Samuel Chukwueze gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the break, latching onto his own rebound to slot past the goalkeeper. However, Bafana Bafana levelled in the second half, thanks to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision. With the match looking to head into extra time, William Troost-Ekong forced the ball over the line in the final minute of play. Its official Nigeria is in semi finals Waiting for algeria or ![]() It’s Nigeria vs Riyad Mahrez again! Super Eagles get Algeria in AFCON semi-final Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Algeria will renew their rivalry at the African Nations Cup this weekend in the semi-final of the competition. Algeria, who defeated Ivory Coast 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 result through regulation and extra-time, are hoping to win only their second AFCON title and Djamel Belmadi’s men are pole position favorites. But, after initial underwhelming performances, the Super Eagles have also found their rhythm in the competition following wins over Cameroon and South Africa, the latter are defending champions. There have been 8 previous meetings between the two teams in the history of competition and Nigeria have won more games (4 wins, 1 draw, 3 loses). In recent meetings; as recent as the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria defeated Algeria, at the time Africa’s highest ranked team in the world. A comfortable 3-1 victory in Uyo was followed by a 1-1 result in Algiers, however, the latter was awarded to Algeria after it emerged Nigeria fielded a suspended player. This semi-final match-up will see the continued use of VAR, in spite of the controversies surrounding decisions in the short while since its introduction in the competition. Cairo International stadium will once again play host to the Super Eagles and this time it’ll be for a spot in the final of the 32nd edition of the competition. 4 Likes |

This Algerians play with flair and strength (which is a BIG surprise). I watched them against Senegal and also CIV. They were very, very aggressive and still played sensible football. Our attackers and midfielders should come prepared for a battle. Please can someone tell Genot Rorh to stop the Akpeyi experiment now? He is going to be tested a lot in this game. And we might not like the outcome. I Wish the Eagles the best, though. 93 Likes 12 Shares |

Nigeria vs South Africa: Super Eagles qualify for AFCON semi-finals head in the first half in front of a healthy, largely pro-Nigerian crowd at the 75,000-capacity Cairo International Stadium. But Bongani Zungu’s looping header brought South Africa level on 70 minutes, the goal awarded with the aid of VAR — introduced for the first time at the tournament from the quarter-final stage onwards — after it was initially ruled out for offside. Centre-back Troost-Ekong then turned home at a corner a minute from time to set three-time champions Nigeria up with a clash against Algeria or Ivory Coast for a spot in the July 19 final. Left-back Jamilu Collins made his first appearance in Egypt after shaking off a pre-tournament injury while Villarreal forward Chukwueze came in for Moses Simon in the Nigerian attack. Stuart Baxter stuck with the same side that shocked hosts Egypt in the last round, as match-winner Thembinkosi Lorch retained his place despite Themba Zwane’s return from suspension. Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr had suggested South Africa were favourites in the build-up following their defeat of the record seven-time champions, a tag Baxter promptly rejected with Bafana Bafana’s lone competitive win coming in qualifying for these finals. Odion Ighalo’s goals have been the driving force behind Nigeria’s run here but it was emerging young forward Chukwueze, coming off a solid debut season in Spain’s top flight, who struck just before the half-hour to end the impasse. Alex Iwobi skipped past a couple of defenders down the left before pulling back for Chukwueze, who swept into the corner as the ball trickled back his way after a first shot was blocked. Following a stodgy first half Nigeria appeared the far sharper after the break, Peter Etebo rattling the crossbar with a superb 25-yard- free-kick destined for the top corner but for the fingertips of Ronwen Williams. A number of promising attacks fizzled out for Nigeria and their lack of precision came back to haunt them when Zungu hauled South Africa level, nodding back across goal after a Percy Tau set-piece was shown upon a video review to have been flicked on by Ighalo. But after their stunning elimination of Mohamed Salah’s Egypt there was to be no follow-up act from South Africa as Williams flapped at an inswinging corner and Troost-Ekong forced over the line to clinch victory for Nigeria. punchng.com © 1971-2019 The Punch newspaper - 1 Like |

Nigeria has played in more semi finals than most afrcan nation Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations record 1963–1978 Nigeria first appeared in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1963, when they were drawn in a group with Sudan, and the then United Arab Republic. They did not advance to the next stage. The team withdrew from two African Cup of Nations between 1963 and 1974, due to political instability. In 1976, they came back to the Cup of Nations with third-place finishes in both the 1976 and 1978 Africa cup of Nations 1980–1990 Nigeria hosted the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and also won their first Cup of Nations Title that year in Lagos. Nigeria came out as runners-up three times and had one group stage elimination, between 1982 and 1990. They also failed to qualify for the 1986 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Egypt. 1992–2006 Nigeria appeared again in the African cup of Nations in 1992 and 1994, they finished third in 1992 and won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, which was the second time they won the tournament. In 1996 the team withdrew from the tournament due to the political tensions in the country as at that time, they were also banned from entering the 1998 African Cup of Nations. In 2000 they returned to the Cup of Nations and were the runner-up. They later finished in third place at the 2002, 2004 and 2006 Africa Cup of Nations. 2008–2017 In the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria ended their campaign in the quarter finals after losing to Ghana. They qualified for 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Angola, but were eliminated by Ghana in the semi-finals. They failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations after ending the qualifiers with a 2–2 draw against Guinea with goals from Ikechukwu Uche and Victor Obinna. Nigeria came back in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in South Africa; after playing through the tournament with an unbeaten run, they defeated Burkina Faso in the finals to lift the Cup for the third time. However, they did not qualify for either of the next two tournaments. In 2019 we are again in the semi finals looking to make it to the finals and win her 4th title 29 Likes |

We will win 1-0. Iwobi will score our only goal. An Algerian player will get a red card. I'm not a psychic I just have a Time travel machine that lets me see future events before everyone else. 50 Likes |

We go scatter their play with jaga jaga and end up winning as usual. ![]() Our players are capable of burying them but it all depends on the coach and his tatics, he needs to use the right players. Let's not also forget that a whole senegal lost to them in the group stage.. The same senegal we couldn't win. 9 Likes |

Algerians have a subtle and sharp attack with a good goal keeper. I see this as a tough one but Super Eagles may still come out victorious. I believe whoever wins in this match will lift the trophy . 14 Likes |
