Senator Ahmed Lawan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday emerged President of the 9th Senate.

Lawan defeated Senator Ali Ndume with total votes of 79 to 28. Here is a look at five reasons why Lawan defeated Ndume:

· APC’s endorsement

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC met with governors and members of the National Assembly elected on the platform of the party on Monday in Abuja to endorse candidates for positions of the Senate President, Speaker and their deputies.
The forum endorsed Senator Ahmed Lawan as Senate President. It is safe to say that the endorsement of Lawan could have influenced his victory.

Unlike 2015, the endorsement worked because the party didn’t stop at that. It mobilised all forces to make sure the endorsement worked.

· Buhari’s intervention

On Thursday 6th June, President Muhammadu Buhari met with Senators Danjuma Goje and Ahmed Lawan. After the closed-door meeting with the President, Goje withdrew from the race making, the road clearer for Lawan’s victory.

As against 2015, the President took the bull by the horn, ensuring he neutralised almost all the oppositions, cementing his status as a father figure in the party.

· Wide consultation

The same Lawan was endorsed in 2015 by APC but didn’t do much. He, more or less, trusted the party to ensure his victory. But this time around, he didn’t bank on the endorsement alone. He went round the nation, speaking to stakeholders and lobbying senators to support him.

He was able to rally round key forces to make his ambition a reality.

· Disaffections with Ndume

Most People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senators, somehow couldn’t trust Ndume with their votes. The 28 votes he garnered clearly indicate all PDP members didn’t vote for him despite his endorsement by the NWC of the party.

Ndume, to many of them, is never a good alternative to Lawan. He was in the PDP some years ago and they believe he may just be a sell-out.

You are excluding the oshomole factor, he practically relocated to nass tiding everything.

If oyegun was still around he would sit in his house and start ordering senators cluelessly.

Any APC member could have been used to gang up with PDP and pull a stunt but today it was even APC that was scouping PDP to its side cos of planning

All your points are on point especially Buhari's intervention and Ndume's unreliability, if you noticed in the last senate, Lawan was in with APC through thick and thin while Ndume quickly sell out to Saraki to get Majority leader and he quickly sell Saraki out again to APC, it would have been a great mistake on the part of PDP and other rebel APC to vote for him because he could flip to Buhari's side like he did the last time leaving the PDP guys in the cold. Right now I believed the PDP guys got good deal as part of their negotiation. Many clueless People think all this stuff pulled by PDP and Saraki the last time and all the stunt pulled by PDP now are for the masses but in reality it is about negotiating sweet and juicy deals for themselves and I was part of the people that search for houses as a gift for PDP senators and house of rep members in 2014 for them to vote for Saraki and Dogara, they bought houses in katampe ext because non of them wanted money due to efcc trouble time, they also negotiated juicy key commitees for themselves but this time around nobody to finance the houses, we got the house in lifecamp and they just drop the idea later.

Buhari's factor is also very important, the last term he was not interested, he felt he can work with anybody since every arms has their cut out functions but Nigeria is much more complex than whatever the constitution says, now he does not need anybody to tell him what to do, he has seen and expirienced it by himself so he quickly acted b4 anything could happen.

I hope he has also learn from his past mistake and he will free hand small make people enjoy life.

6. The Jagaban Factor.

7. Buhari learning a harsh lesson from the previous foolish statement:

"I belong to everyone.......i belong to no one"

Lawan won because of the hate filled igbos

The senators voted him to spit on the faces of the igbos and let the igbos know they are no relevant in Nigerian politics.

The igbos supported Ndume and he has failed.

Anybody supported by the igbos are bound to fail.

We have now all learnt our lessons. Never allow the igbos to support your political ambition if you must progress.

GEJ learnt his lessons,

Saraki learnt his lessons

Atiku is still been swindled by the igbos and he will go broke soon.
