It takes time to differentiate languages one is not familiar with. And in the presence of danger, survival instinct kicks in. Meaning a person's first thought is escape and not who is doing what. I have seen people get seriously injured and not know it at the time because they are frightened and trying to escape the situation. So sometimes even eye witness account might not be entirely accurate
