I am in a dilemma, I got a teaching job in a secondary school immediately after my NYSC (started May 2nd).

I was assigned to take the junior section(JSS 1-3) two subjects and we negotiated 20k/month; during the course of working with them, the principal called me and instructed to be taking the SS classes Physics and Chemistry whenever their main teacher is not around which I refused. The proprietress then called me telling me that the management would take action if I refuse to take the subjects.

I told her I would think about it. I then went to the principal to discuss about the issue and we agreed that, in addition to the two subjects I was taking the junior classes, I would also be taking the SS classes Geography in which was duly informed.

Fast forward to last week Tuesday I was told that my service was no longer needed.

The problem is that my brother's wife is their long time friend, so she called them (owner of the school) and they met n concluded that I should come so that we can discuss but I told her I won't go since they did not call for discussion before telling me not to resume with them.

Please How do I handle this situation because My in-laws is of the opinion that I don't want to work .
should I go back and take whatever they throw at me or just maintain my stance?

look for jobs somewhere else, never go back to that school, because if you do you'll be treated less than a slave especially now they know you have no other option. they might decide to increase your your job and reduce your pay.

You are also wrong to have refused what you were told to do. You just have to go, give them your own term. If not, your hosts will conclude that you don't want to work, hence be ready for your brother's wife. Even if you don't want to continue with them, just go and discuss with them. However, while at it let your self esteem be intact.

Also see it as a way to keep your self busy while you work towards getting a better job.

Don't forget, prayer is the key.

That 20k teaching job will not even improve your cv or value in any way. Except you intend to build a career in teaching, just walk away.

It sounds like the typical supposed private school that just keep using you.

To survive and grow in the "corporate world," you need to first of all work on your ego.
Humble yourself and never demand your rights until you actually have them if you understand what I mean.

You've been taking teaching 3 subjects [2 unnamed + Geography] since May only for them to tell you last week that your services were no longer needed w|o any prior discussion? They seem disorganized, unprofessional and cheap for a School.

If they had any issue w| you, they should've discussed it w| you, but sacking you abruptly [considering you were teaching 3 subjects] w|o doing so kinda means they didn't value you much. I'm a firm believer in being where you're wanted, not tolerated.

Which state is that?

Bros no mind all those people saying you were wrong for refusing. What if that is not your area of strength? Everyone just assumes any teacher can teach all subjects. Funny mentality Asides that, it's also daylight slavery. The workload isn't a joke, as someone pointed out. Writing lesson notes and all. You'll quickly forget the paltry 20k they are paying you and start lamenting.

You sound like a very bright fellow. Don't let anyone make you feel less even your brother's wife. Dust your 'pali' and go look for other jobs. Forget about this particular school, because if you return, hehehe, they will indeed deal with you! Nobody will give you the 'prodigal son' welcome.

Oga know your worth, go out there and apply for other jobs, I'm so sure you'll get a good one in no time. Don't restrict yourself to only school jobs. If you are not careful, they will frustrate your potential and you'll get stuck in the system. Remain optimistic.

Not every work is worth it bro. Some are enslaving. He can engage in other jobs asides teaching nw if he really wants to avoid being idle. Bros, teaching job barely adds value to your CV, if you are looking to work in the corporate world.You can have 15 years experience in teaching, e no mean say you go work with multinational company with it. It's even worse with private schools. Who considers that as work experience? So let's be careful how we advise the young man.

Please don’t go back there .. It’s obvious you are in the science field and now is the right time to look for a better job with better pay cos many schools are recruiting right now .. Go out and search for you schools yourself without your in-law influence and I’m sure you will get one before resumption. Search for “teaching job trends” here and pick your choices.. Don’t go back coz you going back will be More of slavery.. Be a man,check schools around, many schools are looking for you with better pay.

this is Nigeria where we pay exorbitantly for goods at the supermarket but will still negotiate with orange seller /petty traders.
