A wide applause greeted the 3rd Day of Bayero University’s 35th Convocation Ceremony, on Thursday, 13th June, 2019, when the Registrar, Fatima Binta Isyaku Mohammed announced that out of thirteen first class graduands in the Faculty of Life Sciences, nine were females.

The Senate members, academics and administrative staff; graduands, parents and other members of the public who were present clapped with joy, ecstasy and appreciation, having seen it as a positive step taken by females to be at par with their male counterparts.

Even among the first class graduands from the faculty, Latifat Abdulsalam emerged as the overall best with 4.92 CGPA to top Sadam Abubakar, 4.88; Amina Salim Habib, 4.72; Rukayya Sa’ad Adam, 4.67; Emmanuel David Abu, 4.64; Rahila Nkieru Hashim, 4.60; Bilkisu Ahmad, 4.60; Mubina Hanga Magaji, 4.60; Ahmad Sadi Shitu, 4.54; Safiya Aliyu, 4.53; Raula Isa Bello, 4.52; Umar Adamu Hamza, 4.52 and Hafsat Muhammad Sule with 4.51.

When BUK Bulletin asked the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Ibrahim Lawan on the performance of female graduands, he said there was a high level of competition among the students and it helped them a lot to perform better.

Dr. Lawan pointed out that it was a remarkable achievement that the faculty would be proud of, noting that they really demonstrated capacity to do better. “We have seen what the graduands of this Convocation did. We hope females will continue in this direction so that the gap between them and their male counterparts will be significantly narrowed,” said the Dean.

The Dean added that the entire 13 first class graduands benefited hugely from the facilities installed by the University Management that provided enabling environment for learning and research.

The ceremony witnessed the graduation of 2,039 graduands from 7 faculties: Communication, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Management Sciences and Physical Sciences. Out of this number, 54 graduated with First Class Degree; 602, Upper Second Class; 932, Lower Second Class; 404, 3rd Class and 47 with Pass.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, congratulated the graduands and urged them to be good ambassadors of Bayero University, Kano, whereever they find themselves in future. “Whereever you find yourself, act with humility and decency, and be considerate and accommodative of others,” the Vice Chancellor said.
