The Chinese opened up their economy in 1975 and completely by 1978 onwards.

India started in the 90s

Chinese due to their totalitarian system were able to enforce their policies with iron hand and purse it without any stops and interference both internal and external.

India due to its democratic system had many hits and misses due to bad governments getting elected time and again , reform policies could not be continued as expected and this held back the economy. Nothing to say about the internal and external interferences which added to the problems.

One cannot compare 2 countries whose government system is completely different . Does not do justice to either.

i really doubt if china had a two-child policy before moving to one-child policy, They only implemented d two-child policy in 2013 to curb ageing population.

Having child policy is not an answer to all economic Misery. Every nation on earth have/will experience inflection point at a certain point in time...

I'm of the opinion that if the economy of a nation is robust and inclusive, and majority of the populace are educated..... they won't see d need to have more children than they can care for.

Check your history again. China started worrying about it population in 1950s and by 1960s had 2-child policy before it became 1-child policy - and later amendments was made for rural chinese or for those who got girls bla bla over the years.

Yes demographics alone doesn't explain everything but it's one of key factor - before you go to macro-economic policies and other socio-political issues.

I can give you example of kenya - kenya had same gdp with asian tigers at independence in 1960s - but asian tigers had different demographics - Kenya grew on average nearly 7-8% until oil crisis in post Arab-Isreal war in late 70s & later global oil crisis of 80s (nigeria enjoyed a boom time as everyone else gnashed their teeth) - about the same rate South Korea or Taiwan or Singapore or Malaysia - but while they grew wealthier - we were growing poorer. We were growing but per capita was going down because we also had actually the world fastest population growth - with our women getting on average 8 Kids - most in my village had 13-14 kids per woman and many were polygamous - so 1 man would gather for like 20 or 30 kids!.

We had done nearly everything the Asian tigers had done - except control our population. Yes oil crisis had for most part sabotaged our economy but our millions of kids were more damaging.

By late 70s and 80s - it became obvious that we weren't going anywhere. All the individual and nation wealth were going to provide food, education, health care and basic needs for all the kids. There was hardly anything left at family level to save or invest. The same with gov - gov had to keep building new schools that were never enough, employ teachers, build dispensaries that were never enough, and we were basically in rat race. kenya population had grown from 6M at independence in 1963 to nearly 20M in 1983! And by the turn of the century we were 30M!

So even though for two decades we did nearly everything the Asian tigers were doing - we became poorer and poorer.

Luckly for Kenya, we also began to take population control seriously, and now we are down to about 3 kids per woman, India are nearing 2 (in SSA only the likes of rsa/botswana/namibia have done it), and we are starting to see schools close because of lack of kids! People are now able to feed their kids better and have enough to save & invest, there are more workers, there are more taxes for gov to build infrastructure and the economy is growing at 6% (probably higher if we aggressively re-based like Ghana).

Yes other factors are important but nothing is more important for me than demography. The most important resource in the world is Human Capital - you can plan everything but it will come to naught if you don't plan human capital.

I can tell you for free - Nigeria is going nowhere - until it tames the north Nigerians breeding like rabbits.
