Rohr turns to Okoye to solve Super Eagles goalkeeper crisis

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is looking at the direction of Fortuna Düsseldorf II safe hands Maduka Okoye to solve the goalkeeper problem in the national team.

Super Eagles are yet to get a consistent replacement since Carl Ikeme's football career ended due to illness in June 2017.

Francis Uzoho was packaged to the 2018 FIFA World Cup where Nigeria crashed out in the group stage, but he has since fallen the pecking order in his career.

At the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Rohr used Daniel Akpeyi as first choice, while aslo giving a chance to Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, but the problem in the goalkeeper department is alway obvious.

Rohr is now looking for a lasting solution, and Maduka seems to be attracting his attention.

“My aim is to improve all the departments in the team. The most important ones are the goalkeeper and then the goal scorer, they are already two challenges now, we’ve been working on it for a long time now,” Rohr told Sports Extra.

“We knew the problem in the goalkeeping department before the AFCON, and that it could be a big problem at the AFCON.So, the bronze medal is really an achievement and we could have even gotten to the final. When you go to the history of winners of AFCON, you must be good in this position, you must be very good and I think we can be.

“So, for the goalkeeper position, we have Maduka Okoye, who plays for Dusseldorf; he will be a good one (keeper), I think.”

19-year-old Okoye has a dual citizenship and is eligible to play for either Germany or Nigeria.

He was invited to the U-23 national side for an Olympics qualifier earlier in the year but club commitments held him back.

Aribo for me is a battler and hard man in the midfield similar to Ndidi not the most skilful and technically gifted he reminds me of a certain Etuhu that played for Nigeria.

Onomah and Eze are technicial gifted players with Onomah the better of the two for now, who can play as AM. Also you have Ovie who can not be ignored excelled in Glasgow Rangers in a league that's not as good as the Championship by a considerable stretch.

The dark horse that is going to suprise all of you this season in my speculative opinion is Chuks Aneke now at Charlton.

However, I fear for his lack of experience against more formidable opposition. When I remember the blunders of Uzoho and Akpeyi, i am reminded of the fact that GKs playing in lower leagues may just be disasters waiting to happen.

But if we must stick to Maduka (again, not a bad move), I feel we must rid Alloy Agu of his Job and find a more capable GK trainer. Someone who can make diamonds out of rough gemstones. That person is certainly not Alloy Agu. The man is bereft of Ideas.

Rohr should keep in mind to scout more creative players and not destroyers. Any new destroyer invited must be adding something to the attack either in way of set-pieces or long shot accuracy. Not just bland tackles that could cost free-kicks against us in dangerous positions

Because English leagues are not known for their patience with youngsters either in the Premier league or championship. Add to this the high intensity and physicality of both leagues and any teenager that still performs is worthy of effusive praise.
