Truidstar: No now, ighalo should start to have a chance at the golden boot. In 1992, Yekini played the 3rd place final and he used it to win the golden boot against Cameroon. And dear Alloy Agu used d game to give himself a bad name. I think we should do a 3-5-2 with ighalo and onyekuru in the attack. Simon mosis or Aina and kalu should operate as wing backs. With awaziem, Balogun and Ekong in the defence. the slow coaches Mikel and Ogu in the midfield completed by free kick donor, ndidi. Uzoho to be in goal. 1 Like |

AFCON: Don’t Put Eagles’ Loss to Algeria on Me, says Akpeyi The blame games have not ceased since the Sunday’s defeat to Algeria, and the Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi who is at the centre of it has absolved himself and his teammates of any blame to contrary views. The Super Eagles will meet Tunisia on Wednesday for a chance to go home with a consolation prize after the three-time African Champions lost 2-1 to the Dessert of Algeria in the Nations Cup semi-final tie in Cairo on Sunday night. The loss left a broken heart on the national team players with some Nigerian fans pointing at the goalkeeper’s ‘poor’ performance and left a few suggesting that a better goaltender would have stopped Mahrez’s free kick. Nigeria were dominated by a sleek-passing, sweet-attacking Algerian side and ultimately lost to a stunning Riyadh Mahrez free kick with extra time looming. Odion Ighalo had earlier gotten the West Africans on level terms after trailing to a Troost-Ekong own goal since the first half. Read Also: Owolabi to Nigerians: Encourage Super Eagles, not rebuke them “It’s very tough and very sad that we have to lose in that manner, to have conceded through that kind of free-kick,” said Akpeyi who explained that “hard luck played its part in the Super Eagles Sunday night defeat to Algeria.” “I wish there can be a replay, but it’s over now and we have to look up to the third-place game,” the 32-year old goalkeeper said as he would rather focus on the future away from the loss. “So far, it doesn’t matter whatever anyone would say about the team. These players have actually tried. A lot of teams have been knocked out of this competition but we are still here.” “We have very young talent and I’m very sure if this team can be given a chance, we’ll be able to fix things,” Akpeyi concluded. Meanwhile, Williams Troos Ekong has sent out a ‘Thank you’ message to Nigerian for showing support for the national team seine the group stage of this year’s biennial competition which started in June. ‘Thank you for all your support,” the Eagles centre back posted online as he called for a continued support till the Eagles last match against Tunisia. “Let’s push one more time Wednesday!” he added on his tweeter handle. The Super Eagles has won each of their six third-place games in Nations Cup, while keeping a clean sheet in four of these ties. |

AIG07:The only positive in Rohr's work is that he's laid a good foundation for a more intelligent coach to complement and build on, and he deserves some credit for that. But as a matter of truth, Rohr is not more than an average coach and that's just it. The players and their talents are there but unfortunately, he has little knowledge on how to utilize them to their utmost potentials. Gernot Rohr has really tried but there are surely a handful of better tacticians out there that the NFF can lay Their hands on. 1 Like |

I find it rather funny that some people want to use our lack of creative midfielders as an excuse for Rohr... Is Rohr not the one in charge of the team? Didn't he notice that we lacked creative midfielders? It was glaring after the world cup that our midfield needed reinforcement..What did Rohr do about it? How many new midfielder did he invite? Ebere Eze was in form and available for grab last year, did Rohr look his way?? He took 4 midfielders to the AFCON and u say it wasn't his fault!! Na wa o 3 Likes |

Curtisaxel7:Etebo has been our best player in this tournament. Why would Rohr bench him? I agree Mikel should've started or maybe come on as a sub but not at the expense of Etebo. I'd have benched Samu(or Iwobi) and played a midfield 3 of Mikel - Ndidi - Etebo. 1 Like |

Nigeria 1 Vs 2 Algeria: 5 things we learnt from Super Eagles’ loss in AFCON 2019 semi-finals pulse.ng Jul 16, 2019 4:33 PM Some observation from Nigeria's loss to Algeria in the semi-finals of AFCON 2019. Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to reach the final of AFCON 2019 after a 2-1 loss to Algeria (CAF) Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to reach the final of AFCON 2019 after a 2-1 loss to Algeria (CAF) The goal came with the last kick of the game that was going into extra-time after Nigeria had come back from 1-0 down-courtesy of an own-goal by William Troost-Ekong in the first half- with an equaliser from an Odion Ighalo penalty. These are five things we learnt from the game. 1: Dearth of quality in the goalkeeping department Daniel Akpeyi failed to save the Super Eagles against Algeria (Getty Images) Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Algeria on Sunday highlighted the dearth of quality in the Super Eagles goalkeeping department. Daniel Akpeyi was the first choice at AFCON 2019 which turned out to be a failed experiment. Against Algeria, he was at fault at both goals that Nigeria conceded especially the second which was directed at his side, away from the wall which he set-up before Mahrez’s freekick. Akpeyi never showed that he was Nigeria’s answer in the goalkeeping department in any game in AFCON 2019 and with Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa also tried and unproved, the search for Super Eagles number one goalkeeper is truly on. 2. Ndidi not at his best with the Super Eagles Getty Images Wilfred Ndidi was not at his best for the Super Eagles against Algeria and the whole of AFCON 2019 (FADEL SENNA/AFP/Getty Images) A great team is often made by playing to the strength of it’s best player but this is what Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr has failed to do with his team. Wilfred Ndidi, the only player who is in the conversation with some of the best in the world in his position is unarguably the best player in Rohr’s tea, but the coach’s failure to play to his strength has hindered the Super Eagles. Rohr’s 4-2-3-1 setup although the tournament has stopped Ndidi from doing what he knows how to do best, which is the sit in front of the defence and display his tackling brilliance. Instead, the Leicester City star is required to be more on the ball and press further up the pitch with his midfield partner Oghenekaro Etebo. This setup against Algeria made Ndidi very uncomfortable, he was very unimaginative with the ball and his constant pressing made him lose the focus of defending in front of his back-four. Rohr must make Ndidi go back to his basics to bring out the best in him for the Super Eagles. 3. Quality won CAF Riyad Mahrez showed quality to win the game for Algeria (CAF) In Algeria, the Super Eagles got their stiffest challenge of AFCON 2019 and lost to a better team. It was quality that got the better of the day. Quality in coaching, organisation and player. Mahrez, unarguably the best player on the pitch who won the game for Algeria to live up to his name. He showed his class by dribbling past Jamilu Collins before his cross which was turned in for an own-goal and it was him who also stepped up to score from a freekick with the last kick of the game. 4. Rohr fails again AFP Rohr's Super Eagles were not inspiring at AFCON 2019 Super Eagles boss Rohr has been heavily criticised following Nigeria’s loss on Sunday and a look at the job that Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi has done will show that the criticisms are justified. After a disastrous 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign where they lost to Nigeria, Belmadi took over in August 2018 and it took him less than a year to do his work on the team. Algeria have been the best side in AFCON 2019. A well-organised, drilled and tactically-aware side that plays with enthusiasm and vim. It is what we are yet to see with the Super Eagles under Rohr. 5. Mahrez shows Chukwueze what he could be CAF Samuel Chukwueze (CAF) Samuel Chukwueze has been the Super Eagles revelation of the tournament following especially after his Man of the Match performance against South Africa in the quarter-finals. Algeria paid very close attention to him, denying the Villarreal star the space to create havoc and ended up making him ineffective. If he is to go ahead and fulfil his potential, he must look at Mahrez who played the same role as him for the opposition team. Chukwueze possesses similar skill sets as Mahrez as they both left-footed forwards who play on the right side of the attack. Mahrez didn’t run the game from start to finish, what he did was pick his moment to show his quality in defining moments. It was what Chukwueze couldn’t which showed their difference in class. |

When all is said and done, when everyone is tired of using the benefit of hindsight to offer expert advice on who Rohr should've played, these facts still remain; 1. We had our best players on the pitch! 2. With all our weaknesses in full exploit by the Algerians we were still yet on the brink of going into extra time where due to fatigue anything could've happened. 3. Most importantly ANY proper goal keeper (premier league standard) would have saved that particular free kick. In fact the best goalkeepers would have not only saved it, they would have caught and held it. I can elaborate on this claim for those who may not get it. When defending a free kick as a goalkeeper YOU direct how the wall is set up. You ask the wall to cover one side of the goal area and you take responsibility for the other. If the kick goes over the wall and into the net (on the side of the goal being covered by the wall) then you hold your hand up and say well played. Getting the ball up over the wall and back down like that is not an easy skill to master. Mahrez didn't have to do that. If the kick is aimed in the area of the goal where the goalkeeper is supposed to be guarding HE is expected to deal with it. With this in mind a good goalkeeper would have been positioned well enough to save that shot. This is evidence that the cliche you cannot win anything without a keeper has some fact in it. Not laying the blame on our failure on Akpeyi's doorstep but this is a cause and effect analysis of why we got knocked out the way we eventually did. 3 Likes |

Why Nigeria Lost My observation You can add yours 1 Gernot Rohr lacks technical dept to coach super eagle 2 in three year Nigerias football does not have a clear cut playing pattern 3 two years ago Algeria was ranged africa no1 Nigeria finish them 3-1 in uyo thanks to victor moses and co. They could not stand us. two years on we couldn't stand them even cameroon it took personal brilliance and determine for us to win. Simply put our team has retrogress no improvement 4. Three years on we are still crying for the lose of Enyeama. The coach has not been able to give us a keeper. With all due respect akpeyi enzenwa and uzoho are not our best How do you take a keeper to world cup and now he is 3rd choice. Akpeyi is so shaky he doesn't inspire confidence. How did he became no1 when he is 2nd keeper in his club in fact last season he only played just 6 game for his club. What happen to fine keepers like afolokai here in nigeria 5 Gernot Rohr is killing Nigerias football do you mean no single home base player is good enough. Clement westerhof and keshi won afcon with local players. In 2013 sunday mba an unknown local player score the winner. Under Rohhr he may never even make the reserve list 6 algeria and senegal are in the finals with local coach. they and senegal used local coaches to beat foreingn nigeria and tunisia coaches. Its no longer oyibo coach era. Its about competence. Look at the resumee of siasia and amunike compare to rohr what has he achieve before coming to nigeria 7. You can expect to win champoions league or EPL with a mid table mentality coach like David Moyes. So nigeria can't win world cup with Gernot Rohr. Nigeria is too BIG for him. Imagine him celebrating semi finals.calling our team inexperience. A team we beat Algeria juat 2 years ago. Are we improving or retrogressing. Infact Rohr lack tacticks do youi know algeria scouted us with 7 coaches and nutrilize all our key player. Chukweze had 2 men standby on him. Didn't you wonder with his man of the match performance in the prevous game, he could not make a single cross. Ighalo was cut out from any form of ball supply. He only manage to score penalt) And yet Rohr could couild only look like PE master. Knowing nothing to change Abeg excus us the reasons why algeria won Egypt didn't wait for grammer they did the needfull we should follow suit Look inwards our league and also our best coaches cc robosky02 3 Likes |

wayodude: Tell me one thing I didn't say prior to the match with Algeria. Weakest links were the Full/ Wing back positions left and right. One had no pace and the other had average pace and no football intelligence but both were slower than the players they were going up against. Akpeyi is not great but he did make one very crucial point blank save after Omeruo messed up. We lacked creativity in the midfield the strongest area of the team. Iwobi lacks the ability to drive the team forward with creativity. However the work rate of Etebo and Ndidi covered a multitude of sins. Our CB' s are not ball playing and under pressure lack composure. The weak links compounded the problem. 3 Likes |
