Can Nigeria Mechanical Engineering Manufacture Car Engine? by compton11(m): 2:30am On Jul 19, 2019 |
We know all those cars made in Nigeria and Africa are just Assembled, and I'm thinking that despite how many students graduate from mechanical engineering every year, still we are not be able to manufacture something like Car engine. |

You need lots of money in billions of naira for research alone.
The alternative is copy and paste |

The precision is very high.. Try loosing that small carburetor of a motor bike or petrol generator and see creativity/engineering ingenuity. |

compton11:Our leaders are too handicapped to achieve such a feat . The weight of that responsibility alone on their shoulders will paralyse them. Also don't forget we have rulers not leader. Rulers don't carry responsibilities they oppress, leaders are the chief servants of the society. That's the difference between the white and black. Why is Ajaokuta so elusive.? And remember the difference in the mental voltage of of the two worlds. |

compton11:exactly if you have leaders. The leaders are the pathfinders and they have the resources too. |

compton11:but funding is the issue, beside its more of the work of investors rather than that of engineering grads. Also you will look at the side of patronage |

compton11:there are many things to look at. if you are building an engine, first you have to partner with a car manufacturing company because right now Nigerians don't buy brand new engines. 2 you can't just start manufacturing engine anyhow because you have to meet a car specification and there are a lot brands and models and so on. also there are limited number of car manufacturing company in Nigeria |

Blakjewelry:Car manufacturing in Nigeria are just assembled |

Well, if manufacturing a car to you is making "engines", then most top brands don't manufacture cars. You see, those Nigeria companies you claim assemble vehicles are also manufacturers. Pick any top Five brand of vehicles, from Mercedes to Toyota and select different models of this vehicles and research on the quantity of parts manufactured by the brand. In most cases, what they do is what you term as "assembling". Even top Airplane companies like Boeing and Airbus dont manufacture the engine used by their planes. They rather install an engine built by Rolls Royce, General Electric or any other company that fits their needs on their planes, while they don't manufacture a good portion of the parts. As far as I'm concerned, Nigeria companies that make cars are manufacturers. If you think otherwise, then its safe to say there's probably no car manufacturer on earth, all of them simply assembles - since they don't manufacture every part used by their cars. |

Ayemileto:I understand u bro, atleast those engines they are using are manufacture in Europe and America, but we Africans should have companies like that. |

It can begin with you bro, but you forgot that Asia also manufactures engines. The best solution to this, is for the government or NGOs to sponsor interested candidates since they cannot provide a single equipped engineering institution that can train it's citizens on that. It pains me a lot. Swashy: |

Less than 10 countries in the world manufacture cars from scratch to finish. The rest assemble. There are many things to make beside cars. For example, there are countries that don't manufacture cars from scratch but manufacture aeroplanes. Countries specialise in what they can make cost-effectively. That is why Americans import phones and telecom equipments from China and Korea. And that's why they taught you in your secondary school economics that international trade is based on COMPARATIVE COST ADVANTAGE. 1 Like |
