From all indications, these african americans are looking for a cultural identity but are very likely and not in any way of edo ancestry. They may choose to identify with edo culture but their DNA ancestry definitely belongs somewhere else.
You ignored my question. Why

it could be that you are a slowpoke, like the other guy ? Which one is "bini, Edo state". I know Benin city, Benin Kingdom, Benin Republic, but "bini" I don't know.

You are the slow poke! Go read your history properly and see how the so-called “Benin Kingdom” was referred to before the coming of the missionaries.

Dude has never heard of “Bini” before and you are here making noise about DNA this, DNA that?

The issue is when Pan Africanist Black Americans come to Africa for tracing their lineage/culture/knowing their ancestral origin, they get disappointed how the blacks in Africa don't care about Pan Africanism and the suffering their ancestors went through.

An example is a young Michelle Obama on her trip to Kenya in the early 90s who famously told Obama that, I can't wait to go back home (America) because everything was exciting at first but over time, the harsh reality of Africa is different from the plight of the American blacks.

You again. No African American is 100% anything. And that is a FACT.
Aside this thread i have never thought about their roots

But i believe this your facts is almost true because over the years they mixed up. Various blacks from different african tribes and even some slaves that born children for their white masters.

Its quite sad being an african american. No wonder many still have victim mentality. Its really not their fault to some extent.

If i were an african american i will try as much as possible to just forget the roots because some times is if no use

"Missionaries" ... I like how uneducated Nigerians often feel themselves superior. Dude, first of all, the first literate people to come to Benin Kingdom were not missionaries, they were either merchants either explorers. Second of all, what you are calling "history" is actually a mere invented story since it is not quoted from a text written by an eye witness.

The first name ever written for Benin Kingdom was "Benin Kingdom" in Portuguese.

What is wrong with you guys ? You are very uneducated and arrogant. You guys are dumb.

How I Thank God that I studied in France and not Nigeria. Your reasoning faculties are very poor.
Read my words, and read well. I am actually not endorsing your claim nor it's contrary. I am only telling you that you are not reasoning well and that you are confusing assumptions with facts. Benin Kingdom was a large empire with a lot of internal migration and movements like in all countries. Benin city was its capital. That tells you that the people living in Benin city are probably linked through blood to those in the provinces. Because the capital of every country seem to attract people from near and far in the country. Anyway, I am done with having to give free lesson to almost every person I have met on nairaland. Speculation is cheap. All that we know is what the article tells us: they traced their ancestry to Benin Kingdom. No need to make assumptions and confuse your assumptions with facts. People were not abducted in Benin city. Yes but what about their relatives in far away corners of the empire ? Corners which are now being called either Yorubaland, igboland or whateverland ? It just seems rather Unnecessary to speculate on this matter.

You studied in Paris yet you have never heard of ‘bini’ grin grin grin

Not a single person there is full-fledged anything. I can guarantee you that if they take DNA tests, the results will point to all over West Africa and Central Africa (with a heavy dose of Nigerian for some of them).

Also almost everyone of them will have some European ancestry as well. That light-skinned woman in blue looks like someone whose DNA result will say 30% European.

Not true about the light skin.
You talk as if there are no light skin people in Nigeria,
There are some Igbo Nigerians that made there ancestry test and they are 100% African even though they are looking like the Europeans by skin.

Light skin colour has difference.
I have sat face to face and touched a South African light skinned person. That lightness does not resemble Igbo lightness at all.
This black American lightness has European mix in it. If you are in a room with them overseas, you will never feel at home.

lol...you must understand that until recently, many black Americans enjoyed living in denial of their true roots.

Now You See them dress up in Dashikis, believing that is all the passport they need to claim their "long lost" heritage.

Tis a lot more complex than that.
One of the benefits of the modern era is social media especially youtube that, enables people to get information from various sources and not just from the TV and radio stations only.

Honestly you cant blame them. They had been told that their own people rejected them an sold them into slavery. And did not bother to come look for them for all these centuries.

Moreso the images of Africa they see on TV is of suffering, mud houses, malnourishment and corruption. No one will want to associate with that especially when they see it as just punishment for the evil that we did to them.

With social media and the Wakanda movie, where Africa was potrayed in a positive light, a longing for home has stirred up in the african american.

If not that most of our governments are clueless, now is the time to establish African cultural centers in the United states where african languages and certain cultural stuff can be taught to and learned by African Americans. Igbo, Yoruba, Ghanian languages. Marriage, naming and burial ceremonies and how to cook certain foods....and not masquerade stuff.

Not entirely correct. Oba of Benin forbade sale of Benin people by anyone and Benin people selling anyone.

Around 200 years before Britain banned slavery in 1807. Infact a French slave trader confirmed in in his writing in the 1700s. That of the 100 slaves on sale en route Port of Gwatto (Ughoton), there was no single Benin slave or Benin trader. He mentioned there were Igbo, Yoruba and others.

Other tribes in fringes of Benin Empire resisted ban of slave trade in their areas of the empire. So such an agreement was reached. Oba was head of state and therefore a politian. Leaders have to make unpalatable compromises for peace to reign.

People claim Benin supported slavery because he supported Oba Kosoko of Lagos, who supported slavery. Kosoko was loyal to Benin. Lagos had own autonomy already from Benin already at this point.

My hunch is that, just like narcotics today, some people would have probably illegally engaged in it. But upon pain of death. Just like people still traffic narcotics to Middle East and Asia now despite risk of being hung if caught.
Banning of slavery made sense because Benin needed people to maintain a large army. You do not achieve that by selling people.

Benin City has existed longer than Benin Republic as an established name. It used to be Dahomey.

For foreigners, visiting a famed kingdom is far more interesting. Closest in attire to pharaohs of Egypt if you look carefully.

Remember too that most would have done DNA test by now. It's fairly cheap in USA with a cheek/mouth swab sent by post.

Fifty African American tourists, who are in Benin City, Edo State capital, to trace their origin, have visited the Palace of the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

While welcoming the tourists, Oba Ewuare II commended them for making effort to trace their roots back home and thanked the ancestors for protecting African Americans in their sojourn.

The revered monarch tasked the tourists to support efforts against modern human slavery and join the fight against human trafficking in the state.

The Oba of Benin added that the African Americans have done well in their choice to come down to Benin and deserve to be applauded, noting that the Palace is proud of them.

Oba Ewuare II added that his Foundation was established to drive the integration of victims of illegal migration, who have returned back to Nigeria.

The Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Osaze Osemwegie-Ero who accompanied the tourists on the courtesy visit to the Palace, expressed appreciation to the Benin Monarch for supporting the drive to grow the tourism sector of the state.

Mrs. Betty Arnold, who led the tourists, said they are honoured to be at the Palace, noting that some of them were visiting Africa for the first time.

The tourists were later hosted to a dinner at Edo State Government House, where the Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs, assured that the state was safe for investors.
