Some one draw my attention to a problem recently that he think is incorrect, he have search the Internet with many website have the question but no diagram or solution to it,
But behold the problem is correct, and easy, but I found out another problem of our students, which was also pronounced in the just concluded WASSCE mathematics question, I will reveal the problem I found out about our students later,
Let someone attempt this first

Now that the diagram has been drawn
MY RECOMMENDATION,
MATHS TEACHERS SHOULD HELP THEIR STUDENTS UNDERSTAND 3D CONCEPT.
a lot of students did not answer a question in the just concluded WASSCE mathematics examination and they tag it wrong question,
Asking questions like why why will angle at a point be more than 360°
Were as that is a plane not a point.
Thus they Skip the cheap geometry question.

Most bright students, even a huge percent of maths teachers, would still struggle to come up with a diagram that captures this question. Its not the solution that's difficult; its the diagram. Most times, students are taught only two dimensional bearing problems, but three dimensional problems like the one in the post are completely ignored.

The problem is not the diagram. The question is even grammatically wrong. The first sentence is so wrong. There is a difference between "at" and "as". The opening line of the question says;
C and D are observational posts on the same horizontal ground at the foot A of a vertical tower AB
C and D cannot be on the same horizontal ground of the vertical tower and be at A as the questions says. Perhaps, they meant to say that;
C and D are observational posts on the same horizontal ground AS the foot A of a vertical tower AB.
The moment I saw this, I did not even bother to take the question serious.

Change "at" to "as", and you still wont get the diagram in two dimensions. Its three dimensional. Its a simple but slightly confusing diagram. Ive got it here. Still trying to upload it

SOLUTION

Question says;
C and D are observational posts on the same horizontal ground at the foot A of a vertical tower AB. The tower is 18m due North of D and 24m due East of C

Question should be
C and D are observational posts on the same horizontal ground AS the foot A of a vertical tower AB. The tower is 18m due North of D and 24m due East of C
After correcting the grammar, this is how it should be solved.

STEP 1

Mark a dotted point as the point D and trace it up to another dotted point. The second dotted point represents the tower. This should be a straight line. why? Because the question says the tower is 18m due North of D. So, label the line as 18m


STEP 2

From that second dotted point which represents the tower, draw another straight, dotted lines to the left and put a dot at the end to represent C. Label it as 24m. Why? The question says that, the tower is 24m due East of C


STEP 3
From the question , we know that points C and D are on the same horizontal ground. So, draw a straight line to join points C and D


STEP 4
Draw a straight line to join the line /CD/ from our initially dotted point that represents the tower. THAT STRAIGHT LINE YOU HAVE JUST DRAWN IS THE TOWER AB


STEP 5

We know from the question that the foot of the tower is A and the top is B. So, label the bottom that is now on the same line as /CD/ as A and label the top as B. You will then observe that the diagram is in line with the question as C,A and D are all on the same line.

I will attach the necessary pictures when I get on a phone I can snap with or when I can sketch. I am on the laptop now.
I hope this helps someone.

Note that in the diagram, a straight line was drawn fom D to the tower point to show that the tower point is due north. The line is not the tower

It is a tricky question. The whole idea is to make you realise that a horizontal level must not necessary be like this ----------------------------. It can be turned and still be a horizontal level. You attack these sort of questions by starting from the directions given and by following them step after step then everything will fall into place.

The problem is understanding english language (statement problems) not the mathematics. The question says C and D are different observation points at the foot of a tower A Ie the same plane. From there start making your analysis. And before you start your insults, (which I will not indulge you) why did you come out to say my diagram is wrong without checking your facts? However draw yours. If you came to learn stop being a spectator. I am not C. Ronaldo or Messi. Biko. I am SS3 teacher and I know what I drew there
