spacyzuma: It's vehicle 1st, then insurance next.............. I have always mentioned the joys of the Toyota Aygo...... If you want cheaper insurance, buy an Aygo type vehicle (under 1L engine displacement)............... 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Lexusgs430: Ahhahaaha my chairman no be like that. A Kia picanto 1.0l, 1.2l manual engine can't be compared to a 1.23l auto engine (my car). And am been honest when I say it drives like a 1.4l car with good fuel consumption. A very good comparison is with the Toyota Yaris 1.3l 2008-2013, maybe not as refined as the Yaris but it feels like one. |

Divine88: Lexusgs430: Lexusgs430: Thanks. But I'm curious about this situation. It is illegal to own/drive a car without insurance. After buying the car, isn't it a crime to drive it home without insurance? ALso, how long do you wait until you buy the insurance? is there an allowable grace period before buying insurance? |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Lexusgs430: 10:37am On Jul 09, 2019 |
spacyzuma: No grace period.... Not even 1 second......... The moment you drive a car on a public road, it MUST be insured, taxed and MOT'ed (if required).......... 2 Likes |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Lexusgs430: 10:40am On Jul 09, 2019 |
spacyzuma: You can own a car and not insure, so long as it's not on a public road...... If vehicle is untaxed while on a public road, DVLA too would clamp it...... You would pay almost £200 to remove clamp, and before you pay, you must buy a road tax, to buy road tax, you require insurance......... And the sequence continues........ 3 Likes |

spacyzuma: Let's assume you drive vehicle home, don't forget traffic policing is done mostly using ANPR cameras...... If you get stopped, the vehicle would be immediately seized, you would have a very good day in a proper court...... You would be banned and heavily fined + points added to you license..... 1 Like |

Lexusgs430:Civic of cos. But if u need a low fuel consumption car and a reasonable range car for a family of 3-4, nothing beats Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, VW Up, Seat Mii & Skoda Citigo. Cheap to maintain and low insurance. Abeg Toyota Aygo should not been mentioned here ooo. Aygo should be a no no. So for a lot of first time drivers/buyers like majority of us in this country, get something that will give u peace of mind. You don't need to be a petrol head, start small, get something that is value for money and just seat back. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Lexusgs430: Lexusgs430: Lexusgs430: Ok, so what is the proper and COMPLETE procedure to buying a car, paying the tax, buying insurance, etc...before driving it home? |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Lexusgs430: 11:01am On Jul 09, 2019 |
spacyzuma: Before you buy a car, get an insurance quote to confirm affordability..... Once 100% certain you are buying the vehicle (after test drive), you can insure vehicle on the spot (hopefully the insurance company can upload insurance data to MID database immediately), without insurance on MID, you cannot buy Tax + MOT must be valid)....... 5 Likes 4 Shares |

spacyzuma: Be mindful, some car sellers/dealers would not allow you test drive their vehicle without your insurance....... They would drive, while you sit in the passenger's section...... NB : So you could either take out daily insurance (if unsure) or fully insure (take ur chances) and cancel if deal falls through....... 2 Likes |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Divine88: 11:05am On Jul 09, 2019 |
spacyzuma: 1. Search for your desired car, agree with the dealer ( make sure the package includes new MOT, new service and other orisiri is included as agreed). 2. After u've arranged payment. Start looking for insurance and that can start when u want to go pick up the car. E.g if u want to pick up your car 2 weeks after u've paid, u can arrange for your insurance to start by then. 3. Some dealers do offer 1 week insurance or 3 days insurance tho. Am not too sure, but u can ask. 4. Road tax can be paid on the day u are picking up the vehicle either pay by full or by DD. Important to know how much your vehicle specifications will be for the tax e.g My Kia auto is £140 /year. I hope I helped a lil bit. Oga Lexus Sabi all these wella pass me 11 Likes 5 Shares |

Lexusgs430: Divine88: Thanks, bosses. In my mind, I envisioned payin for the car, signing documents and immediately driving away with it. I didn't realise paying for it and picking it up days later. But your advice is relevant if I'm buying from a car dealership. What are the differences if I'm buying from a car auction or from gumtree? |
Re: Living In The Uk/life As A UK Immigrant by Lexusgs430: 11:50am On Jul 09, 2019 |
spacyzuma: You can drive away same day, but must still be insured, taxed and mot'ed........ With Auction, you cannot test drive........ You might be lucky to buy a diamond or unluckily buy a lemon..... With gumtree, you can test drive and view properly... (still subject to you having insurance to test drive)..... 2 Likes |

Divine88: This is your best bet if you just want the car home whilst you keep looking for insurance or waiting to pass your test- get a qualified driver o Heard some insurance company even do by hour. So you can insure it for 8 hours. It will show up on askmid if u do it in advance- voila you can peeping at your new car until you get sorted 2 Likes 2 Shares |

DaveChapelle: Bragging about savings, discounts, offers is a national past time in UK. In naija you see a jjc driver looking for v8 engine even though he'll never get on to do any proper driving due to 'go-slow' everywhere |

Lexusgs430: True talk my brother. Just commonsense. It is not only about saving but common sense. A lot of folks here go for all these massive cars on PCP ooo not outright ownership despite working in mediocre jobs just to feel among. Why not cut your coat according to size. Save reasonably and get yourself a car that will serve you and your family well. Na wetin dey kill us for 9ja be this, showing off cars forgetting cars have massive depreciation and driving small cars with big efficient engines are the best ways to enjoy yourself in this country 6 Likes |
