He should look into the infrastructure disrepair of some public schools especially the one in Rumuapara.

Some of these schools you have 30 desks and 150 students in a class, Teachers don't have desks.

Even though I'm one of his supporters, I didn't welcome the idea of free education, we have many issues we are battling with in the state- road network, dilapidated school structures, indiscriminate dumping of wastes, non-payment of pensions and so on

Dumb fools be cheering free education at primary and secondary level and they resort to calling rochas okorocha all sorts of name forgetting that with the little resources available to IMO state unlike the vastly rich oil states and lagos with massive IGR rochas achieved free education at tertiary level. While lasu was crying cause of fees increment. Free education at university level even if one has to pay little at primary and secondary level.

GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS are free in the US, UK and AUSTRALIA.
People start paying when they get to COLLEGES.
In fact Grants are awarded to students.
Education is a RIGHT and not a privilege
U still see it as a privilege.
They have gone beyond what you are thinking now

If we started paying the kind of taxes they pay in the US, UK and Australia to maintain that free educaiton here in Nigeria, the cry from most Nigerians would be 'Our politicans are exploiting us again'.

Our budget is less than the budget of some US states for example...who don't have as much population as we do.

It is harsh, but the reason why we have bad government schools is because of 'free education'. The education budget in Nigeria is less than 5 billion dollars. In Canada its 50billion or more for just primary and secondary education.

I agree our government and politicans have stolen from us, but to be honest, Nigeria is not making enough money. Our revenue from oil is not enough. Even returning to agriculture and mines might only make things slightly better.

Yes, our leaders had 'free education'...back in the days when less than 10% of kids were in school (as at independence...and the number went down to 2% in the Nawth)...so governments could afford free education...plus there was the incentive of training people to replace the whites who were leaving us. Not now where the population is far larger....

If you want free quality education like the US, UK and Australia and even Denmark , you should be prepared for tax rates that would chop half your salary....and fees into the bargain.

Our CAPITAL budget is less than the New York CITY police department...
But still with better management, we could provide much better public education. It’s been done BEFORE in Nigeria!

Education is NEITHER a right nor a privilege...
Rather it is somewhere in the middle as a desirable.

To the extent that we can afford it (and I think we can)....
Basic education (perhaps up to JSS3) should be universal and free.

BTW, what you call “free” public education in the US is actually “paid” for by parent’s taxes...
That’s why there’s a huge disparity in the quality of US public education between the poor inner cities and the wealthier suburbs.

Is there really anything as free primary and secondary School education when we already have United Nations backed" universal basic education?"... which guarantees free education from primary to some level in secondary School?

Not a big deal for Rivers state, the state is super rich with the Tax collected from oil companies operating in the state and their staff. They pay maximum tax of about 22% for every Naira they earn
