I think the thumb printing stuff started not too long. She should just prepare for her test and await whatever outcome, cos to be candid, there is nothing she can do right now.

Hello!
How can I study for GRE aiming at 300 and above combined with working from 8 a.m to 6pm.
I need funding
I intend writing September to meet deadline.
I don't know the strategy of practicing a lot combined with work.
I'm not an Engineering student; so I see the Maths part as my weakness.
How can I ace my targeted score with no coaching in Maths. I'm a biology student.

Thank you

You can as well email graduate coordinators/professors. You can start now. Attach your academic transcript and CV for his/her perusal, asking them to rate your credentials for admission and full funding. If you are a very strong candidate( your transcript and research experience should show this) I bet you, they will beg you to apply for their program and may even offer you application fee waiver. I had a similar experience where a grad coordinator of a very good school in the US, told me that I am definitely the kind of student that they are interested in, and went on to tell me about TA and full funding, and his hope in hearing from me about the matter. The GRE is just one aspect of your credentials. Build on others as well. Good luck!!

Hi everyone!
Please I need help,
I need to contact potential supervisors for admission in some schools in canada and I particularly don't know how the body of the mail should be like, especially the ones I'm interested in their area of research but don't have the experience at all.
Ma and sirs, I will really appreciate if I can get any help at all, references, links, words and all. Thanks in anticipation.

Boss I am new here and I need help. I am one of the new beneficiaries of the pdtf, I chose IFP France and I was given petroleum economic and management. On checking the school portal I realised admission closed since march 30th. What can I do? My first degree is mechanical engineering with 4.12 CGA from unilorin with 7 years working experience in university of Oye Ekiti. I don't want to sit for IELTS or gre . Please put me through. Kindly treat this as urgent requests boss.

I don't know if this issue has been resolved and what your plans are -sorry I am just responding. If you are dogged you can still use PTDF to go to the US but you will need to drown out the dissenting voices of naysayers as I have been reading and hearing most of them. I believe a PTDF scholar went to Uni of Lincoln Nebraska without a GRE. I also think there is a middle man PTDF scholar who can help you get into Auburn without one as well.

I would still recommend that you took it to open more doors for you in future. I personally feel going to the UK is a waste of time and money from a long-term perspective.

Good afternoon, I have followed this thread closely and I want to appreciate everyone contributing to this thread.
In the light of the question asked by Nassiirr, I also have a very disturbing question to ask, more like I want an advice.

A friend of mine said she was used as a mercenary years back, to help someone write a GRE test. She was stupid, she had no idea that it's very wrong, illegal and could haunt her. She regrets that action now anyway!

The thing now is, she is to write the GRE test for herself in one of the coming months, she's afraid her thumbprint and facial recognition software will reveal that she had taken the test for someone else in the past, and she'll not be allowed, or maybe get arrested.

How do you think she can get past this, or this really isn't a big deal?

I will appreciate your input please, nagode

I suspect you are your friend.

Be that as it may, at the time when mercenary use was rampant in the GRE, biometrics were not yet employed. Consequently, I believe she can take her GRE unscathed.

I will still sue for more tact and honesty going forward. There was a fellow NL member who used a mercenary for her GRE and ETS subsequently found her out and withdrew her score report. I believe she lost her admission as well.

Please someone should help me out here. I want to know if I am to take the Quantitative aspect of the GRE only, is that possible?

You are to write all sections.

They are only saying that these days the GRE quants can act in lieu of the GMAT which was not the case some years back when many thought the GRE maths was easier.

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Stevenssen(m): 7:47am On Jun 26, 2019
So I wrote the GRE last week Monday.
Quantitative : 153
Verbal : 155
AWA : 4.0

I prepared for the exam within 2 months, 95% of my studying was on the quant section with 5lb Manhattan book.
I hardly studied for the verbal. The only verbal stuff I studied was the 101 word list on crunchprep (which was helpful)
I did not practise the AWA, not even once. I just read some sample and scored essays on the ets site. You can look them up.

Advice : When studying the quant section, especially if you're using 5lb Manhattan book, study these topics well because they are the most frequent :
Word problems.
Two variable word problems.
Geometry (esp angles).
Ratios, percents and fractions .
Algebra.
Inequalities and absolute values.
Data interpretation (they too love this section) cheesy
Improve your vocabulary for the verbal. Its materials are the easiest to get since you can just google "Frequent gre words" and many results will come out. Also take the practice test! So you can get used to reading their comprehensions and keeping your focus. This is an arduous task.

For the AWA, read samples from ets official site. The samples are scored and analyzed for you. Also practice writing essays quickly.

The best way to get the 'feel' of the actual exam is by taking practice tests. When taking practice tests, please for your sake, DO NOT GUESS. Any questions you are not sure of, just leave them blank. This is because you might get lucky with your guesses and overestimate your potentials or progress. But on exam day, you might not be so lucky with the guesses.
The answers to all questions on the practice test can be found on Google. So use that to correct yourself.
My first practice test : Q 147 V 148
2nd practice test : Q 150 V 149

On test day I realized that the quant section exam was more difficult than the practice tests. I was very disappointed because I used almost all my time to prepare for it while I ignored other sections. I ended up guessing on about 13 quant questions within the three sections that I wrote on it. Not because I couldn't solve them, but because they were taking so long and I ran out of time each time. So learn to solve those questions quickly.

I finished the verbal sections, usually with 9 minutes or more left.

I trusted myself on the AWA because I am good at writing, but the time is barely enough so I had to conclude all my essays prematurely. I would have done better if I had practised it.

Some tips : Try to keep your calm, don't panic. My panicking made me unable to solve the first 2 quant questions that I saw. I later went back to them and solved them easily.
Ignore the questions that are too difficult for you and go back to them later,
Do not leave any questions blank, guess on the ones you do not know,
Read the comprehensions very carefully before answering.

Conclusion : The GRE is not an easy exam, it's quite exhausting both to prepare for and to write.
So start preparing as soon as you can.
The 5lb Manhattan was the only book I prepared with. But there are many other helpful books out there. If you know how to download with torrent, you can easily find these books on 'pirate bay' .
Study like mad. You do not want to write this draining exam twice.
Good luck!

Congratulations. Good to see that you actual score is better than the practice test.
My first practice test was 296: Q 150 V 146.
Since then I've been unable to get pass that score.
2nd practice test worse : Q 146 V 141.

I told myself I wont write until I score at least 310 in the practice test, and this is my 4 month of preparation.

Thanks for sharing (This is one of the purposes of this thread). Yeah, the quantitative section seemed like another ball game for me too on the test day. No better advice than, "Stay calm!".

TOEFL should not be a big issue for you with the GRE prep.
You should start contacting grad coords and Potential supervisors if you haven't, and also preparing your SOP and recommendation letters.

Yes you can 2020!

The truth is there's no assurance you may still apply to the schools you choose now even after making careful selections (my own perception).

In my own case I had gotten some positive responses from professors in some universities of which I had previously used "gradcafe ....... (you should fill in the course of interest e.g., gradcafe plant biotech )" to find funded students with similar profiles to mine (I had to assume my TOEFL and GRE scores here, since I hadn't written them like you). If you've gotten some positive responses and these universities have funded students with profiles similar to what you anticipate, then you could select 1 ambitious, 2 moderate and 1 safe school for the 4 choices. If you've not gotten any positive responses, then you could still make use of gradcafe and "msinus" to assess your profile and make choices.
Unfortunately or fortunately, I eventually applied to only one of those schools and choose other schools after seeing my GRE scores. Why? You could change your mind on the schools to apply to after seeing your scores. You may want to apply to more ambitious schools if you score higher than you anticipated or vis a vis.
Even if you select other schools to apply to later other than what you've selected now, these new selections may just require unofficial TOEFL and GRE scores for the time being.

All this long talk for your question grin
I hope this helps. wink

If you are aiming fall2020, by now you should have written the GRE, TOEFL or be in the process of writing soon.
To get safe schools that matches your profile with availability of funds, I will advice you use sites like gradcafe,Msinus, Usnews etc.
Ensure you visit the site of this schools, mail the grad coordinators and shortlist the schools you believe you are more likely to enter with funding too.
