President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Dr Thomas Maurice Asuquo John as the alternate chairman of the NNPC.

Dr John joined the NNPC in 1974 and rose to become its group managing director (GMD) from 1990-1992.

Dr. Thomas John serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Hydropec Engineering Services Limited. Dr. John was the first Manager of the Kaduna Refining & Petrochemical Company and the pioneering Managing Director of Eleme Petrochemicals Company, Port Harcourt before rising to become the Group Managing Director of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He serves as Non-Executive Director at South Atlantic Petroleum Limited. After retiring from NNPC, he served on the Board of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) as a Non-Executive Director. Dr. John holds an MSc in Chemical Engineering from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology, Czech Republic, a PhD in Reaction Kinetics from Queens University, Ontario, Canada and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (FNCHE).

There are a lot of misconceptions on this thread, mainly because a lot of people did not read the tweets, but also partly because some people just want to complain.


1) This appointment is only temporary. The law states that the minister of petroleum resources is the chairman of the NNPC board. However, there is no minister at the moment, so Dr Thomas John has temporarily been appointed the chairman of the board until a minister is confirmed by the Senate. Ibe Kachikwu was the chairman of the board until May 29th, but there has been a vacuum since then because there is no minister of petroleum resources.


2) The chairman of the NNPC board is not the chief executive of the NNPC. The chief executive is the group managing director (GMD). President Buhari appointed a new GMD (Mr Kyari) last week.

3) The position of the chairman of the NNPC board is a part-time position. The GMD oversees the day to day operation of the NNPC, not the chairman.


4) Dr Thomas John worked at the NNPC from 1974-1992 when he left the corporation. He has not been at the NNPC continuosly since 1974. He got to the position of GMD before he left the corporation

It is because the young men when giving the chance will start finding avenues to upgrade themselves and chop life as the hunger wey dey their body don plenty. An older more experienced person is more likely to bring stability to the organisation. Imagine giving an under 40 person the chairman of NNPC ?! They will more than likely embezzled as much money as they can looking the rhetoric and comments of young people on social media nowadays. Gov Yahaya Bello of Kogi is a classic example.
