No Immediate Plan To Ban Almajiri System — Presidency by Pamatips: 7:05am On Jun 22, 2019
The Presidency on Friday clarified the Federal Government’s position on the Almajiri system, saying that while proscribing it remained an ultimate goal, there was no immediate plan to ban the system.

The Presidency stated that in pursuing the objective of ensuring that every Nigerian child had compulsory basic education, the government would consult relevant authorities widely before taking a decision on whether to ban the Almajiri system or not.

In a statement by Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, the Presidency noted that the reactions trailing the President’s speech at Thursday’s meeting of the National Economic Council were needless, as he had yet to pronounce a ban on the system.

It said, “Indeed, the Federal government wants a situation where every child of primary school age is in school rather than begging on the streets during school hours. At the same time, we don’t want to create panic or a backlash.

The National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno ( retd.), while briefing State House Correspondents after the NEC meeting on Thursday, had said that the government would eventually ban the system.

He had stated, “The group I spoke about on illiteracy is the Almajeri. Ultimately, government will have to proscribe this Almajiri phenomenon.

The obvious fact is that politicians are benefiting from the almajiri system. It was the almajiris that gave PMB buck of his votes in the north. I told a friend on Tuesday that the Federal Government will not have the political will to stop the almajiri system.

What northern elites have been doing over the years is to prevent millions of these almajiri from getting out of the circle of poverty and illiteracy and brainwashed them with a false sense of religious piety so that they will be foot soldiers on the the chess board of politics.

But we are gradually getting to the time when these almajiris will start creating greater problems and nuisances to the north. If care is not taken, the north will become a no go area for the elites.

PMB should take the bull by the horn and abolished the almajiri system.

Temporary setback. The advocacy continues. Innocent children of Northern Nigeria must be saved from this crude system that destroys their future. Like Berlin Wall, Almajiri system will surely fall in due time.

learn to see things from positive view.

The almajiri system existed before the existence of this country... but it has been bastardized because the students (almajiri) now roam d street n for food, which is not supposed to be.

The Govt can't ban it immediately, they don't want panic n backlash from people like that mumuric Ishaq Akintola. Reason they want to consult relevant authorities ( I guess the Emirs and religious leaders and any related body ) before implementing d ban in a gradual process.

Prescribing it is an ultimate goal, according to d president but it has to pass through the right process.

How would they ban a system that benefits the elite. The almajiri system is focused on keeping the people of the north docile, a terrible feudal system which is religiously enshrined. They are just block voting tools to the northern elite, nothing more.

As far as that system exists, Boko Haram, bandits and herdsmen will never lack foot soldiers.

North is a whole lot of problem undecided

Definition of Almajir = are those born illegally or without proper care, no parent to care for them. The attached them to Mallam teaching them Islamic only, begging for food house to house, suffering without no one to care for them. while the grown up with that bitter intention. No human feelings and start hustling, bolar, pick and sell. Then graduate to okada rider, or keke. and they know nothing except Islam and which they so much believe in all this their imam. And follow all their order. Either good or bad. Then later recruit to Boko Haram. Coz they lack western knowledge. And get brainwashed. Nothern Politicians uses them as weapon, in all perspective... Consultation is good but FG needs to take a firm stand and place a total ban on it Almajiri system has brought a lot of woes to us in this country. There are times a leader needs to step on toes and be bold damming the consequences,Trump's stand on building border walls to check the illegal immigrants was firm and in the end he had his way.
