His death brings to an end a hunger strike an activist group, RINK, said was intended to protest against his over three years detention.
As recently as June 2018, Japan held about 1,500 detainees, nearly half of them for over six months.

Some 604 were asylum seekers whose applications were rejected, while the rest were held for various immigration infractions such as overstaying visas.

Why detaining them indefinitely over small and simple issues like this? Why not simply put them on a plane back to their countries?

Not only you. I was equally there for few years and I even worked with the Japanese police. They are superficially nice and soulless. I was mentally and emotionally tormented all through my stay there. I even started a new program (Phd) after my MSc, but left to another country when I couldn’t bear it anymore.
Unconquerable:
I lived in Nippon (Japan) for almost 13 years. I must say whoever decides to embark on such in Japan should be willing to die and be cremated. Japanese are naturally quiet but I don’t think any other people in this world are as ruthless and heartless as them. I decided to come back home to Nigeria and even with all the crap here I realize I am better off emotionally and mentally than I was there.

You think they care? When they know we are hooked on Toyota vehicles and electronics!

Nigerians purchase second hand vehicles and equipment by Japanese companies. Even the top importers of tokunbo vehicles in Africa, Nigeria ain't among. So any action taken against Japanese companies will be inconsequential.

@Topic: That's the price for migrating to a country illegally. Japan like most of developed Asia doesn't practice "funky politics" which its euphemism is "progressive politics", so the law is taken on anyone as it's. If you must to migrate to Japan, do so legally. Tokyo, the world's most populated city, is the safest globally, and it's so for a reason.

Japan has a law which allows her to detain arrested individuals for as long as she likes. It's not a small issue, the degree of any issue should be measured by the country's institutions not by anyone else.

An unidentified Nigerian man has died in a Japanese immigration detention centre, an official who did not want to be named said on Thursday, Igbere TV reports.

His death brings to an end a hunger strike an activist group, RINK, said was intended to protest against his over three years detention.

Igbere TV learnt that the man, in his 40s, died on Monday in the southern city of Nagasaki after he lost consciousness and was taken to hospital.

Foreigners being held in Japan have recently resorted to hunger strikes to protest their lengthy detention.

About 27 foreigners are said to be on hunger strike at a detention centre in Ushiku, northeast of Tokyo.

The Nigerian’s death was the 15th since 2006 as critics decry poor medical facilities and emergency response in the detention centres.

An official at the national immigration agency said authorities are providing medical care and trying to persuade those on hunger strike to eat.

As recently as June 2018, Japan held about 1,500 detainees, nearly half of them for over six months.

Some 604 were asylum seekers whose applications were rejected, while the rest were held for various immigration infractions such as overstaying visas.

I'm still trying to get my head around why seeking asylum is so grave a crime that warrant you to put the seekers in detention indefinitely to the point where they are committing suicide in droves by going on indefinite hunger strike and you still don't give a flying fvck.
You can justify it, you can make sense out of it. But for me, I can't.
