Why Are Toyota Cars Still So Expensive Abroad? by Homguy(m): 7:39pm On Aug 08, 2019 |
I recently moved to a popular north American country where everyone in naija seems to be migrating to these days. I decided to get a preowned car, and since I had used 3 toyotas that have served me well in Nigeria I decided to try to get a 08-12 Corolla. To my shock the prices for corollas of these years was equal or more than prices for later years of other car brands. In fact, unlike cars like Nissans,Chevrolets ,VWs where prices seriously depreciate with high mileage, high mileage Toyota brands are still more Expensive than most other brands. I used to think it was just the Nigerian bandwagon effect that made used toyotas more expensive So to my conclusion, it's not just about having bad roads in Nigeria, or the careless nature of Nigeiran car owners, nor the cluelessness of our kazeems,... There actually might be something special about the Toyota brand. Maybe it's that rest of mind that it gives you knowing you won't get stranded anytime or anywhere or it's just their branding techniques that has been so successful. If you have any other opinion, please share. 4 Likes |

I have stated the primary reason for that before and it comes down to resale value. Most of Africa buys used Toyota. Since I here is a huge export marker for Toyota, People in the US will buy a car they can resell used without losing a lot of money compared to a Chevy Cruze that will stay on the American market. The third world can afford a used Corolla or Camry but a Land Cruiser is in another class where it is Toyota but sells far less than the American competition on the continent. Those who buy it are not looking at the resale value as the main reason for purchase. In the last ten years Africans are buying fewer 4runner and you will see a drop in volume sold compared to the competition or the cheaper Highlander. 10 Likes |

Leave story jare, its not about African market or what not, its about reliability. I will comfortably buy a corolla or Camry with 200,000miles cos I know it will still serve its purpose. I can't do same for a ford, Chevy or even a Benz. The number of those cars sold as new despite their high prices speaks volume. 9 Likes 1 Share |

OfficialSam: Getting used to darkness doesn't mean we all live in darkness. We all have our preference and financial difference. If anyone has money sitting in the bank, the last thing they consider is the fuel economy and reliability of a Corolla/Camry. $25k car market is huge but not the only market. I want you to pick any model year of a Toyota and compare depreciation to a Jeep Wrangler or Subaru maybe you will understand that some cars are hot in the used market and Africa influenced Corolla and Camry is n big way 2 Likes |

That satchet water "moves market" more than bottled water doesn't make satchet water better than bottled water. To everyman, his desires. Some of us can never be caught in a Toyota. There is no Toyota sedan that can be classified as a driver's car. Motor wey be say if you fire pass 140km/hr,e go be like airplane wey wan take off. Lots of Benz flat booth,V booth whose production ended in d 80s are still on d road. How many Toyotas of that age still dey road by now? 7 Likes 4 Shares |

sultaan: Sincerely i don't understand your points at all. Every auto brand has its fuel efficient and economy models. Honda has Civic and City; Nissan has Primera & Almera; Hyundai has Elantra & Accent, likewise the rest of the auto brands. Hence, your emphasis on Corolla & Camry is baseless and inconsequential. Lastly, talking about the craze over Corolla & Camry serving as preferences for not too financially buoyant folks. Don't also forget there are other models of Toyota (or Lexus) that will give you a run for your money. Please i will advice that, the next time you argue, don't be overshadowed by sentiments. Enough said, let me respond to the BMW dude; hope he owns one and not just a bragger. 5 Likes 1 Share |

erico2k2: What do you mean by 'stronger'? But if what you are insinuating is durability and reliability. I'm sorry to burst your bubbles; Toyota beats your Volkswagen & BMW hands down. The lack of expertise for your prefered brands should tell you that. Anyways, i hope you even own one. I'm tired of braggers on Nairaland Auto & Car talk section. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

sultaan:well, I get your point, sir. But Toyotas would have very low resale value if they weren't reliable. So we Africans won't even buy them of Americans if they weren't reliable or able to take plenty abuse. So its definitely deeper than resale value I think 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Satchet water sell pass bottle water Bottle water sell pass Evian Sparkling water. Bottle water/Satchet water sell pass bottle of Wine. When it comes to 'sales value', Satchet water get am. Ergo, Satchet Water is very reliable and is the best. Educated people argument on Nairaland . 4 Likes 1 Share |

OfficialSam:I asked a simple question, ie durability. No need throwing ur dummy out of the pram yet, teh vast majority of you on here have never ever bought any of these brands brand new so how do you pass judgment beats me,you buy a 10-year-old car that has min 100k miles on it and start talking about durability. You are here talking about lack of Mechanics, mayB you live in one village, wake UP there are good mechanics everywhere, you just need to spend money cos these cars do not come with easy fix and they do not brake down often,.If you are talking of those toyota sold in 9ja as brand new that loses alignnment in 10 days of sale then Im done 2 Likes |

erico2k2: Just hear yourself. You sound confused, so you are the dummy here. Let me school you a bit. Durability is used to qualify a car, and not strength or being 'stronger' as you implied. I don't understand why folks who are not fans of Toyota will always bash and abuse others for their choices. Always claiming that Toyota fans are broke, as if it's easy to own a car in this hell called a country. I know of a few wealthy folks that owns flirt of cars that are all Toyota/Lexus models, and would not buy your German machines for peanuts. It's not about being financially buoyant or not. It is just a choice. Most families have various brands, but will still own at least a Camry or Corolla as their back up plan. Some people have issues trusting other brands because their first car served them well, hence they rather continue purchasing it till the end of time. It's called peace of mind. 2 Likes 1 Share |
