It's a beautiful Sunday, the start of a brand new week and the last day in June 2019. We had lots of visa approvals this month and reasons to be grateful. Sadly, we equally had denials and now I am concerned about the latter.
So this one's for all who got denied recently, contemplating and probably getting ready to refire, this one's for all the ones wondering why the VO didn't give them a chance to speak, to explain, this one's for all who forgot a particular document and got sent away, this one's for the ones who froze at the sight of the VO, became blank and couldn't utter meaningful sentences, this one's for all those wondering if they can make it in the next attempt, this one's for all those who have cried their eyes out and no longer have tears to shed, for the ones who have screamed so hard and have lost their voices, this one's for the ones who have been snatched by the piercing claws of depression, who have been pulled into the darkness and their lungs gasping for air that isn't forthcoming, this one's for all those wondering what exactly went wrong, this one's for the ones questioning God and wondering why He let this happen, I mean where is God when bad things like visa denials happen!

If you truly want this, if you are genuine, if you are truly worthy, if you believe you deserve this visa, then you really are and you really do . You will not go down without a fight, the entire universe is waiting for the manifestation of your gifts, waiting to see you rise from the ashes and give the loudest roar. This is your moment, take it. The glory of the latter shall be greater than the former.

me - I'm going for my masters degree in business Administration at Southwest Minnesota state university,my concentration will be on Agribusiness management
Vo: what course was your undergraduate?
Me: Agricultural Engineering

VO: when did you graduate
Me: I graduated 2017. There was an ASUU strike afterwards which delayed my NYSC till MARCH 2018. During the period of the strike i went for a training as a Business analyst at CIEL consulting institute. I thereby completed my NYSC programme April 2019. I'm currently undertaking a contract staff position at dufil prima foods as assistant business analyst, I've been working there for 2 months now.

All these stories for that simple question. VOs hate to be bored with verbose story lines. I struggled to make a distinction between when you effectively graduated and when you started and completed your national assignment You need to be short and direct. For a conversation of 2-3 minutes, don't be shocked if you meet an inpatient VO who would call off the interview at this point. I don't know when you started your College program and how long the said strike lasted, but suffice to simply answer " Month and year of graduation - PERIOD

If the VO wants to prod you further, they may ask: Any backlog? You could them simply say that there was an academic strike action that occasioned the little delay. Any other detail you supplied above is extraneous.

VO- Why the career change from Agricultural Engineering to business Management?
ME- While i was in the university i realized that i had a strong passion for discovering and promoting young entrepreneurs, and also organizing events. I have discovered and promoted over 150 startup brands here in Nigeria so upon graduation i realized that this was what i wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I am pursuing this degree to build my expertise, expand my network and capacity for impact in this sector.

VO : What will this course do for you? OR Why MBA?

me : Asides from the managerial skills and leadership skills this would allow me to gain, It will help me to learn and network with a diverse class of people whom I would have come across from different parts of the world. This skills are very important and useful for advancing my career into senior engineering and management position and would greatly improve my chances of an early transition into executive roles , advisory roles and top notch consulting when i return.This degree will also give me a competitive advantage when applying for top management positions in other fmcg companies in Nigeria like Nestle nigeria plc,Unilever,p&g, and PZ cussions.

Your opening lines here are vulnerable. When you say international network here, were you planning to settle down there? Your job here is to prove home ties whilst still explaining how the program will rub of on your personal skills.

VO: What will you do after your program? or What will you do after your degree or how will an mba help you?
Me: My aunt heads the Human resource unit of the Dufil Prima foods and she's informed me of ongoing recruitment of young graduates with advance degree in business administration to work in their Business Development departments, at the completion of my studies,I will return back to Nigeria to work with my current company and This degree will help me to acquire managerial skills and leadership skills to push for a senior engineering and management position in the organization I work. I will also seek roles in other fmcg companies in Nigeria like Nestle Nigeria plc,Unilever,p&g, and PZ cussions when i return.

You have a guaranteed job in Dufil, yet you wanna push for roles in PZ cussions et al. I don't see consistency and purpose in your response here.
VO: Did you write a standardized test
Me: No, My admission was based on my past academic performance where i had 4.52 CGPA, and my years of professional leadership and career progression.So i Qualified for a gre waiver.

What if you simply respond with a NO. The other details where not asked for. Those could could land you into "trouble".

Vo: How many universities did you apply to?
Me: I applied to two universities - wright state university Dayton, Ohio And Southwest minnesota state university and I Got admitted to both.

Are you sure you applies to WSU...did they not require your test scores?

Vo: Why did you apply to these universities
Me: They are located located in smaller cities compared to bigger cities like Boston, New York, Chicago etc. I believe this will help me focus on my studies and achieve my goal of coming top of my mba class.

These reasons are anything but inspiring. You need to go look for curriculum specific reasons.


VO- So why Southwest minnesota state university?
ME- I had been in close contact with Dr Jeanette she
heard about what i have been able to achieve with my startup business here in Nigeria and she has agreed to offer me mentorship to in order to become a better business Man. Also Southwest Minnesota university is very affordable for a state university and considering the quality of education they offer.I also had discussions with current students and some alumni, and they provided great feedback on the structure of the program and internship opportunities available. This internship period will be very good for me to gain some international work experience.

These are not great reasons at all. I could pardon this from your if you were going for an undergraduate program. Again by curriculum specific here.

VO- Who is sponsoring?
ME- My Dad.

VO- What does he do?
ME- He sells and import cars and he is also into real estate investment.

Don’t make it look like people must drop their transcripts immediately after the interview.

Your visa is valid for 2yrs. You don't need to attend another interview. All you need to do is to get a new i20 for the session your are planning to resume. So inform your school about your decision.
