contains lamdacyalothrin and Imidacloprid already, so why are you still adding another product with Imidacloprid alone. That's a waste of money. DeLaRue: |

okoroemeka: Tokyo is good like greengo for DM. It's just their flowering pattern that is different. Farmers always testify to it that it stays longer than Murano. Tokyo is good for DM. But personally, I really do not like it. Even in rainy seasin, I used to use Murano in those days despite it is Intermediate Resistance. Bro if you spray well, and defoliate, DM will appear, but market is still very sure. Confirmed! Technisem is not bad when it comes to Cucumber. And the seeds are cheaper. I favor them more. Just take time to observe them sir. I am sure you may agree later. But then, every farmer has its preference. But you are Cu999 guys naooo....lol. |

Cocoboms:Really? Really about Tokyo? It's been long I used it. There is something called integrity in business. Will not pass judgement now. Seminis too made dome batches of 100g cans for Darina, and was awful some years back. They has to discontinue it. Most likely the franchise in making that went sour. Also, there is a brand good farmers will never touch in Nigeria. They make fake products, over 95% are adulterated, reduced active ingredients. Just use double to triple the doze to be effective, and if you then compare the price after using extra dozage, it is more expensive than other brands. Will not want to mention any company here. Those who know, know. Not everything cheap is alright. I hope Tokyo is not like that cos it used to be very good resistor of DM. Anyway, it's over 2 years I have gone near it. Perhaps bro Emeka is very right too. It's good for farmers to discuss like this. 1 Like |

Yesterday was the 28th day of our test farm and more results are coming in,it was just like I predicted that monalisa will come out first with female flowers, because the signs was there from the beginning,cu 999 is still producing male flowers mostly and no female flower in sight, monalisa is an interesting variety it's not a pure gynoecious and on the other hand it is not a pure monoecious either,so I am calling it a half breed or halfling, and planting a variety with unpredictable behavior like monalisa will be seriously challenging during the hot dry season, because rising temperature will trigger abnormal quantity of male flowers, the first pic is the monalisa and the last is cu 999

We are not leaving anything to chance or fate, fresh chicken manure that has been soaked for four days was applied today,it will be our last manure application, npk and foliar fertilizer will take over,we want to make sure that every crop will give it's optimum yield, catalogues by seed co will say one thing,if you plant it u will see another thing, open field planting like this will prove beyond any reasonable doubt the true face of these varieties. 1 Like 1 Share
