[quote author=oluwarichie post=78505606]Hi Guys, So i have been search NL for a trend to help me in narrowing my option on the next step to take (career wise) living in the U.S and i discovered we don't have a topic like that here and permanent resident/legal immigrant that would need information(s) regarding this subject.

IT and Nursing are two professions that u wont regret if u have the opportunity in western countries. Their services are always needed anytime anyday. As for me, I prefer u go with nursing because of the presence of many hospitals, clinics, mental homes, old people homes in Chicago. Even with a certified CNA, am very sure u will get job as soon as possible with over times and u can progress from the CNA. Also u can do most of those programs online while you go to work. Evanston, Skokie, Des Plaines, Rosemont, Roger parks in Chicago North side all have hospitals someone can start with.

It is very possible but it means u have to start afresh. Psychology and Nursing are completely different thing. Like I said earlier, most people in Nursing career start from the lowest level which is CNA which means certified Nursing assistant, with ur SSN you can register for the course and get certified within 3 months or less than that in Chicago for fees ranging between 800 dollars to 1000(dont know the specific amount). With this certificate, You can work in so many hospitals that required the need of CNA as long as you are eligible to work in USA. From there, u can attend two years community college like Harry S Truman college in Chicago etc, after which u can proceed university for 2 year for ur Bachelor degree depending on the type of visa you hold in USA. This will be very difficult for someone or visiting visa except he or she has already changed his or her visa status

Has anyone seen how the asian, arabs or indian people sorround themselves in any state you find them in the U.S. Its amazing

This is the misconception.
Do you know that we, outsiders, perceive Nigerians as people who stand up for one another. Nigerians also stand up for other black.
I could have gone on and one to elaborate.
It is only on Nairaland that I have read that Nigerians are divided. At least my experience with Nigerians have been outstanding.
Maybe if you get involved with those communities outlined in your post( indian, arabs, Asian) , you will soon discover that they are not as United as you may think.
As the say goes, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

This mexican, indians and Chinese don't work extraordinary or do what we can't do... I remember one time i tried picking up a care giver job the plave is owned by a Nigeria, the pay was even below minimum wage and this America (akata) walks in looking for a job and this my country women wherr offering her an admjn position i just shook my head.... We are so divided that I'm beginning to think in worst in yhe diaspora than back home

I am Congolese. I know a very powerful yoruba lady in the city where I live. London, Ontario , to be precised.
Our sons are classmates in French as a primary language school. And that is how we become acquainted.
The lady and her husband have been living in London for more than 30 years.
I asked her once why she has a white maid instead of hiring a Nigerian as a maid. Her answer was "Too much juju".

Please permit me to ask u two questions. Are a Nigerian or Congolese? Secondly, Do u live in USA?
I asked the first question because u wrote "we outsiders". The way other countries see Nigerians is different from the way we see ourselves. You know Nigerians have many tribes? You could be right in terms of unification but with my own believe, the unification is found most in the northern part of the country compare to Western part of the country.

Secondly, if u live in USA especially immigrants places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago etc u will the unification of Mexicans, Indians, Philippians compare to Nigerians abroad

I am Congolese.
You indicate that the way other countries perceive Nigerians isn't the way Nigerians perceive themselves.

Likewise, I would say the way you perceive those Philippinos, Mexicans and Indians may not be the way they perceive themselves.

I could go on and elaborate how I have witnessed Nigerians standing up for themselves and others Africans. It is just amazing.

I live in Canada but went to school in the US

Don't get me wrong, I have never said u are wrong with u said but am telling u as a Nigerian that unification among Nigerians is mostly common in the northern part of Nigeria compare to the western part of the country. You see these people in the northern part of the country are not the traveling types, they don't travel like other tribes do.

Also, I mean other countries like African countries see Nigeria as giant of Africa this also go along way the way u perceive Nigerians. I have worked in both Nigeria and Latina firms in USA so I saw the differences and I also see the way the Latina pass information to themselves in class as a student in USA most especially in terms of job opportunity.

Na so most of una dey Chicago dey hide abi? Well, me i dey look for new friends ooo if una dey Chicago, kindly PM me and lets meet.

OP, i will advice not to rush into making decisions. I have had people saying go into IT or nursing and i'll be making cool money but my interest never lies in IT.

As for the nursing, they have crazy schedules that can really really be stressful..

I studied Engineering and I have a passion for Engineering and i am starting classes at Darley College(76th and Pulaski) this fall.

Kindly please consider your options clearly and dont rush into making decisions.

For engineering will you advice that one goes back to get his Bachelor's degree or should do Masters or are there courses that can cover for your Nigerian degree??

You're right...it doesn't have to be Nursing.

However, it's one of those fields that Will Never be without a job.

Some people use Nursing as a starters jobs to acquire quick money and some stability before they move on to do other degrees.

You need to hit the ground running

And nursing helps with that

#Fact.

After you have acclimated with the new place, with some experience and some money in your pocket
THEN You may make a switch if you want..

Some switch to accounting

Well, IMHO yes.

As an RN with a BSc in HiT and Epic certification the salary should be $100K plus.

Hours will be 8-5 and you can work remotely.

So yes it has to be nursing.

Else you can try Commercial Airline Pilot. Get your USA training and go to Europe or Asia.

To be honest, it doesn't have to be nursing but like someone said already, it's the easiest field to get into and make a decent living for yourself but you have to be extremely patient and tolerant. They take a lot of bullshiits especially from the old folks and not everyone has such level of patience!
