National President, Polymer Institute of Nigeria, Prof. Paul Mamza, has appealed to the Federal Government to drop the proposal for the ban on plastic bags and materials in the country.

Polymer Institute of Nigeria is an umbrella for all Polymer scientists, engineers, technologists and industrialist in Nigeria.

Recently, an environmental law prohibiting the use and manufacture of plastic bags in Nigeria passed through First Reading in the House of Representatives.

Regardless, Professor Mamza told newsmen that instead of banning plastic materials, Nigeria should be integrated into the technological world where Plastic wastes are used as a veritable recovery rather than the ban.

He said: “Recently, the House of Representatives passed an Environmental law prohibiting the use and manufacture of plastic bags in Nigeria through first reading, but, I want to say that there is no alternative to plastics yet.

“Plastics have replaced traditional materials, due to its higher technical advantage and low cost. Most superior materials that run automobiles, household items and initially, all materials in commercial uses, are made from plastics.

“In some countries like Singapore, polymeric wastes were utilised in the generation of electricity.

“The Government of Nigeria, rather than ban the use of plastic bags, should engage polymer professionals in finding ways of environmentally friendly disposal of plastics by novelty of waste to wealth.

“Nigeria must be integrated into the technological world where plastic wastes are used as veritable recovery rather than simple ban.

“Modern technologies also offer viabilities of biodegradable and photodegradable polymers. The built–in disposability of plastics, through the use of microorganisms or photosensitive groupings, are areas of current research and development that Nigeria should key into, not outright ban on plastic bags.

“All levels of government in Nigeria should invest in science and technology, especially polymer science and technology, which is a springboard for economic prosperity.”

Nylon has been banned in Rwanda. That’s a futuristic country. Why can’t it be banned it NIGERIA?

There are countries making bags out of processed cassava; a produce we have in abundance. Even Adidas has started making biodegradable running shoes because they give a hoot about their environment.

Why can’t we imitate that technology since that’s what we’re good at; imitations. You see nylon/plastic bags littering the whole place without any hope of them being recycled nor put to good use.

Nylon/Plastic causes more harm than good to the environment generally. Have you seen Lil Dicky’s new Video about the whole environmental disaster that’s headed our way? This isht is real o.

Ok. I think the presidency should weigh up available option(s) before they finally take the decision to ban the plastic bags.

Prof Mamza is living in the past. We have many alternative biodegradable materials that can take the place of plastics. Plastic should only be allowed for industrial applications or for the storage of liquids. Retail use of plastics should be banned totally.

The main culprits are sachet water and plastic cans. In as much as i commend the intentions of the bill i think its targeted at the wrong culprits.

What the government should be doing is looking at recycling ideas. Only two percent for the world's plastic waste gets recylced, even developed countries are still battling with waste management.

I'm in support... plastic bags, bottles, cans etc are responsible for a lot of environmental disasters. Nigerians naturally are dirty people who throw their empties anywhere after consumption.

There are paper cups, bottles, cans and bags being used in advance country... we should adopt that.

Next should be pampers, sanitary pads and torn females pants. They're responsible for most flood in Nigeria.

Visit some places in Lagos and you'll definitely support this.

It’s causing more harm than good.
And what would be its alternative ? Before banning anything there should be an alternative on ground to replace it. How would the likes of pure water be sold, seeing that many people use pure water as their source of lively hood and many people drink pure water .

Ban it. It's littering everywhere causing floods

Also all plastic bottling companies should be charged with massive distribution of dustbins round the country. For people to dump their plastic bottles.

The floodings has become severe

Spot on dear. polymer product is the cheapest and safest for the market. What Government needs to do is give an upper hand to NGOs so that that they can sensitize the populace on how to use and recycled plastic materials from there, they can make money too.

many things to be banned in this country
many many things

i support the ban.

plastic bags are not biodegradable and they do lots of damage to our drainage systems.
As for those screaming RECYCLING, how many plastic bags make it to the recycler in a month compared to what is produced.? they end up in the garbage can and dump site.

I was expecting the Polymer Institute president to talk about all his ideas and proposals the institute had submitted to the federal government concerning the control and utilization of polymer waste since the institute began. Instead, he's saying GOVERNMENT SHOULD FIND A WAY.

Is the institution not part of the government.?
