Will you rather wait days to get unlock permission and also wait for XX hours or you will just wait for XX hours?
Nothing like waiting for permission anymore, it's official, you just to attempt unlocking and you'll be given the number of hours to wait for you to unlock, 72 hours for old devices like the Redmi note 4 and 360 hours for new devices from the Redmi 5 plus I think.

An important tip for Newbies and seasoned Xiaomi users:

One of the important things you should do after you get your Xiaomi device is to Unlock the bootloader, especially when it is the Chinese Version flashed with Global rom.
Global version users too should endeavour to unlock if you have it in mind to tweak and mod in future.

An unlocked bootloader will save you a lot hassles if anything goes wrong during tweaking, modding and simple processes like OTA updates.

All you will need to do is to download the latest fastboot rom and flash through MiFlash whilst the phone is booted to fastboot mode. An interesting bit is that, an option "save user data" when chosen in MiFlash, will ensure the user data is untouched and available after the new setup.

The only negative to an unlocked bootloader that I can't personally attest to is that the device "might" be less secure after unlocking, at least that is what Xiaomi states when you request for unlock permission.
As for me, I am yet to experience any negative thing related to bootloader unlocking.

Macbeyland, can I assume my bootloader is already unlocked. I updated via OTA successfuly

Ok, you need enough data then, try downloading the recovery rom and flash manually first.
https://en.miui.com/download-342.html#508

Follow the screenshot too to ensure you download the global rom.

Copy the rom into the internal memory of your device in a folder you should name downloaded_rom, then go to the updater app, tap the 3 dots on the top right of your screen, choose update package, then scroll down to the folder, 'downloaded_rom ', and tap on the rom. Update will begin automatically, don't stop it till it's completed, takes around 15 mins. Ensure you switch on data during the process.

yours is massive. If I hadn't lost my previous songs to an HDD crash, I'm sure I'd have over 11,000 songs now.

Moreover, I don't download songs anyhow. I make sure my songs are well organised with the right tags and album arts.

Not easy at all.

Nope it is not, locked or unlocked bootloader don't contribute in bricking. Some Redmi Note 5 users are just facing some glitches from the recently released ROM

No, it is still locked. I would advise you to commence the process of unlocking it so that once the global rom comes out, you can flash it via mi flash tool.

I have a recorded video of the process.

you are very funny, all your years of reviewing phones, you are still there assuming about something, can't you check for facts? Or is the phone review done by someone else and posted through your account?

I still didn't find Radio Biafra... That means it doesn't get every radio station. It gets some, mostly those that have online streaming, but local channels no!
