ednut1: Maybe a bit more, but you're right! Part of our problem as blacks (especially in Nigeria) is nobody wants to be under anyone else...they all want to be autonomous so any benefits derived by virtue of being a ethnic group will come directly to them or as close to them as possible! I laugh when i watch the news on the Niger Delta, and they talk of King so-so-and-so of one tiny tinpot kingdom like that! And coming to Igboland (SE, etc), you normally here of stupid, tiny 'autonomous communities'! |

Deadlytruth: And you are fully certain that everyone who has ever referred to Edo as Yoruba is igbo?? Cause that's the only thing igbos are interested in?? Igbos that haven't finished organizing their own splintered region. I wonder why an igbo man should be bothered about where Edo people are from 2 Likes |

Nice Job, I think what you listed here is the ethnic groups as these are characterized by the language and not essentially culture. Yoruba, for instance, is spoken in all those states but they have different ways, Take for instance, Ijebus and Egbas (Tribes in the Yoruba Ethnic divide from Ogun State) do give their children Oriki like Ashake, Ayinde, Asunle, Akanbi, Abike, Anike, Ayinke and co and Oros and Offas (Tribes in the Yoruba Ethnic divide from Kwara State) Use Aina for both male and female while other Yoruba tribes don't do that. moscobabs: |

pawesome:All languages have different dialects. All ethnicity have communities. there maybe 371 communities in Nigeria, but there are only 12 or 14 Ethnicity/languages . Swedish language has different dialects . Igbo language has different dialects , akwa cross or calabar language has different dialects,Chinese(mandarin) language has different dialects ,Spanish has different dialects . There'll always be rebellious communities in every ethnicity ,and there'll always be rebellious clans in every community ; rebellious chiefdoms(villages) in every clan ; rebellious family member in every extended family and nuclear family(black sheep of family) . For example,Ikwerre may try to distance themselves from igbo group or some igbo group may anatagonize ikwerre for having an unintelligble dialect. Annang may try to distance themselves from calabar group ,Xiang may try to distance itself from Mandarin(chinese),etc. p.s: there's a difference between community , neighborhood, town, city. we may live in the same neighborhood but of different communities or different ethnicity . But who is to say what a community really is ? some people may not even be from the community they think they are from, due to migration and assimilation overtime. In today's fast paced and progressive society, the margins of these terms are continually being blurred and redefined. For example ,a person of igbo origin who is fluent in Yoruba and whose great grand parents migrated and assimilated into Ibadan. The individual's children may bear names such as Ngozi Olatunde or Funmilayo Okechukwu .perhaps some igbo traditions and methods may have been passed from the original great grand parent settlers, which would now be part of ibadan Yoruba culture. and vice versa for a yoruba migrant to akwa cross area. in 200 years ,Amala may also become part of igbo cuisine or japanese sushi can become part of American cuisine.
