Government should slash the import duty on cars so Nigerian can benefit from the consumer side of global trade.

Also, the once prospering car market can also be revived

Honestly, that import duty is killing auto business a lot

Why are people making the dumping ground statement?

It is not like Nigerians can afford brand new cars. Is this not the country where people buy 2003 cars and call it "brand new"?

There will always be market (demand) for fairly used things. If they are clean title cars, we are good to go. This is me addressing the "dumping ground" talk.
I think you should address the dumping ground more economically inclined that looking at the general meaning of the word.
China is very economically strong at the moment.that means more of its people are making more money than they need,so they will sell things that they have used cheaper than every other state.
Naira on the other hand is relatively strong to the yuan than it is to most other major currencies, money degree differences included in this statement.
So what do you think will happen when the Chinese open it's used cars and products market to the Nigerian market?
Of course more Nigerians will go to China to buy used commodity than they have ever before or would from any other country thereby flooding the Nigerian market with commodity(especially cars) used in China.
So doesn't that validate the dumping ground statement?
Even flooding markets with brand new products(cars,electronics,etc..) Is still regarded as dumping economically,if it is too cheap to purchase by other countries(basically import)
So whoever made that statement was right.
Correct me if I'm wrong though.

With how buhari has killed this country, how many people can afford new cars assembled in Nigeria. Even you can you yourself afford 14m plus for a Toyota yaris? How many companies do you see buying brand new cars again? Even banks are buying tokumbo. Metcheew.
Our purchasing power has been destroyed. Nigerians cannot even afford brand new Chinese cars.

Therefore Nigeria is a third world country with majority illiterates

How long will you blame your leaders for?
The private sector is the biggest employer of labour in Nigeria.
How did those private investors do it?
It's high time we started thinking in this country.

Lol, Oga , there is a reason countries protect their local industries even when it’s not existing. That protection is why China and India can even make cars today.

Most Nigerians can't even afford 3rd hand cars let alone tokunbo cars. Brand new cars for many Nigerians na no go area. Even the few you see driving luxury cars are actually driving good grade tokunbo luxury cars.

Poverty don finish Nigerians kpatakpata. All those ones making noise that you can buy brand new car and pay in instalments. You want to buy a car of over 3 or 4 million and be paying for how many months exactly, abi you forget say you go dey maintain and service the car? Abi no be the same Nigerians way dey always find cars wey no chop fuel? Lol...people wey get over 900 to 1.5 million to.buy car but nor wan buy fuel...na God go really punish our leaders. Almost everybody dey use their cars carry passengers for bustop now....owu wan kill them.

face value comment without recourse for practicality as usual.... A country with a staggering margin between the poor and the rich. Until 1998 before the Democratic blood money emergence the society had the wealthy, rich, middle class, and poor... Today u are either wealthy, rich or very very poor... U can't apply ur books to our nation now.. If u try it u will self destruct..

Common sense and the mind to put urself for a second in the shoes of ur subjects and voila solutions will spiral in..

The average 2003 Japanese car will give you higher value than a brand new Chinese car. A used Chinese car is worse than scrap metal but then Nigerians have to learn from their mistakes as usual

The reason why China is a manufacturing power is because the Chinese invested in techincal and vocational education.

In Nigeria, not only do we not invest enough in education as a whole, but we tend to look down on technical and vocational education. Instead, we go to school to get a certificate to work in an air-condtioned office till we are 60 years of age.

Because of that, we don't have enough technicans, and quite frankly, if you want to build a strong manufacturing sector...especially heavy manufacturing, you HAVE to have enough technicans . Here in Nigeria, a guy or gal who goes to techincal school is an 'illiterate, a neer do well'

Another thing is our resources. The truth is, our resources are being misused....because all we do is export them to industrial countries and share the money. And the truth is, the money we earn from selling resources like crude oil, etc...is not as much as what we would have earned if we were an industrial nation. And to make matters worse, after sharing the money, we then go and import stuff we should be making at home....wasting more forex, and stifling industrial development.

And the funny thing is, most Nigerians prefer to vote for parties like PDP and APC , who have no idea about how to sort out our economy. Both parties have no idea about how to make Nigeria an industrial power. No plans on how to invest in techincal and vocational education. Instead, all they argue about is how to share money, and how the sharing formula should be done.(That;s why I don't support the calls for true federalism, secession, national confrence, even Islamic sharia, ruga and so on...it's all about how to share money, and less about how to take the hard decisions to get us away from industrial dependency).

If we want to be an exporter of cars...well, let's start by reducing import duties on components for our automotive industry, deregulate the power and petrol industry..so that we can attract more investors who would build the infrastructure that would fuel our industrial development...and more importantly...stop pretending that we are a rich nation.

And let's for once , stop looking down on technical and vocational graduates. That you work in an office with air condtioning does not mean you are better than the person who works with her hands.

No be today.
I have been importing China used vehicle to Nigeria since 2010.
Automotive1:

World's biggest automotive market, China, has commenced the export of used cars to Africa, Asia and Europe, with Nigeria among the destinations for the first batch of 300 cars.

According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, the first batch of the 300 exported used cars, which comprises brands from Land Rover, Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Trumpchi, King Long, Yutong, Zhongtong and WOHO, have a total value of $2.5 million.

They second hand cars are being taken to destinations that include the Lagos port (Nigeria), Sihanoukville Autonomous port (Cambodia), Rangoon Port (Myanmar) and Vorsino and Saint-Petersburg ports (Russia).

Until now, the world's biggest automotive industry had been uninvolved in selling used cars abroad. A statement obtained from China’s Ministry of Commerce, said:

Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Economically, there is something called COMPARATIVE COST ADVANTAGE. That is what China and some other (Asian)producing-countries have.

You just don't clamp down on importation because you think it is the smart thing to do and go ahead to start producing locally.

Can you produce effectivaly locally?
Can you balance price and meet up with demand?

A country like Nigeria that can't even boast of 5hrs electricity across the nation, not forgetting other indices that facilitates basic production, let alone that of cars...should fix her affairs first. After that, we can cry about dumping.

Till then, this is a greek gift, we know, but we can't reject it.
