Pls Do you strain the soaked manure before applying? Also do you dilute and what's the ratio? Also thinking of mixing mine with dissolved palm bunch ashes, what's your take on this?
we don't strain it no need, just add water to get it slurry like and that palm bunch ash is not a bad idea at all,it will stablize the pH level and push much needed phosphorus in the soil.

Green beans, really? Ive never thought t was profitable... How many bags of green beans will be needed to make profitable returns, plus how much land its gonna occupy. That's my issue with beans n okra.

I feel they are just too small to be profitable, except if done in a large scale

well,we have not harvested green beans before, not that we have not tried but for a crop that 1kg is #400-500 naira it will definitely be profitable,if you consider the tight spacing and the no of plants that can be squeezed into 1 plot,I think a 3 day harvest interval of 20-25 kg is possible, then if you scale it up to around 15-20 times it will be harvested you will agree with me that the end result will be interesting.and for okra,we don't have to wait too long because we have it on the field now and time will tell.

everyone is doing only cucumber here in the south.
i need to know veges that do well here.
In Kogi, the common thing here is water melon. Most farmers here do that. Cucumber farmers are rare here.
Leafy vegetables/Green Bell Pepper should do well in the south there but some of us dont recommend a crop because its left for the farmer to decide what is best in their locality.

Some of us prefer perennials. I will for example prefer to opt for an agric bitter leaf farm to a 2-3 months seasonal crop like okro or cucumber.

I tried green beans this season and it did not do that well. Low yield because of shortness/dwarf nature of it. I think I prefer pole variety. It will do well at least 1kg per plant

For southern Nigeria, I think cucumber and pepper, mostly red pepper will command large market and profit.

Produce watermelon, in the south and you will smile.

Market also determine the profitability of any crop grown.

Watermelon, red pepper and cucumber will always have huge market due to consumption rate.

Lettuce, eggplant, broccoli, green beans, green pepper etc have low market demand.

I heard it contains a lot of potassium (potash was actually made from wood Ash), calcium and magnesium so I just had to get it. Also thinking of mulching with this.

opv cucumbers is not a good idea in commercial production,it takes too long to mature 55 days and will have a running battle with DM,find a hybrid that has the same size and shape of the opv like darina,Tokyo or kenzo,or at least don't try pointsett, marketer is the best among the 3.

Wow, please let's not destroy ourselves with our own hands. If using manure the right way is difficult, I would advise we don't use it
We cant twist things to suit our narrative when extensive research has been done to show us the implications of using fresh manure. In fact it can be done in days if a particular temp can be maintained(cant remember) if not leave it for a long time to compost.
It's easier for me because of the poultry farmer I buy from. I buy a bag for 400 excluding transportation.
The cucumbers have produced on my farm, I don't eat cos am not too fond of it, but every other member of my family does. It's one of the reason I stick to PHI of each product. There are times the fruits are big and am told to harvest, I say no especially when the PHI is not complete
The country might not be encouraging, but we can't complain about our leaders and then we also are culprits.
My oga@okoroemeka you will be surprised that if you are committed to it you can compost successfully most especially because of human resources you have at hand. I would encourage you sir to reconsider and give it a try

I just had to quote this. A bag of poultry for #400.. Waoh

Here, the poultry farmer are ready to give it to u because of disposal issues. Only problem I have is carrying it... That thing is DAMNNN HEAVY.

Then, for an half plot farm, u just don't know when your application becomes too much

here a bag of deep litter poultry manure is #1200,pig manure #400,and the battery cage litter is been flushed off because the farm has no effluent treatment system,we are taking advantage of the free manure, the only problem is using it effectively and responsibly.

I see...
Okro and pumpkin are definitely in high demand here.. But so many small scale farmers are doing it...

For me, am looking for a crop to combine with a plantain
/banana farm.

Pepper planting... Hmm.. Am following..

Thank you all

Mainland, Ma. I know shops where they sell chemicals, but they mostly focus on selling chemicals like Sniper, DDT and others for killing insects and snakes. So far, all the ones I've visited, from Ayobo to Iyana -Oba don't sell fungicides.

All these Zforce and Redforce, plus others to combat DM that people are mentioning here, I haven't seen any.

I'll appreciate the contact. Thanks in advance.

I doubt if my mainland contacts have fungicides, u may need to go to the island, there are many other shops in that lane that have.

6-saaf
7-sachets of systematic fungicide

Pls what's the price of worm force and saaf?
Can't find them in my locality.
And also do I need to put those holes by the side when planting on the flat?

Well done OP!
I'm interested in this Cucumber farming, but I've never do any planting before. I have almost everything at my disposal and even a big river which is just 30meters to my land.
I want to give it a trial:
Question 1: Can I substitute Cow dung for Chicken waste?
Question 2: What are likely disease during planting and the remedy too?
Question 3: What's the spacing size?
Thanks.
.
hi did you later set up the farm?

Which of the hybrids would you recommend with good DM resistance and dark skin? And how can I get it? Cuz I've not seen a single hybrid over here.

I've read kenzo F1 has strong disease resistance and dark color.does it get bitter or require other pollinators?

500k in one plot of land is very much possible if you really have a good source of fertilizers and a drip irrigation system,

okro, cocumbers and the most respected called red pepper can really achieve this with time,

pepper!! Pepper!! Pepper!!
How many times did i call you?
You never seems to stop amazing me,

i got this from my sweet mentor here called okoroemeka,

unfortunately we both answer the same native name emeka but not from the same state,

although mine is anambra,

okro!! okro!! okro!!
How many times did i call you?

You never seems to stop amazing me,

and the okro replied- my master who planted me here will be pleased with me,

and guess who the master is,

(okoroemeka the master of all okro plants)

he has a farmland in the east and currently planting crops that are bound to grow and produce good harvest,

i bow my hat for you bro,
you are the best

there is one proverb in igbo land that says if your name is emeka, weather its your surname or just your nickname then you are bound to be as succesful as okoroemeka,

courtessy of been a big time succesfull farmer

Dear Nairalanders

I hope you are having a great month. We have 58 tons of Your favorite NatSoil organic fertilizer left and available for sale.

Please see below 7 reasons why NatSoil is better than the rest

1. NatSoil is better than other organic fertilizers because of it’s high carbon content (up to 91% on a dry weight basis). NatSoil contains naturally available CO(NH2)2 urea, NH4+ ammonium, organic compounds with nitrogen (N) and fatty acids (carbon, hydrogen and oxygen). In the soil the carbon causes those micro-organisms (microbes) that cannot fix carbon themselves (for e.g fungi) to use the carbon for energy & propagate.

2.It contains chitin (about 20% of carbon content), which is the most important carbon compound in soil as it attracts 3x more beneficial microbes than any other organic fertilizer. Beneficial microbes are essential for nutrient/enzyme exchange in crops. Early appearance of these microbes and readily available nutrients for them to feed on ensures they propane faster than non beneficial microbes.

3. Chitin (from maggot skin) in the soil keeps soil PH optimal. it also increases nitrogen over time as microbes expand, die then decompose (allowing crops mineralize N in various forms over a long period of time).

4.Beneficial microbes in NatSoil enable the flow of auxin and other nutrients like protein (from N which is rated at 3%), K (3%), calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum.

4. The increase in soil activity and the readily available nutrients speed up *germination* and *flowering/fruiting process*.

5. We have composted our product to breakdown chitin, carbon, fat, cellulose and Nitrogen such that it is readily available for mineralization by crops. This ensure that our organic fertilizer is high in microbes.

6. The chitin levels in NatSoil are adequate to restrict the growth of harmful microbes and the composting process ensures that only beneficial microbes grow first and crowd out pest microbes, pathogens and insects.

7.Our customers note a remarked difference in growth of the crop compared with any other fertilizer. Customers have seen a reduction in mites, stem borers, wireworms, botrytis species that cause mildew, moulds etc.

8. We produce locally in Epe, composting insect manure from our insect farming operations (we make 50% insect protein meal as our core product).

Please do not miss out on this opportunity to try our product at a low price of N20,000 per ton.

Contact me directly for any orders on 08176499981.

Thanks and kind regards

George

@Okoroemeka and other cuke farmers, I contacted someone for fungicides and he sent me the lost of the ones he has: Ridomil Gold MZ, Ridomil Plus, Cabrio duo, SAAF.

Please, which one should I go for? And considering the size of my land (just below half plot), how many sachets will be enough from start of farming till finish?

Also, I currently plan to plant okra in between the cucumbers, will there be any adverse effect?

ridomil mz is the one specifically made for cucumbers, the PLUS is made for cocoa and other more serious diseases, the mz comes in 250 gram pack@50 gram per knapsack you will get 5 knapsack per pack,so you will need 2 packs to fully cover half plot,at an average of one knapsack per application weekly.and considering the okra planting I don't think it's a good idea, cucumbers are crawling plants and they will smother anything around especially if the soil is fertile and management good,it will cover the okra, okra can go with pepper, garden egg, cabbage, etc.NB,the price of the mz is around #2,500 per pack.

you don't need to buy all at once and keep, when starting a project we have a scale of preference,we get the ones that is needed that particular time like wormforce, then we plant, for 4500 plants you need 2300 holes at 2 gram per hole you have 4.6 kg and it's sold for #1700 per kg pack, you will use roughly 3 bags of rope, for the others just buy 1 pack or tin of everything after using you buy another.for fertilizer just get one bag.
