Yes. Several factors are required BEFORE deploying the parachute. Jump too soon or too late and its death.

You need a minimum height for the 'chute to fully deploy and catch air to slow you down. As the plane crashed shortly after takeoff...

The plane was falling faster than anybody could survive. Imagine someone falling from 5th floor... velocity by the time they hit the ground would kill them. No matter how you jump "at the last moment", it won't really change your downward speed.

Are you talking about a plane that was probably spinning while crashing down to the ground with speed? You can't jump off a plane when it is approaching the ground while crashing.

So if you're in a car moving at 50km/hr then you are also moving at 50km/hr. A funny thing is that, if you start moving inside the vehicle, depending on your direction, you can either be slightly faster or slower than the vehicle.

Back to the topic, at the point when the plane is about to crash they all had the same speed as the plane. If any of them had dropped off at that point they would have impacted the ground just like the falling plane.

The GippsAero GA8 Airvan is a single-engine plane measuring almost nine metres from nose to tail.

It was made in Australia, by a company part of the Mahindra Group.

Excellent question. The answer for now it is not possible because of too many reasons.

1. It will be expensive.

2. You will need to have a quick way of opening the roof of the plane so people can eject out. You know this is not an easy task.

3. Training. There will have to be a compulsory training on how to use a parachute and how to eject safely.

4. There is a chance of parachutes getting entangled. Many people, small space = high chance of entangled parachutes.

5. If you read more about ejecting from a plane you will see that it is not inherently safe. You may survive but the chances of breaking a few limbs or getting paralyzed is high. Except if the plane is going to blow then you might take your chances but nonetheless, it is better to stay on the plane and receive protection from its frame.
