Mbbs is usually 6yrs + X . Hardly do you find a federal Univeristy in Nigeria where you'll spend exactly 6yrs. Mind you, you're yet to do your house job before you think of NYSC

If anyone is paying attention, everything in the country today is about money money money.

Value and morals have gone out of psych. No wonder Nigeria made all that money only to create the greatest number of poor people in the world.

When are we going to learn? Teachers used to be the most Noble profession.

I spent 6 years in school without extra years.
I sat for 5 exams (one sessional and 4 professionals)
1st professional was about straight 18 months including weekend for tutorials after which I had 2 weeks break
2nd professional lasted about 16 months with one week break afterwards
3rd professional lasted 14 months with one week break afterwards
Lastly 4th professional called final MB lasted about 10 months then hurray, you're a doctor


For the engineers while in school, they spent 5 years in all without extra year, 2 semesters per year with 4 months long vacation per year normally,
In all, Engineers spent 10 semesters in school with gaps while doctors spent at least 18 uninterrupted semesters excluding 12 uninterrupted months for internship before full licensing.

Take prejudice away, forget the so called nobility associated with the profession.
Dear OP, even if you're so liberal a parent, you'll count yourself lucky n life, if your child ends up a doctor.

This is not true. At silicon valley, those techies/engineers earn millions of dollars a year. MD's at Jon Hopkins do not earn that in a life time of practice.

In Nigeria medicine is overrated, engineering is not valued. I am an engineer talking from experience. Work, power and housing ministry is currently headed by a barrister while health ministry is headed by a doctor. That says a lot. Apart from that, how many Nigerians building think they need the service of qualified engineers? How many even know service engineers exist? But they know doctors exist. Engineering is not a field of human endeavor appreciated and cherished by the society and it somehow affects the mentality of those who study the course too. To be successful as an engineer in this clime need a lot of passion and doggedness

Dentists are Surgeons, hence are regarded as medical doctors (they are also trained in Medicine and surgery alongside their dental surgery training). Hence they are also placed in level 12. Both Medical and Dental graduates all belong to the same body of Doctors, so there's no disparity between them (Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria). But Optometrists are not physicians nor surgeons so are not placed on the same level with the duo.

One of the most corrupt institution in this country is the medical institutions.
Doctors steal a lot especially the ogas.
They embezzle aids donated by foreign organisation, they strike deals with medical sales reps to sell drugs very EXPENSIVELY.
They own private hospitals and forcefully redirect patients to the hospitals in order to Robb them.
Most medical directors are worse than senators.
They divert funds.

I want to know what engineers do in civil service then compare this with what doctors do, then your answer is not far fetched. I don't really know why someone will choose to be redundant in the civil service (because many engineers in the civil service don't get to practice at all there)and still wants to be placed on same level with people that are not even well paid for the kind of services they rendered.

That's what people don't understand. Being a doctor is all about being comfortable, u don't have to be extremely rich, but u will be very comfortable with u earn to take care of family easily. Everybody want to see a doctor when they are sick, and yet they continue to battered them online. So unfair.

Just asking, why is that Nigerian Doctors get grey hair earlier than other professional in the country? If u know the answer u will understand that level 12 is nothing to what they are passing thru

I think Engineering should be above level 08 for a graduate entry

Even at that, i still have colleagues of mine still in med school who started around 2007, 2008...

All im trying to say is that 6 years is not always 6 years. If a doctor spent 6 years studying medicine in our Nigerian system, then he's absolutely lucky.

Moreover, the training involved is very tedious, depressing, frustrating and all of that. You cant compare it to the training involved to get a PhD in engineering. Go to a proper Nigerian medical school and see what the students go through. I'm very sure your mindset will change

In construction companies we have fewer expatriate compared to the number of Nigerian Engineers. Most of the these expatriate are not Engineers but rather those that are well experienced in the field of practice. Hence, experience is key in the field of engineering. I don't see any difference with the way expatriate are preferred to our Engineer's and that of the medical fields. Expatriate get involved in a very large construction projects, since most of them had already partook in such. You don't usually see them involve in residential buildings unless if the buildings are blocks of flat in form of high rise buildings then clients might involve the expatriate. It is all down to the client's preferences, same as in the medical fields. How many heart transplant surgery had been done in the country? The most major medical problems are treated outside the country, even the poor will rather source for funds from the public. The major things that are carried out at our hospitals are prescribing of drugs, common surgical practices that the resident doctors must have witnessed hundreds of times. The present Dangote refinery been under construction is a project that eludes even our lecturers, even over 80% of the expatriate at the site has never done it before, is that the type of project you expect an engineering graduate to design and construct? If only a fresh Nigerian graduate with MBBS can perform a heart transplant.

I thought I'd seen the last of these engineering is on same level as medicine wailers. Engineering is 5 years before NYSC. Medicine is 6 years minimum (I know fellas who have repeated multiple times) after which two years of houseman ship then NYSC. So the doctor actually spends three more years in school.

Medicine is far more rigourus than engineering especially in Nigeria where engineering dubs it best is a popular catch phrase.

In every western nation, doctors are the highest paid salaried employees. This even applies in the middle east with migrant workers.

I suggest you stop wailing about something you do not have the stones to go through with. Amazing that educated Nigerians are jealous of people charged with keeping them healthy.

Have you availed yourself of the statistics of Engineers working abroad? I don't know where you got this notion from. It is a generalized fact that most Nigerian universities churn out half-baked graduates, regardless of the course of study.
