Nigeria, whose oil-dependent economy accounts for two-thirds of the region's GDP, would likely dominate a future monetary zone and has so far been sceptical about its benefits.

Economists compare the "Nigeria factor" to Germany's dominance in the eurozone, questioning whether sometimes disparate economies with varying levels of debt and deficits can successfully share the same currency.

The multi-year eurozone debt crisis, was proof that single currencies -- when badly implemented -- can have a catastrophic economic impact.

West African single currency should not necessarily be the top priority.

view on this : You should first improve the implementation of existing ECOWAS trading agreements, then improve the physical infrastructure,
The third more pressing issue would be the ability to trade in every country's native currency, without using a third currency like euro or dollars.

What's the implication for Nigeria?

The implicitcation is that other fellow west African countries are way lower than Nigeria and the top reason for single currency is to facilitate trade which unfortunately cant favour nigeria here since the others involved are economically weaker than Nigeria

I think it will benefit Nigeria the more because majority of its users would be Nigerians n most goods bought with it would be Nigerian goods or goods brought into the region by Nigerians.

My question is-- how or why did France allow this to happen?

A good one , Congratulations to them. But I have a little problem with the name ECO because it means “Economic Community Of”. Which is meaningless. If they called it “ECOW” at least the w could stand for WestAfrica.

By the way, did I see OBJ in that picture?

Euro is not used in the whole of Europe

Euro isn't used in the whole of Europe, cos some nations don't want to use it, much the same way Nigeria and Ghana can decide they don't want to adopt Eco. Euro is not limited to any region of Europe.

ECOWAS is a regional body in Africa. It concerns only West Africa. European Union is not a regional European body.

If the common currency of West African nations bears Afro, what will happen when North, Central, East and Southern African nations decide to have their common currencies. Which names would they call them?
Re: ECOWAS Adopts ECO As A Single Currency by OkpaNsukkaisBae(m): 8:34pm On Jul 02, 2019
I know very little about economics but make no mistake.. This is all about the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. With the largest market in Africa, Naija cannot come and allow South Africa dominate them. Let's secure our region first, then go and face them @ d continental trade

Ok. So what happens to the naira

The Naira would be replaced by ECO. Just as Germany replaced Deutsche Mark with Euro.
