Professor Ben Nwabueze, erudite constitutional lawyer, consummate and well-researched elder statesman drafted the unitary constitution thus abolishing the robust regional setup that made each region economically and politically viable. He abolished the regional governance because of General Aguiyi Ironsi who had just seized power after the gruesome murders of the prime minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and others in 1966.


To ensure his grips on power, Ironsi used Nwabueze’s unitary document to bring Nigeria under one federating unit. It is intriguing that the same person whose document ended our regional experience is the same person crying for restructuring. What has happened that his beautiful policy is no longer an option but an oppressive tool? For us to take him serious, he must first apologise to Nigerians for abolishing the regional template.

Has Buhari ever openly condemned the killings done by the Fulanis up north? Did he apologise for not submitting his SSCE result when asked? Did he openly apologise for those killing done in the North by his supporters when he lost the presidential elections back in the day? Did you insist he apologises to prove he stands for 1 Nigeria before taking his ellectorial dream seriously?
Why do you people practice selective justice? You will not take something serious until he apologises? Is it his apology you need or the wisdom/non wisdom in what he says that you should first focus on? If I say your house is on fire.... Will you ask me to apologise for offending you in the past before you exit the burning building?

why do you guys like revising histroy for goodness sake.
the reason why the unitary system was adopted then was because of political exigency. after the Nzeogwu coup(which Ironsi was not part of),the north threatened to secede,infact they have already concluded the plans of secession but were prevailed upon by the British and some southern leaders to shelve the idea but that still did not douse the tension.in a desperate bid to keep the country one and united(hence the term unitary)the regions were abolished and the country united under one federation and that is what gave rise to the unitary constitution.
recall that a year later when there was a pogrom against the igbos and the igbos decided to secede,the FG went to war to keep Nigeria one.
so how do you hail the FG for going to war to keep the country one and turn around to blame a man who achieved the same thing but this time not through the force of arms.
and now you want a system that is not working to continue so that you can gloat and revel in self delusion.
do you know how many constitutional reviews and amendments that the advanced countries have to go through before they start getting things right.
