Please i need your assistance on okro farming I just want to start what are the things needed and how is the market. Or if u have information about potatoes can I plant it with maize.
I am just starting my own okra farm and learning along the way,but I believe that any farmer that has done cucumbers successfully can tackle okra,if you are not yet ready to do the farm you can stick around and learn with me,I will definitely be posting updates of the farm, sorry I don't have any info on potatoes,we concentrate mostly on horticultural crops that will give better financial returns on small areas of land.

Check out that okra basket, the owner sold it for 2.5k naira yesterday night market in my area. During glut it can sell for 500 naira.

That golden penny flour bag of corn went for 2k,
Also same golden penny flour bag of pepper sold for17k, during glut it could be 10k.

I just started clearing 15 acres of land. 11 acres will be for okro and the other 4 acres will be for water melon.
Okro is just a normal crops that is been cultivated by 65-70% of the farmers here. So the challenge will not be much. They plant without applying pesticides and fertilizers(liquid and solid). I believe I have upper hand than them because I will definitely apply pesticide and fertilizer.
For watermelon, I am still contemplating wether to cultivate it or not. Because less than 5% of the farmers here cultivate it. I may use the space for watermelon to cultivate okro as well because watermelon is technical.

you will definitely have the upper hand if you also use improved varieties or hybrid seeds for high yields,I am guessing that those farmers will be using saved seeds from previous harvest, you can do melon but on a small scale to test the waters, melon cannot and will not be trusted not to misbehave, plant the okra on 1 acre or less batches to ensure continuous production.

I think why not, egusi supposed to be in the same family as watermelon and other melon variety, with good irrigation it's possible.

Thanks

.
For me, I just bury the manure in a furrow I make on the ridge. Then i plant after 2 weeks.

This was exactly the same method I once used, as advised by @Okoroemeka. I dug a hole and buried the manure there.

However, I have a problem with it. Do u think the nutrient in the manure will be available for the veggies, if planting is done say two weeks after burying the manure?

I'm asking cos I've heard such nutrients are "gradually" released to plants, which takes time.

Lemme also ask this, @Farmtech, @Okoroemeka, @Vosquare and other cuke farmers, how many cukes do u think a land space that is a little below half plot can contain?
This is my current farm size and I want to maximise it fully.

(I already have 100bags there, which I'm expecting to contain 200seeds.)

Okay Sir.
Although I know some good performing heirloom seeds from Akwa Ibom but my farm is currently in Ogun State.
Maybe I'll request someone to buy and send to me through waybill.

during October-december last year we did a sack farm pilot on a land measuring 60 feet by 50feet,the land contained 22 rows of 30 sacks making it 660 sacks with 2 crops per sack we had 1320 cukes, with a tight passage of 2 feet and gap in between sacks at 1.5 feet,we harvested 8-9 times and got a total of 43 bags that was sold @#4000 per bag, from that size of land we got a total of #172,000 naira, and this was achieved without any elaborate or fancy irrigation system just hose connected to a bore hole,it saddens me to read comments by some agric analysts that is trying to see farmers using other types of irrigation rather than drip or raingun as stupid fools, all fingers are not equal, some farmers simply cannot afford the cost of setting up an elaborate irrigation system, they use the type that is affordable and gets the job done, drip is the best system I know of,but you don't seriously expect a desperate Farmer to first wait till he has #100+ thousand naira to buy a drip kit before planting, while he knows he can use China water pump and get the job done, only with more labour and sweat.

Mainland, Ma. I know shops where they sell chemicals, but they mostly focus on selling chemicals like Sniper, DDT and others for killing insects and snakes. So far, all the ones I've visited, from Ayobo to Iyana -Oba don't sell fungicides.

All these Zforce and Redforce, plus others to combat DM that people are mentioning here, I haven't seen any.

I'll appreciate the contact. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for this reply. I really appreciate it. Will keep the house updated on how it goes.

On a side note, I gave some Cu999 seeds to a friend to plant around Yaba area. He planted and according to him, after going back again and again to the land where he planted, he abandoned it because he wasnt pleased with the rate of growth (said it was looking as if nothing will.come out of it).

Fast forward to day before yesterday, he called me that he went to the farm he abandoned and the cucumbers grew, even when he didn't apply anything and just abandoned, and he saw "The biggest cucumbers he has ever seen in his life

Sir when it come to size, don't play with cu999. I have not see any variety that can compete with it in aspect of size.

Lol. Why avoid cucumber? All vegetables should be high yield if done well from basil to ewedu to red/green pepper.

I know of a Chinese man who sells green pepper from his farm in Kogi to Abuja monthly for a revenue of at least 3 million delivered in a hilux van.

We are not leaving anything to chance or fate, fresh chicken manure that has been soaked for four days was applied today,it will be our last manure application, npk and foliar fertilizer will take over,we want to make sure that every crop will give it's optimum yield, catalogues by seed co will say one thing,if you plant it u will see another thing, open field planting like this will prove beyond any reasonable doubt the true face of these varieties.
Pls Do you strain the soaked manure before applying? Also do you dilute and what's the ratio? Also thinking of mixing mine with dissolved palm bunch ashes, what's your take on this?
