My Experience Buying A Used TV by Sellfish(m): 8:28am On Jun 12, 2019 |
So i decided to upgrade my old 37- inch LED TV to a bigger, newer, and better one....My budget was 150k and I didn't care if it was used or new...I sha wanted it at least 10 inches bigger, better and newer than my old one The major things I was looking out for were: Low power consumption....if the TV's operating power consumption is more than 50 watts, I am not buying .....I use an inverter so I don't need any yeye TV that will suck my power unnecessarily....I borrowed a watt meter from my nigga to check power consumption as I already knew I cant trust the power rating on TV labels. Screen mirroring.....I used to think USB playback on a TV was a very big deal until I went to this my uncle's house and saw his son play a full 1080p movie via his phone mirrored to their 60 inch TV...There was no loss in Quality of picture or sound...The mirroring was perfect in all aspects..I then made a mental note that my next TV was gonna have that...Screen mirroring or nothing HEVC video format playback capability and also ability to read SRT movie subtitle files....Basically 95% of all the TVs I had seen and operated including my old LG cannot play movies in HEVC format or even read SRT movie subtitle files ....That meant I basically had to do a laptop hdmi connection whenever I needed to read movie subtitles and/or play hevcs movie....Too stressful...Life should not be this hard ...So I needed a TV that could play anything playable via USB.. as in anything playable...My HDMI should be strictly for my Playstation Very good Color accuracy...I can see very well...one doctor said I have 20/20 vision...So I get very irritated if i have to look at a bad screen...exact reason why i stopped personally using laptops with less than 1920×1080p resolution ...So I needed a TV with a good color accuracy, deep blacks, nice viewing angles and sturvs...I needed my new TV to be almost as clear as my 1080p laptop screen .... Backlight dimming option....I hate having my screens too bright...So my new TV had to have an optional backlight setting....Many TVs i operated didn't have this feature....So their screens ended up being too bright and wasting power...reducing TV backlights reduces eye strain and the TV's power consumption drastically...I cannot come and go and buy something that will damage my near perfect eyesight...never Nice Upscaling capabilities....I needed a TV that will make even a 200mb movie reasonably watchable on it ..my old TV and many others I had seen did horribly in upscaling...so I made a mental note about that as well Other stuff I needed in the new TV was at least 3 USB one of which must be USB 3.0, 4 HDMI, memory card slot, ethernet port, functional Wifi, and an acceptable sound output...I cannot buy TV and come and go and be looking for soundbar to buy ....Of what use is a TV if it has pangolo sound... And i needed the new TV to be at least 55 inches...I kept extra 30k to add to the 150k in case 13 Likes 2 Shares |

So I start doing my research... I come on nairaland, read through all the TV sales threads of different sellers....They have a lot of nice TVs no doubt, but all of them were far from my location...and despite the majorly good reviews some of them had, I decided I will have to buy a TV after examining it myself physically....I took into consideration the fact that they are TV vendors, and may not fully appreciate my reasons for refusing a TV...besides, none of them ever stated the exact wattage of their TV's power consumption ....What the hell is the meaning of "low power consumption" ....180 watts can be low power consumption for some people, not me sha....So there goes one red flag How will I coman tell Acunon or Sommydisaster that I don't like the TV he sold to me because the movies skip on the TV when screen mirroring, or the wifi isn't as strong as I want ....Many things can be wrong with a TV, and even with the most honest of sales men, only a physical inspection by a buyer who knows what he is looking for may disclose such weaknesses... It was on nairaland I got to hear of 4k TVs...I then decided my TV had to be 4k as well ....I felt the bump in resolution will make the TV display better...What I later found out is a story for another day .... So I finally decided I was gonna go out to a shop, and buy my TV after extensive testing... So I put in a flash drive some movies with strange video formats, charged and loaded data for TV online research on my Samsung phone which also had smart view (that's Samsung's own screen mirroring app), and set out to buy my TV ....I also made a mental note not to be cajoled into going for less....I was fully ready to spend 6 hours testing TV before I pay... Person wey see me go think say na 2019 G-wagon I wan go buy .... all this wahala on top common TV...please leave me alone...You wont buy me a new one if I end up being dissatisfied with my purchase...180k is beans yeah ...but even spilling a pot of beans on the floor is painful 19 Likes 1 Share |

So I head out 1st to Fouani to go check out brand new TVs....I have nothing on me but my phone, a watt meter and a flash drive...no cash...if I get a nice TV, I will just do transfer... I get to Fouani and the showroom was filled with nice TVs with ostensibly nice displays . ..at 1st glance, all the TVs displays are cute...but I had read somewhere online that TV showrooms are built and lit in such a way as to greatly exaggerate TV displays ...So I just calmed down and held on to my checklist But any TV with even just half of my specs was above 250k ....and yeah...only TVs worth 400k or more could read the SRT subtitles and HEVC movies on my flash drive....I felt depressed I went to 4 other TV showrooms (LG, Samsung, Hisense and another LG) and the experience was generally the same... The only good thing about most TVs in those showrooms was that they seemed to have really low power consumption...in fact some of them had power packs that looked like laptop chargers...I actually tested with my watt meter one LG 55 inch 4k TV and its operating power consumption was just 34 watts...Price of the TV was 406k sha...so I ran away 14 Likes 1 Share |

Show room Tv cost no be here, but there's guaranty on product sold and after sales support. Buying new gadget is advicable in aspect of Tv. The used is a 50/50 due to damage and repairing. |

So I then muster courage and go to the used TV market...... There were many nice TVs .... I saw a Goodmans 58inch 4k TV for 150k....its screen was very shitty...no color accuracy, no backlight dimming option, and very bad upscaling capabilities....power consumption was also 180 watts .....Although it played my HEVC movies and Srt subtitles sha....but watching the TV was like looking at the display of a very low quality China Phone....very very bad display The Model number of that particular TV is Goodmans G58ANSMT-4K.....it has a lot of USB and hdmi ports sha..wifi connectivity is acceptable....screen mirroring is laggy and very unstable....but its worst weaknesses are its display and power consumption... ....58 inches of bad color So despite plenty English by the seller, I jejely left his shop 9 Likes |

In the next Tokumbo TV shop I entered, the best TV he has is this Hisense 55 inch 4k TV....Price was 140k It ticked almost all my boxes...except that when I plugged it to my watt meter, its operating power consumption was 130 watts ... But I noticed that I hear this humming noise when extremely close to the TV. And when the TV display is a pure white background, I could notice what appeared to be a very faint line... The seller said I am just imagining things and even invited some of his friends who also said they did not notice any humming sound or faint line on the TV... I pretended to agree and told the seller that hope he doesn't mind me watching the TV for a bit before I pay him..and I also told him to tell one of his boys to sit with me and watch the TV.. i had an uneasy feeling about the TV... I had already collected the seller's account number ....I supposed I would have paid for the TV once my doubts are cleared Barely 20 minutes into watching a movie, a very visible red line appeared in the middle of the TV Seller then said the line comes and goes as I can see, and it doesn't mean anything...I should ignore the line and go enjoy my TV ....in my mind I was like "shey this bobo put jazz for mouth ni" .... I just smiled, told him I am not buying and left the shop If u get a good one of this TV, and you dont mind 130 watts operating power, it's a good deal...it's supposed to be 4k according to the specs online but I actually saw no picture difference between it and a 1080p full HD TV.....so bear that in mind as well....Picture isn't exactly perfect but you will survive Below is a picture of the TV's specs sticker 11 Likes 1 Share

After patrolling the used TV Market for hours and basically only seeing scraps that are not even worth checking out for me, I come across this Samsung 46-inch TV... It isn't 4k but it's crystal clear with manageable speakers...in fact the display was much clearer than that Hitachi 4k TV I talked about earlier, and another 2017 LG 4k TV i saw earlier as well..it also basically ticked all my checklist except the power consumption part....its operating power consumption was 97 watts...and it does not play HEVC videos or support srt subtitles...screen mirroring function is perfect tho ....so I guessed I couldn't get all I need...since the screen mirroring was perfect, nothing stopped me from mirroring my hevc movies and srt subtitles from my phone to the TV using my phones VLC player...I tested that and it worked perfectly I was already beginning to realise I was going to have to sacrifice some functionalities for some others...Scaling of Preference had set in ... So I negotiated with the seller and we agreed on 136k including the TV wall bracket and installation .... I am sha already trying to transfer the funds to the seller when I tell him to set up the TV to connect to my phone's hotspot....The TV will detect my phone's hotspot and even ask for the password to be put...but it refused to connect We tried to connect the TV to my glo mifi...Same issue In fact we spent another hour trying to connect to different phone and other hotspots...no success....TV will see the hotspot but cannot connect even after putting in correct passwords or even removing the password totally and making the hotspot an open one The seller said he honestly had no idea the TV had such a problem...and I believed him because the screen mirroring which also uses wifi was working perfectly, and the TV could also detect hotspots but can't connect.... Much as I felt bad for the seller, there was no way I was going to sacrifice wifi connectivity...impossicant So I stopped the funds transfer to him and left his shop... The seller was a nice guy tho..he even paid for the rice I ordered to eat in his shop .too bad that Samsung had to mess him up like that See below the specs sticker of this tv 9 Likes

At this point I am depressed and tired and already considering continuing managing my old 37-inch LG TV ...so one cannot even see even common good TV to buy in this country ... in my mind I silently blamed Buhari for this my predicament .....For no reason, I just had to blame Buhari for my inability to get a good TV on this hot Wednesday Afternoon .... So I am about leaving the Tokumbo TV market when I noticed some TVs being offloaded off a truck into a shop...I walk in and ask them if they have any 4k TV above 50 inches for sale... The owner says he does but he tells me that there is this Panasonic 47-inch 1080p TV that just arrived...He said it beats all the other TVs he has and is even more expensive than all his 4k TVs...so I ask that I check the TV out... Well the seller gives mea a chair in the corner and hands me the remote of this Panasonic TV... Holding the TV remote alone, I knew I had hit jackpot ....it had this quality feel and a reasonable array of functions on it ...I just couldn't describe it, but I felt my search was over So I put on the TV, check it out for close to an hour..it ticked all my boxes except the fact that it couldn't play HEVC movies...but it did everything else perfectly including reading srt subtitles...The remote handed to me was the follow-Come one as well...The TV even had full voice control and a hidden HD camera for video calls .....I almost jumped in happiness .... But for the purpose of getting a good bargain from the seller, who may likely hike his price if he notices from my bodily expressions that i am pleased with his product, I added more frowns to my face and even wrinkled my nose and mouth in pretended dissatisfaction When he asked me what I felt about the TV, I just told him the TV isn't bad, but it has too many scratches ...that I wont mind something neater ....Yeah the TV had a few scratches which were clearly gotten during its transport...but they were nothing major ....I already knew i was going home with this TV So I finally seek the sellers permission to test the TV operating power consumption with my watt meter...TV clocks in at 47 watts ...my happiness increases I noticed the default backlight brightness was too much for me..so I reduced it to more comfortable levels...The TV's operating power further went down to 32 watts I further spent another 1 hour checking and cross checking the TV. Everything works flawlessly...other stuff which I never bargained for like voice control and the video call all worked flawlessly as well I went online and searched the TV's review ..the reviews were majorly good...so i was good to go...I negotiated the price and we agreed on 140k with wall stand and its installation... So I paid for the TV and left See below the specs sticker for the TV.... 14 Likes

My simple review of the Panasonic TX-47AS740B after about 1 week use... Everything works.... Screen Quality.....9/10....screen also has an auto dimming feature...meaning it adjusts itself to the light in the enviroment.....screen is crisp, clear and has wide viewing angles....I can hardly notice any difference in screen quality between it and my 14 inch 1080p laptop.... Screen mirroring works perfectly....I mirrored a 4gig 1080p movie (Gods of Egypt) via my Samsung a20 to the TV....not a single blur or skip...mirroring distance works from as far as 30 feet away from the TV....no reduction in video nor image quality at all.... Wireless and bluetooth also work perfectly....works perfectly as well....The inbuilt apps in the TV work perfectly.....Netflix and YouTube work perfectly....the tv browser also works well....na those ones concern me ...i have not had the interest or time to test other apps ... Power....with my current backlight settings, the TV consumes 32.5 watts when playing movies via USB, and 37.8 watts while using wifi or screen mirroring....I cant wish for better power management Connections....the TV has one USB 3.0 por which can be used for recording TV programmes to an external drive..i tested it a bit and it works...2 USB 2.0 ports for normal USB content play and 3 HDMI ports...i tested all and they work .... Camera.....You wont even know the TV has a camera until you open the video cam app inbuilt into the TV...then the camera slides up out of the top of the TV...once the video can app is closed, the camera automatically retracts itself back into the body of the TV...th camera is clear enough...but it could be better sha ....Though I have no complaints sha There is a fully functional micro-sd slot ...I put a 64 gig micro ad card in it and it now serves as the TV's memory for recording programmes... I also has free-TV....as in you can just get a dish connected to the TV and watch some nice channels for free....I have not tested that sha...I have no interest in free channels The Ethernet port also works for wired internet connection....I took the TV to my office to test that The TV has two 10-watt speakers which sound quite nice.... There are some other connection ports that the TV has that i have no need for...dem say one na SCART or somtin...e no consyn me ......thank God e dey sha in case I need them... The TV runs the Panasonic Viera operating system....once the TV is switched on, it takes barely two seconds to boot and be ready for use ....My one terabyte hard drive connected to the USB 2.0 port barely took 3 seconds to fully load up... On the whole, The TV is a very good buy and if you are practical like me, and not carried away by shady terms like 4k, UHD, etc, and a 47-inch screen is ok for you, you cant go wrong with this TV... Just try to get a brand new or faultless one 17 Likes 1 Share |

It will probably be an issue with network settings on the tv that need to be manually adjusted. https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/TV/Samsung-Smart-TV-stopped-connecting-to-internet-wifi-and/td-p/599710 1 Like |

dxdiag: Here in Nigeria Sir, after sales support is practically non-existent And for some reason, I will rather go for a foreign made TV rather than a TV made for Fouani Nigeria .....You know how quality control is in this country .... And all the brand new TVs I saw at the LG and fouani showrooms all had 'made for Fouani Nigeria' stickers in them .. As long as one gets a faultless foreign used TV, my humble opinion is that it will have more quality than any brand new one you can get in the country... One other thing is...I think LG and Samsung TVs are overrated in Nigeria....Hisense and Panasonic TVs are most times, better value for money 12 Likes |

Sellfish: Bro, you couldn't have adjusted all the settings in that short time. Read the link I provided, you will see other owners had a similar problem and after a while found different ways of making it work (usually involving adjusting the DNS which i think is probably the issue). My point is the tv is ok and it is not a hardware fault. 1 Like |
