Security agents believed to be personnel of the State Security Service (SSS) have arrested Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of news website, SaharaReporters.

In a statement emailed to PREMIUM TIMES, an associate of Mr Sowore said the publisher cum politician was taken into custody early Saturday morning.

The statement said, “Operatives of the Department of State Services have arrested pro-democracy activist and the convener of #RevolutionNow Protests, Omoyele Sowore.

“It was gathered that Sowore was picked up at his apartment in the early hours of Saturday.

“Sowore posted a distress tweet at exactly 1:25 am with an eyewitness confirming that his phone was forcefully taken from him.

The tweet read, ” DSS invades Sowore’s”.

“He also tweeted ” Ja p”, confirming his phone must have been seized while trying to raise the alarm about his arrest.

“His arrest and detention are not unconnected to #RevolutionNow, a series of planned protests against bad governance in Nigeria scheduled for August 5, 2019.

The SSS could not be reached for comments as at the time of publishing this post at 4:56AM Saturday.

Mr Sowore was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress during the 2019 election.

He was also the leader of #Take It Back, a political movement which says it wants to rescue Nigeria from corruption and misgovernance.

Mr Sowore’s activism began while he was a student of geography at the University of Lagos. He later led the Student Union in that university.


After his youth service, the activist moved to New York for a graduate degree at Columbia University.

In 2005, he established SaharaReporters with which he has become a consistent thorn on the bodies of Nigerian authorities since then.

In 2018, he formally joined partisan politics, forming the African Action Congress on which platform he sought Nigeria’s number one office.

After he lost that election, Mr Sowore vowed to remain consistent in holding the Muhammadu Buhari government accountable.

In his Facebook page, a publisher of premiumnews and social activist, Solomon Uzoma Okafor, condemned the arrest. His comment reads:

"In the midst of grand corruption and lootings, , worsening insecurity, poor electricity supply, pitiable road infrastructure, sorry state of education and health system, rising cases of gross abuse of human rights, unemployment, poverty, incompetence and abuse of government institutions, Nigerian government has once again stoop quite low to give her citizens reasons to believe that her aims are to have all of us remain silent while they hold our happiness, career and future to ransom."

" No doubts, Nigerians are becoming uncomfortable; tensions are rising. Never in history has nature denied Nigerians messiahs and true leaders at any point in time."

" Nnamdi Kanu rose, they persecuted and almost killed him. Members of IPOB in Nigeria till present continue to live in fear, constant harassment and persecution. They were criminalized and proscribed."

" Now, Omoyole Sowore, after meeting with Nnamdi Kanu in the United States, decided to lead a movement to tell the Nigerian government that enough is enough."

" Today, the young man was arrested. Earlier yesterday, the office of Amnesty International in Abuja was barricaded by government-sponsored protesters for same reason. Shame to Nigerian government."

"In truth, one thing they fail to realize is that you can't be beating a child and still be asking him not to cry. They have pushed Nigerians to the wall. War they are asking for, and war they shall get."

"It is true they have arrested Sowore, but they cannot arrest the never-die-spirit of Nigerians."

Therefore the DSS had to do its duty by taking him in to talk to him. No cause for alarm.
