Good development and good move Mr president.

Free trade agreements are designed to cut trade tariffs between member countries.

Tariffs are a form of tax, like a border tax.

They are placed on goods coming into a country for a range of reasons, sometimes to try and protect a home-made product.

The purest free trade agreement (FTA) removes all border taxes or trade barriers on goods.

They get rid of quotas too, so there is no limit to the amount of trade you can do.

FTAs also help make a country's exports cheaper and give easier entry to other markets.

They come in all sorts of forms and with different rules but in short, they make trade between countries as liberal as possible and allow for more rules-based competition.

Kudos to Presido. Make them open borders sharp sharp.

Flow of goods within member countries, how are you going to ensure that the goods flowing were actually manufactured in the originating country? We just shot ourselves in the foot! Goods will be moved from Europe and across the world into our neighboring countries and then by virtue of free trade agreement, gain passage into our country.

This is a calamity in the making. Ordinary smuggling and the likes of dangote are whining. Now we have legalized movement of goods into our country from supposedly African countries.
oga wait... Even International analyst are commending the move... Many world regions do have FTA.... Wait before you criticize, let's see how it goes

why wont international analyst praise the move, they ve seen a market that they can easily dump their goods without any pakam, free market and trade have never benefitted nigeria right from the time of the structural adjustment program to the time of Washington and post Washington consensus and to this Afcta trash

Thank you.

Today, my girlfriend who loves to go romaging for bargain in Sunday market in Shoreditch for her online business, returned with a bag full of wellmade slippers, about twenty of them, for £1. One frigging pound. And also she returned with jarkets and skirts, all really well made stuff, all ranging in price from £1 to £3s. These stuff were made in Greece, Albania, and so on. People in London generally will not touch them. This stuff full market., few buy. The new single African market will be the ideal place to dump them. This in addition to Asian cheap items.

So, what market abroad does Nigeria hope to trade and sell with? At best Nigerian manufactured stuff will be trapped to Africa. Africa that want to sell to Nigeria because they don't have buying power.

Hope for earning foreign currency lays only in agricultural stuff and our own unique ethnic Nigerian brands. And for that, we don't need Africa, in any case.

I agree with you on smuggling and its one of the major disadvantage of FTAs, but at the same time the exporting strength of indigenous companies will grow which will benefit individual countries.
There is no perfect system because there will be pros and cons

The deal will not add to our export value; what we export is mostly crude and agric products which hardly lacks market as crude is regulated by OPEC and Agric products will always find a market. Our indegenous market is hardly striving, much more when competition with foreign goods becomes rife.

I'm afraid economics wasn't the motivating factor for signing up, I suspect Nigeria leadership is eyeing the sociopolitical benefits, whatever they believe it ( in terms of shaking up the ethnic dynamics) to be accrued in the next phases of the Union, which is free movement of people.

Oga, exclusion of border taxes should not be seen as an advantage at all. Border tax, in the form of ETLS is as little as 0.5% - 1.5% of FOB charges. It's like a waiver to hell! I don't think you understand fully the implications of this agreement.

I belive wah he is saying in a nutshell is that there is no need removing or putting tariff as the other guy above argued caused the tariff is as low as not even being in existence. so exclusion of tariff doesnt really count
