There is a guy on YouTube, DZ football an English guy of Algerian descent who follows the premier league

He was previewing the match between Algeria and Nigeria....he praised bounedjah belaili bennacer ounas mahrez guediora as well as the whole team to high heavens

When it came to Nigeria, all he said was that he was expecting a tough match. he said he likes chukwueze...then went forward to name Mikel iwobi and ndidi as their key men....

He concluded by saying eagles lost to Madagascar and have not been stellar in this tournament...he mentioned the fact that we didn't qualify for the past two editions...that he was expecting a tough but controlled win...and that eagles wouldn't cause much problems to them

As a Nigerian watching his video, I was surprised he didn't truly know what we are capable of....but he is only going by off hand knowledge of Nigerian players because he doesn't know them of course, since he isn't a nigerian, he is not obliged to know all of them either

I'm saying this to apply this logic to some of us who think Algerians don't have players and that we can walk over them like paper, just because we don't know them or we haven't heard of them. This guy will be surprised as to what Nigerians will do....as will the rest of africa

The league itself and the clubs players play for in these 'elyte' leagues (no pun intended).....go a long way in deciding popularity....once a country who has them is facing a country who doesn't.....the latter will be seen as underdogs while the former will be seen as favourites...because they have more popular players

It may make people to likely assume that Eric Bailly or sol bamba is better than cheick komara or kanon, just because the former two play for man u and Cardiff respectively

Lol...you get the point...their leagues are popular and people from all over the world play in them. Assuming all our nigerian players were regular starters in these clubs in top popular leagues, boutabout will be going to toilet every 60 secs

But he has looked at our team and he is saying there aren't much big name players and so he is confident Algeria will defeat them....he doesn't realise his own players aren't well known like that...but because say na afcon we dey...person gast raise shoulder

That's how most people...sometimes even you and I....use as a yardstick in determining whether a team will come out victorious over another

It is not easy to get job abroad. U have to have a name for yourself before they turn down their own coaches for u. Manu Garba has won the same U17 World Cup as Amunike but Ema is a household name in Africa.

Algeria's (Mahrez, Man City)

Mahrez is bigger in global football.

Other notable names from Algeria: Feghouli, Brahimi, Slimani

Other notable names from Nigeria: Mikel, Ndidi, Musa

Like every match day, I have a word.. My fellow eagle's supporters, we are not cowards, so let's be confident in our team, and if things doesn't go our way, so be it... Till next time.. But this attitude of being too scared to support the team, because they might loose, is cowardice...

It was during the world cup, I got to know many polish players.

Most people all over the world dont know players from other Nations unless they are their regular opponents or club players. Infact, in the Epl, outside the top 6, u can hardly tell a player's country without using Google, unless u are already conversant with names as they relate to countries, the popular/unique ones. So it isnt just an African thing, it is global stuff though we can argue that the more prominent ones like Spain, Germany, Dutch, Portugal etc are kinda exceptions.

I Am not talking about club here.
I am simply referring to the "that guy" moment. What's the that guy moment?? Hypothetically this would be watching a football game anywhere and u see a particular player handle the ball or say display some attributes beyond those who he is up against. At this moment your curiosity is piqued to know more about the player, and it starts with the name. You are like What's his name or what number does he wear.

Certainly, with Chelsea winning a European cup and Nigeria winning the Nation's cup. Mikel gave himself a drive to be in the top 3. (p.s I now recall how pained I was that yaya toure whose team could only get to the quarter finals could emerge african player of the year.) but then, you cannot take away the "that guy" moment from toure. My point is it's the same with brahimi with Porto. Mikel had it too, obviously why he came second. But then not consistent enough for any average fan to always want to pick his name up in their memories forever. More-or-less the reasons why the ex Algerian player could not easily mention his name.
