vaxx:No news here because Ghana Atomic Energy Commission is a global leader in nuclear research The Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has lauded the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) for its cutting edge research and training which has placed Ghana at the forefront of global efforts to convert high-enriched uranium fuelled research reactors to low-enriched uranium fuelled ones. In August 2017, Ghana became the first country, outside China, to successfully complete the conversion of this reactor type, and the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission has been training scientists from other countries to convert theirs. Speaking in Accra on Tuesday, 30th July, 2019, Vice President Bawumia indicated that Ghana is committed to global efforts to ensure the responsible use of nuclear technology, and would continue to uphold international treaties guiding their use. “High-Enriched-Uranium-fuelled research reactors could become a potential source material for nuclear weapons. The threat of terrorism legitimises this concern, and the solution worldwide, underpinned by the principles of non-proliferation, is to convert all highly enriched uranium-fuelled research reactors to low enriched uranium-fuelled research reactors. “In this regard, Ghanaian scientists in collaboration with Scientists and Experts from the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) of the United States Department of Energy (US DoE), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and China Institute of Atomic Energy, undertook the process of converting our high-enriched uranium fuel reactor to low-enriched uranium fuel one. “By this feat, Ghana received an outstanding performance award from the National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Energy of the United States of America (USA).” Vice President Bawumia gave the commendation when he commissioned a Low-Enriched Uranium Core Research Reactor; International Miniature Neutron Source Reactor Training Facility; and the Laboratory Building for the Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute of GAEC at Kwabenya, Accra. The Vice President disclosed that Government, three months ago, released funding to support the site selection process for the establishment of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) to generate electricity. “Cabinet has also approved the setting up of an Organisation to oversee the construction and Operation of Ghana's first Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and believe it will also help our quest to achieve some of the sustainable development goals, specifically, Good Health and Well-being, as well as Quality Education, which will transform our world.” The Vice President had high praise for the work in radiation medicine, cancer research, medical imaging, diagnostic molecular biology and nutrition undertaken by scientists at GAEC, which are having direct positive impacts on daily lives. “I wish to congratulate the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) for its contribution to the development of the country through the application of nuclear science and technology in the areas such as Health, Agriculture and Industry. I am informed that it was through the efforts of the Commission that the two Radiotherapy Centres at Korle-Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals were established for the treatment of Cancer. “I have also taken keen note of your research in irradiation, which would prolong the shelf life of such staples as yam, maize, and beans. This would go a long way to reduce post-harvest losses,” he added. The Government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is committed to enhanced and accelerated scientific study, Vice President Bawumia assured, recalling that this was the first time in over 40 years that a President or his Vice had visited the facilities of GAEC and provided this quantum of support for scientific work at the nation’s sole nuclear research institution. |

TayserMahri:The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) organized a program that hosted a ten member team from Nigeria at the International Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR) Training Facility (IMTF) in Accra, Ghana. The Centre Manager of the Nuclear Reactors Research Centre (NRRC) under the National Nuclear Research Institute (NNRI), GAEC, Dr. Henry Cecil Odoi said the objective of the program was to train member states who operate MNSRs outside China to convert their Research Reactor fuels from Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) to Low Enriched Uranium (LEU). According to him, efforts were initiated in 2006 to convert the Chinese-designed MNSR in Ghana from HEU to LEU fuel. ‘The Ghana Research Reactor -1 is the first of five such MNSR reactors outside of China to have been converted and the HEU core returned to China”. He added that through a collaborative work between Ghana, USA, China and the IAEA, the HEU core was removed from the reactor in August 2016 and a new LEU core installed. ‘The Nigerian’s MNSR is the next to undergo conversion of the core and Ghana is hosting them for series of training sessions to help equip them with the requisite skills to carry out the activity’, he explained. The head of the Nigerian team, Dr. Hamisu Abukari Admamu in an interview said, their research reactor which was commissioned in February, 2004 will be converted from HEU to LEU. According to him the training sessions will help them prepare for the conversion process. He commended the efforts of the supervisors and facilitators for giving out their best to his team. A specialist at the International Relations Department of the SOSNY R& Company, Russia, Ms. Irina Shatalina, who together with her team offered technical training to the Nigerian personnel expressed satisfaction at the rate of progress made by the Nigerians so far. She intimated that she was confident the Nigerians would be able to convert the core within the stipulated period at the end of all the training sessions without assistance. She also expressed gratitude to GAEC for the immense support given her and her team during the training sessions.... source. Ghana Atomic energy commission . |

TayserMahri:Kenya is thinking in the right direction..... so what has kenya done so far with her study? A 12 member delegation from Kenya has arrived in Accra to understudy the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) in its application of Nuclear Technology. The delegates who will be hosted for a week are representing various institutions including Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO), Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board (KNEB), Kenyatta University (KU), Kenya bureau Board (KeBS), Kenya Industrial Research Development Institute (KIRDS) and the National Commission for Science Technology and Innovations (NACOTI). The training saw participants through various modules including Strategic Action Plan, Business Plans and a comprehensive tour of the various science laboratories. The Chief Scientist at the Kenya National Commission for Science Technology and Innovations, David Otwoma who doubles as a team leader of the delegates expressed delight at the technological advancement of GAEC. According to him, the decision to visit GAEC was informed by its impressive advancement in Nuclear applications as acknowledged by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He added that, the information they have acquired so far exceeds their expectations and will help enrich their knowledgebase in the application of nuclear technologies back in Kenya. The Director General of GAEC Prof. Benjamin Nyarko noted in an interview with GAEC Press that, the World including the International Atomic Energy Commission (IAEA) is preaching sustainability for National Nuclear Institutes in Africa; an IAEA project dubbed “RAF 0047”. According to him, the IAEA RAF 0047 initiative requires that, pragmatic steps are taken to sustain the operations of National nuclear institutions in Africa. He disclosed that, as some African IAEA member states are working towards signing their first Strategic Action Plan, the commission is currently on its fourth Strategic Action Plan. He added that, GAEC’s quest to support all member states that knocks at its door is in line with IAEA’s initiatives to ensure sustainability with respect to Nuclear Institutions in Africa. Prof. Nyarko described GAEC as a “one stop shop” in the West African Sub regions where member states can acquire the needed support in the application of nuclear technologies. He said, the commission has the human capacity. source . Ghana atomic energy commission |
