Good one from the young lad, Nigerian youths should learn to stand for their rights and what is right.. and only give up such right at their own discretion..

For me Soyinka was only trying to use complex psychology on the young lad, if it was an honest mistake like his son claimed, it wont have created such uproar.

By nature of his intellectual abilities and his travel history, saying that he made a mistake in seating on that seat due to old age perhaps is what people may find it difficult to believe. However, it is possible that he made a mistake. If it were me and I had no strong reason for sitting by the window, I would have politely pointed it out to him that he sat on my seat, so that he knows and i would have just occupied his aisle seat. Case closed. I have many times and very recently given up my seat for couples and families that want to stay together.

The youth was well within his rights but could have done better by showing some respect for an icon. Bulk of the blame should be heaped on Tonye Cole the attention seeking cunt for uploading pictures and not allowing the incident slide.

What was Cole even thinking when he uploaded the photo of the young man. Like he wanted the dude lynched or what?
You labelled Tonye Cole, a whole owner of Sahara Energy. What have you achieved in your entire life

Is he not part of those that supported this evil govt even though he knew they were demons?

Concerning the issue of FRSC, I would not give you a response on that since you just spewed rubbish and gibberish . How does colour of the uniform and poor service correlate ? Who always has the duty to change the condition of service ? Can the service he created with little resources he had at the establishment be changed at will by any subsequent federal government or FRSC administrators? What was the rational for the colour of FRSC as at them and even till now? Answer all the questions and you will be the wiser.

Call it the infringement of Western culture or absolute disregard for our cultures and traditions, you're very far from making sense mister, with this kind of indiscretion from the youth populace I fear for the future of this country.

It is not disregard, it is the right thing to do.... where has the cultures and traditions of old taken us to?... but rather it has left us with aged men in their 90's as leaders..

To think of it, these same leaders actually ruled better in their young years, but would ride on our gullibility under the guise of culture and tradition to steal the stake of the youths.

So sorry sir, if the comment does not conform with yours but it's time the youths realize they are equally created aswell.

It's not unnecessary, its a rich write up that many will learn from.I cant even write like this,I wish I can.
Goke7:
this is unnecessary mr soyinka, let it pass as it does not reduce the respect Nigerians have for your father. Even the youths supporting the young man over your father still respects and admire prof. It's just one incident haba so need for any 1998 history. Let it go as we will continue to love and admire prof.

I think this issue is being overflogged.
Let's analyse the players:

Prof. W.S;
He is over 80 years, so it is very possible that he took that seat by mistake
If it was deliberate and he prefered window seats for obvious reasons, he should have planned it better-Ask for the seat during booking, most airlines would be happy to indulge him.
He didn't see it as a big deal so he got up. There's absolutely nothing petty about WS.

Bobo Fine;
He is young and probably exuberant and may not have recognised or even known WS
He may have gone the extra mile to get a window seat
He is opinionated and non-conventional
We don't know his story (no one actually knows this guy's story so we can't keep judging him). He might have a condition, he might have been unstable, goodness knows!
He was operating within his rights so he actually commited no crime.

Tonye Cole:
Was okay to have tried to reason with Bobo Fine but should have stayed out of it after the incident.
Had no business uploading that picture.
Probably did it to trend and gain national popularity for his Guber ambition.

Nigeria:
There's already the underlying issue of lawlessness and lack of regard for orderliness.
There's also the issue of the elders' demand for respect and their sense of entitlement.
Also, many Nigerians will rather go sentimental and more often than not, the real issues are left unaddressed.

Me:
I totally totally adore Prof. Wole Soyinka, I've read almost everything he has published and his views and policies resonate with me. I will consider it a privilege for him to have my seat on a plane (deliberately or mistakenly).

That said, If i catch any unidentified elder on my seat, you will surely have to 'gbe bodi' but i will definitely demand it very politely.

It's not really about respect. I have maximum respect for senior citizens. I defer to ladies, children and the elderly.

I just think we have to restore order and enforce some basic social principles so that this country can have a good shot at working.

You nailed it.

I like the part of Dr. Olaokun Soyinka's post where he alluded to the fact that youthful people think it is far; and that the youth of today will soon become elders of tomorrow.

If the young man truly disrespected the respected Prof, he should pray that in his old age, at over 80 years old like Soyinka, young people would not disrespect him too. If otherwise, he acted within his rights.

Another angle to the issue is the clear contribution that the stoppage of History as a subject in our schools has caused to diminish the youth of today!

Did you know that this same Soyinka helped Biafra to hijack a radio station during the Civil War and was jailed by the Nigerian Military Federal Government?

Did you know that Soyinka has always been a human rights advocate all his life?

He fights every Government's indiscretions- without any preference. His fights during the Abacha years is worthy of being written as a book! He had endless rallies for Jonathan to become President when the cabal under Yar'Adua did not. When Jonathan lost his head, he did not hesitate to criticize him. He also supported Buhari, but when Buhari started making mistakes, he has written countless statements and granted many interviews attacking Buhari.

To me, Soyinka has been consistent! He is not one of the rotten ruling class of his generation.

Prof Wole Soyinka deservedly earned his stripes through global literature and human rights activism!

I RESPECT THE GRAND OLD MAN OF LITERATURE; WOLE SOYINKA, THE GOLDEN PRIDE OF AFRICA AND THE BLACK RACE!

WHERE IS THAT USELESS AND DISRESPECTFUL BOY THAT LACK MANNERS, DECORUM AND AFRICAN CULTURE FOR ELDERS?

I want to drum some senses into his brain after giving him some STROKES OF THE CANES IN HIS BUM BUM.

Even Seun Kuti the late fela son was defending that stubborn boy.

Seun Kuti should realise that current french President, Mr Macron showed respect to his father by coming all the way from France to honour his father music and contribution to the emacipation of the black man.

It is not easy to get to that level so when you see such person you use WISDOM AND COMMONSENSE to give it to whom it is due forget the socalled I FIRST COME rules.

RESPECT TO THE NOBLE LAUREATES WHO HAS BEEN FIGHTING FOR THE GREATNESS OF THE NIGERIA STATE.

IN EVERYWHERE YOU MEET AN ELDERLY PERSON IN AFRICA OR EUROPE SHOW RESPECT BECAUSE YOU WILL GET THERE SOMEDAY AND OTHERS WILL ALSO HONOUR YOU.

Words from an intelligent and learned man. I took time to read this episode and yes it made sense. Respect is earned and the great WS earned it. The young man knew it was him and wanted to play the MR RIGHT part. Respect for elders is key and cannot be compromised. Like some good young guys would always leave the front seat of a commuter/commercial bus for the elderly, that is respect naturally earned as senior citizens. Have we all wondered why these elderly ones don't queue in banks, that is respect to nature. We will be elders someday and would want to be treated with great courtesy and respect.............................. YOUTHS MAKE WE LEARN OOOOOO. Our anger should be directed to our bad leaders and not patriots.

Tonye Cole should tender a public apology for making Nigerians drag Prof this much.

Tonye thought posting this will bring lots of bashing to the young man and hailings and sympathy to Prof. But unfortunately for him, he ended up making Nigerians embarrass Prof this much.

What damage exactly? He started cult you mean? You people should get this correctly, it was an action group then, just like The Students' Union to speak for students, people later turned it into something else.
Was it done in the secret then or were people reported killed?
Was Kegite not a gyrations group where people go and relax after hectic school works? Are they not doing initiation and other fetish things now? Will you blame the originator for their present actions?
Can the manufacturer of AK47 be blamed for terrorism? Was that his intention of inventing it?

Some said he supported a bad leadership, are Redeem members who voted en mass for Oshibanjo responsible for his action and utterances? You support someone because you assume he is good but the person didn't meet up to expectations, are you supposed to be castigated for that?
