U.S Based>> Choosing A Career Path In America<<< by oluwarichie(m): 6:35pm On May 18, 2019
Hi Guys, So i have been search NL for a trend to help me in narrowing my option on the next step to take (career wise) living in the U.S and i discovered we don't have a topic like that here and permanent resident/legal immigrant that would need information(s) regarding this subject.

In my case i'm sought of lost in my head in choosing what do to, the few people i have spoken to, as typical Nigerians say "Go and do Nursing".

Although i have someone whose told me about picking up and I.T career and it sounds interesting. The dilemma is where do i start from?

Anyone with information, guides and contributions...WELCOME

I don't know much about the economy and service sector in Illinois/Chicago..but where i live CA....there is great opportunities in different field. Most Nigerians here work in Medical field as Doctors, Nurses RN or LVN or CNA, Pharmacist, Nurse practitioner, Dental Hygienist, Psychiatric Technician, Medical laboratory technologist etc. You also have School district teachers, social workers, security officers, transit bus operators, food service technicians, police officers, city ticket officers, engineers working for govt firm like caltrans, realtors etc. What you do is you choice....but my 50 cent advice is if you typically want A job thats not so challenging to get, steady reliable income with flexible work hours and ample opportunity to make money via overtime or other jobs, you're likely to work as an RN, LVN, CNA OR PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN...ITS YOUR CHOICE ...

Thanks for this invaluable advice. I think a career in healthcare offers job security and a whole more benefits just as you listed.

Accounting has many career prospects so you’re good.
Leaving in the suburbs is quiet challenging but I’ve got no other option for now.

my first advice would be to leave chicago. Nigerians there are not up to much as far as legal life. I literally don't know one Nigerian in chicago that's up to much. If you are open to relocation I would suggest atlanta, houston, dallas, places with upwardly mobile black people and Nigerians, low cost of living, nice houses in the 200s, and lots of opportunity. IT is definitely having it's moment now and you don't have to spend much on education to get your foot in the door. I like that it's flexible, allowing you to work from home and have other side gigs. If it sounds like something you're interested in I can ask around for how to get started. I'm assuming you're a permanent resident...

You do place Texas above Illinois? I do like to know about the IT stuff though. FYI there are lost of successful black/ Nigerians in chicago the downside is it’s a highly competitive market and you would expect from the third most viable city in the US

If you get a degree in those fields one will always have a job. I would caution for people to stay away from the For Profit colleges though. Their accreditation is different than typical Community Colleges/State Universities/Privates, and they charge a lot. The least expensive degree course is 2 years at Community College (that feeds into the State University system) then 2 years at State U for a bachelors.

That's good. I know a non Nigerian in the financial sector that's doing very well there but I've not seen anyone coming from Nigeria to live in chicago have a soft landing. IT will require a bunch of certifications and I think weekend classes for a month or thereabouts. I'll reach out to a friend to get you specifics. One thing I will tell you is if you plan to remain in professional jobs long term then you need to add a US degree to your plans.

The financial controller of cook county that cover Chicago land area is a Nigerian, I know quite a couple of them but like you said they all added an American degree or certificate, guess that’s where I am lacking for now.

Atlanta is not bad at all but it’s pretty hot up there weather wise same as Texas. I will wait for your findings

200s for a room? or what and whats the best way to search for accommodation apart from Craigslist

So is nursing the only career option?

Many Nigerians think nursing is the only career option, CNA, LPN, RN,MA etc.. To me the best field you can ever go into is IT and i will explain.. First off you can learn IT from sites like codecademy, linux academy, udemy etc for a small fee do your certifications with true dedication you will land your first job.. Nursing you have to do your preliminary and start 2 to 4 years of school.. More so IT pays way more than nursing though depends on which aspect of IT some might be at per with nursing while some other aspect are way way higher than nursing..

IT gives you the option to work remotely doing multiple jobs if you really know what you are doing.. I have seen nurses work their hearts out day and night which to me its really stressful, any mistake your license might be seized, confiscated etc. In IT i can be in the comfort of my home doing my work and chill.. Individual background also determines... Nursing is good but IT is way better..

In Atlanta you can get a brand new sizable house starting at $240k.. depends on the area also..Chicago is a no no for me. I wonder how my brothers survive there, its not as if they are doing one tangible thing..

Huh...Are you sure about that?

I was under the belief that most Americans live in the cities because of the availability of more jobs and higher wages.
