I am so much interested in this farming system. I even got an acre of land for this purpose. However, when I travel around the country, I see a lot of abandoned greenhouses. Of recent, I saw another one that was really functional being closed down. Please, is it because it is not profitable? I need contributions from expert please. The other time I found a supplier of greenhouse materials, he was begging me for a job, saying I am a big man. This has been delaying me from going into farming.

Our problem in Nigeria is we don't want to do the work but we want to reap the benefit. Yes greenhouse farming is profitable if done the right way.

I read it but I must say I don't know how to apply all these in Nigeria, particularly the heating system. Ate you saying these greenhouses fold up because of lack of maintenance or due to non-profitability?

I am saying that whoever was operating the greenhouse didn't know what they where doing. If you are traveling to Warri from Lagos and you follow the bypass express you will see the huge greenhouses being operated by an investor there. If it is not profitable then why would one invest so much in it?

I think green farming is profitable in our time. Few days ago I bought cool professional chainsaw for my garden and farm works, because I am farmer. Plus I like woodworking too. So, I have now Dolmar PS510 Chainsaw. This saw has good durability, plenty of torque to accommodate an 18” chain bar, and is balanced and safe. Plus I browsed some review about it on bestchainsawadviser.com

Op, be very very careful! It's glamorous but not profitable, don't let anybody deceive you. The best and easiest region for greenhouse farming in Nigeria is jos, come and see abandoned green houses littered everywhere. Save Ur hard earned money or look for another fanciful farming system. 99% of the greenhouse consultants that will contact you are experienced "failed" greenhouse farmers. Its no fault of theirs, the market for greenhouse produce is so volatile and laid with heartbreaking breach of contracts. Forget about all those shoprite baits. I am involved in the chain of distribution. Save ur money

Thank you sir. I thought maybe the operational cost of greenhouse farming is way to high to compete in the market.
Please I will appreciate more opinions.

The only reason those were abandoned was because they were first generation greenhouses imported by inexperienced consultants. What you need to do is to research why they were abandoned. There are reasons behind it, and I am not ready to go into the details, and start giving people who want to spend N10,000 on one acre heart attack. Go do your findings properly sir.

What you don't know, you don't know. You are not a supplier of any grocery store. I am not arguing that you are not in the chain, but you are definitely operating at the bottom of the chain. The person you talked about isn't a producer. He is likely a marketer. And even a marketer of a 4 bedroom apartment along Bourdillon down to Gerrade in Ikoyi may beg you for a job. Is the marketer the owner of the apartment? Stop misleading people. It is absolutely wrong. Stop it.

The operational cost is the lowest of all crop farming. It is very low. Extremely low bro. However, the initial cost is the only issue.

Brother, let me give you a clue: Most ignorant people go for Roma Tomato. Infact, how many people know any other tomato apart from plum and Roma in Nigeria? When eating salad, it Roma. Juice is Roma. Even as snacks, its roma. And it must be red. Must tomato be only red? And I just laugh many times. So, you need to get your marketing set. Without marketing research, entrepreneurs are failure. Bro, must it only be tomato? Nairaland always equate greenhouse to be tomato farming. It's just a pity.

You don't expect me to come online and start "disecting" the details of the business here. Of course not. Even far away in the north where there aren't many of the so called Shoprite and co, there are more greenhouses.

Our population is over 100 million, and in Lagos and Abuja alone...... are you kidding me?

Before you start, go out and make a serious market research. How can you get a good advice from a forum where over 99% Agric section users are trying to use N10,000 to cultivate 1 acre. Where they are messing up their health and risking their lives just to cut down cost. And also, they keep on attacking anyone who tries to show them the way. Even I know 3 good people who they attacked. One is on Instragram making exploits and people are patronizing him selling his organic products.

Do you need to sell to shoprite before making good money, nope. Capital NO. Everyone I have talked to are c.razi.ly maa.d" that they were ignorant of the potentials in greenhouse is so huge.

Two assignments for you:

1. Find out the reason those greenhouses were abandoned. You will notice that about 75% is a particular brand, and the shape and structure are almost same.

2. Get your market research going. You will be amazed what you will unravel.

Finally, do not go for cheap covers, especially those ones from China. Hmmmm! Everyone is an importer these days. Biam...they read online, or get hint, they rush to buy from aliexpress or ...baba. Greenhouse is about radiation these days. And I am not talking about those extremely expensive ...."nated" covers paraded as the best these days. Make your research well, buy the right product. I don't also want to mention any product or give any clue here cos I don't want to arm importers with the knowledge to import cancer radiation covers and net. Over 98% products from China will destroy the health of users. I give them just 12 months, and the damages have been initiated.

This is all I have to say here.

Goodluck bro.

Note:

1. I am not a consultant, I am a farmer. I don't take money for consulting. You can ask here if I have been to the farm of all the people asking me to consult for them. Never. When I can make money on my 1 to 6 plots. Hmmm...Why will I turn myself to a nu.isan.ce consulting around for people who cannot even set up well and pay their staff regularly? Greenhouse farming is profitable.

2. Not everyone who sells greenhouses or disposes them is a broke a.ss. Personally, I love galvanised frame. I can pack it anytime. Go read my thread, and you will understand the reason I am on break now. I sold 5 structures at extremely cheap prices to to fund myself. And I'm telling you, 1 kobo did not enter my hand as income for approximately 10 months. It was recently that some income rolled in because I decided to go against my doctor's advice. lol. But the guy said it's ok when he learned about it. I had to sell my structures to keep life going. And people who had been scratching their heads after talking to me and couldn't set up even after 14 months rushed them. lol.

Someone just told you above, use your head and not your heart. The answers u seek u already have seen yourself.

For the More experienced 'failed' greenhouse consultants quoting me above, I leave this thread for you. I don't know you from Adam, dont take my points personal, the truth is abandoned greenhouses litter the country, and the owners are not stupid or dumb no matter how you paint them, they lost their hard earned money and not yours. However, I don't have time to argue nonsense. Enjoy ur hustle.

I laugh hard when people say they want to understudy. It's very funny. Please, read through my threads. Anything excanny and some other people on this thread, I stay away. I am sure of the reason he mentioned me. And very disrespectful. But, he knows why. Bros/sis, I don't have to prove anything to anyone about anything on nairaland. Excanny who wrote on nairaland that he wants to sink one borehole per acre for 9 acres is a way out. I don't know where he read it that 9 rounds must go before crop rotation is achieved. But I don't argue. Like I always say, interpretation matters. You come forward here, and excanny immediately followed up by calling me. It tells me a lot. I have slammed him many times on my thread. But he is shameless. His desperation has blinded him. Even readers have slammed him too. And he is not going to stop. You know how hungry lions behave? It's like an addition for them to tear apart success because they don't know about the subject..

Oga, I have given you the hints. All the people I guided, they never jumped into buying it. I even wrote that some had to buy my own structure after 14 months. But they had it in their mind to do it after making their own investigations through my guidance. All I did was to show them how to make research. They moved out to market, and they all returned cra.zil.y happy. And the next thing is that I told them to make findings why the greenhouse businesses they have seen collapsed. Then, I gave them requirements to work on. That's all.

How many people can even think deeply? Brother, to make it and be "successfully" successful, you can not be copying around. It's why the word "understudy" "pi.sses" me of. What about sitting down and planning it with your own method. And then be guided along the way.

I don't argue with anyone who says it's not profitable. To them it is not. And fine, I don't disagree. Many people went into salt and sugar businesses before Dangote and failed gallantly. How many successful tomato farmers are here on nairaland? If you ask for opinions, they say it's not profitable. But someone came from the US (Harvard graduate), and he is making it big in it. Did she have challenges? Yes. Bro, successful people roll. I know Dangote consulted her to know the way forward for his paste when it almost crumbled. Lol. Nairaland people and Nigerian governors pushed Dangote into buying raw tomatoes from farmers. And I know the lady now uses Dangote's laboratory to do more exploits. Successful people roll together. And successful people don't need to use their mouth wide opened to say prove beyond reasonable doubt. It's clue and hints. They know how to spot good recomrndations. But there are still some set who can spot, but are "use and dump" people. Naija gets characters. Walahi. Not the fault of them, but that of the economy.

At this stage, I have nothing to prove to anyone. When you understand my lines, it means a lot to me. Then, I know something is deposited in you.

Like I told you sir, stop finding who to understudy or just tell you that greenhouse or any business is good. Go and research it well. Learn to be able to convince yourself that a business is successful or not by learning how to research. And the secret is Marketing research first. No one who deceive you that a business is profitable or not. With thst tool, you know the variety to learn, and not just learn many things. You will be focused. Market analysis is the tool to use to know the kind of crop, cultivars, and nutrients to use. Do not go and just understudy. It's basically stu.pid. Learn to know the crop and cultivar you should do first, and then find someone who knows about it. The fellow may not even have greenhouse. There are many cold loving plants that are damn profitable. Theis is hint for you. Find where to sell them. And then, start reaerching the requirements to grow them. And see how to use technology to tour advantage. Look at sales, and compare with the cost of production. Then, see how to cut of costs nicely without compromising yield. Your job is to achieve optimum production, and not to get the highest yield. Optimum production is different the highest yield.

As a matter of fact I am presently working on poultry. Despite people tell you that vegetables make more profit, I am presently working on it. And if I call one person out here, he will tell you how deep I research. Cos we have been discussing at length. I never asked him to allow me understudy him. And I have been doing is finding reasons for the challenges in the bsuienss. But first, I learned about the challenges with his help. And it's not just by asking him that what are the challenges. I am digging seriously deep. Then, I found out a market for my choice of birds, though, he wants to assist too. All I am doing is working towards achieving a certain weight using certain standard. I did not start asking around bla bla bla bla bla. I am digging deep. Don't get me wrong, I know about poultry, but I overruled it some years back. Things always change. This is the dynamic nature of life. Now, I really need it for some things I am doing. And I want to unravel the mystery behind it. I have already gotten the way forward. The only step is pilot. Do I start arguing with farmers who are making huge cash with poultry when many are crying that the cost of feed is high? No. I know I need it, and I looked deep in it. I know if I ask any questions here, cage sellers will not make me rest. Consultants too will show face. Make no miatake, I had told people in the past too that vegetables business is more profitable. But guy, if I decide to unravel something, I am unstoppable.

Oga, your money that you want to pay does not move me. If you want me to really assist you further, go and do what I asked you to do first. Then, contact me and show me you carried out your assignment excellently. But then, you will have serious questions. And I can answer those serious questions, and possible give you contacts. But I am not going to just hand over myself to some hungry lions who are trying to bait me. Excanny most especially.

Like the so called "failed" marketer who called himself dgitrader, go and check his posts, you will see he is a pusher. Who are pushers? Consultants. He is the successful one in his mind. But just because he doesn't understand covered production doesn't make him successful. It shows we can be limited at times which is ok. But to come out openly to criticise what one failed in says a lot. The person is trying to cope only in routines. Lol.

They attack publicly, and sneak into my email privately to ask for help. Maybe I need to start publishing their mails to start shaming them all. I am not a bad person at all. But bad people have taught me serious lessons. And it's a pity Nairaland is not discouraging it.

Watch the Delarue who is asking you to use your head. Lol. Guy, use your head statistically and mathematically. Then add technology to it. And not use it like his. We are all different. He may be good in what he is good at. But aobviously, he is naive in the area too. Go read about him too. You will know he is not the person you should consult. I can come here to start pointing out their errors with facts and figures. But I will not. They can only attack, but not hold me down. Since I have been writimg, has anyone of them been able to say "Pistotita, this you wrote here is no.nse.nse? Lol. They cannot because they don't understand. It is like a miracle to them. And the next is to try hacking me. I put a stop to that. And then, they want to bait. Lol. Desperate consultants everywhere.

Brother, I talked on your thread because I want to end the foolishness in Excanny. He is a real hungry lion here on nairaland. Very desperate. I don't know why. But from his write up, he has failed in many areas to the extend of going into using rain to cultivate. So, that's the person you want to listen to. Alrightooooo!

Brother, learn to do market research. Why understudy anyone first. You don't even have a clear focus of what to do in it. Or do you expect people to show you their market? I don't understand. Go and do marketing research first, and then return to production. So, it's the person you consukt the will hand over his market to you? Stop looking for consultants. These ones would have used you as toothpicks. But they are failures on it. And failed consultants are hungry lions who destroy businessess they have failed in.

You do not need to understudy me or anyone. Go and work on the issues I raised. You Will Be The One WHO Will Return That ha! Greenhouse is "m.adly" profitable. No one will force you into it. You will look at poultry and hiss. Pig businesses will be of no interest. And you will curse the one who asks you to go into open field. Why? You gat data you got by yourself. And not that you understudy any one who can easily manipulate you. If you like listen, if you like, continue looking for consultants, or farmers who will use you.

And you may choose to listen to these people who don't understand it. Even they all benefit from my open field threads. Lol. Most of them use "juju" to do their businesses. I am serious. You better be careful. And even be extra careful with who you partner or take investment from. Most who claimed to be good christians and Moslims are m.ad set people. It is very common among them to use the destiny of innocent boys on their farms. I have seen a lot. And when they want to understand what they don't know, they bully. None of them will ever near me by the special grace of God. Oga, the more you look for answers on this nairaland, the less you see. You better be careful. Go and do what I asked you to do. I am no more making any comment on your thread. People like excanny are panting around to see who to devour.

There is a thread on making N500,000 cucumber farm on.a plot of land. Since the day the OP started, he has not made it. lol. Hehehe. And I don't understand people how easily they can be deceived. That OP even posted pictures of plants with diseases as a good farm. Yet, they keep following like m.oron.s. They started with cucumber, they failed. Moved to Pepper because the guy is selling seeds (of course I wanted to try the seeds one time, but his answer to one of my questions was a signal thst he doesn't understand himself, and now they are rushing okra probably because they read on my thread that it is a good business..Yet, they never made N500,000 on a plot that they claimed. Go and read almost all participants. Same bunch of funny group. not funny at all. And no one has made N500,000. At the sound of drip, the OP went on rage. Why? If these people start buying drip, they will not have money left to patronize him. Lol. So, the trick is to keep them with hose on their farms in order to continue be the local champ. I salute them ooo. Ha! Stup.idi.ty is really expensive. Damn too costly Mehn! At this age, someone who calls himself a good farmer hasn't tested drip himself, but criticizing it. O boy! Ignorance is a bi.tc.h. And being bold s.tupi.dly is a serious case. Damn. The boy just messed up himself and people who know are just smiling. Oga, do you pray to drive those "danfo" buses? Of course, it's business for many people, but the day you handle a new Benz, you will curse your friend who asks you to buy a used Camry because it is cheap to maintain. Even, buy new Corolla and see the difference with used Benz. you will understand the value in buying new products. But at times, good used could make sense too. Not arguing about that. But my point is that make thorough research in anything you want to do, and make your decision. Do not listen to people who out rightly support or condemn. Let mathematics, statistics, and technology guide you. There arent need for intuition, feelings, and unsupported sugestions in this case. Oh! You better go learn about intuition in my religious thread.

Goodluck brother.

Goshiii:

I am saying that whoever was operating the greenhouse didn't know what they where doing. If you are traveling to Warri from Lagos and you follow the bypass express you will see the huge greenhouses being operated by an investor there. If it is not profitable then why would one invest so much in it?
probably because he is enjoying government grant, it is hoping to attract govt grant.
Truth is, it requires Va lot of investment to farm in a green house. The operating cost alone adds significant overhead cost to your bottomline. Now that overhead has to absorbed into product cost somehow.

Problem is, how many Nigerians are ready to pay that extra money for products farmed in a greenhouse? Apart from the elites, the answer is probably zero. That is why u only see greenhouse produce in large department stores and packaged for export

Thank you very much sir/ma for the exposition. Sorry about your health. Please do you have a greenhouse farm I can understudy? I do not mind paying.
gbam!!!!
No be to dey speak long grammar. If he has a greenhouse for u to understudy, u go there, understudy their operation, marketing and general profitability, and report back to us your firsthand experience.
My verdict, as long as u aim to eventually recover both setup cost and operating costs (like every business man hopes to achieve after a given number of years, before the investment depreciates fully), greenhouse in Naija, right now, is NOT profitable.

Op, be sure there is no link between the health condition that made him post that long rubbish epistle at 3am, and packing off and selling his unvisatable greenhouse

I really appreciate our comments so far. I learnt more. Pistotita, thanks for your analysis and recommendations. I did my research before now and what I came up with is that prices of final products from greenhouse may not be able to compete in the common market. However, what I want to understudy is the operations of greenhouse. There is no where I could do such research except I get real greenhouse. The only place I was hoping to understudy got shutdown early this year.
Can anyone help? Please, I am a farmer, experienced in open field farming. Presently managing 3 acres of plantain and with 6 other acres undeveloped, all are my own. I want to go into full time farming, that's why I am asking all these.

Na wa oo ....
He made a simple request but you're replying him with some very long letter.

Bro, honestly, this your long epistles is unnecessary.

If you can assist him understudy the greenhouse system, please help!

My brother, the truth is bitter. After starting yours, I am certain you will not allow anyone come understudy you. For what? In this present Nigeria?

Apparently, the person you talked about was hoping he would sell products/services to you, or needed the money you want to pay him badly. Or maybe the person is a worker there and not the owner. Just to make some cash for himself/herself. That's the real truth, and eventually, the owner ran out of business as a result of bad administration, or maybe What we dont know about. Even people run out of good businesses. Different strokes for different folks. Such is life.

Bro/Sis, you have not done your research well. Market is the issue. Know the price you want to sell. Then, know the variety of the crop you want to buy. Go ando buy the exact variety, and practise exactly what you want to cultivate on the farm at home. Make thorough research. If you are a farmer, it should not be hard for you to do. No successful person will allow anyone to come understudy him/her.

Open a thread if you need to here, and I will definitely come around to assist you with suggestions. Others are here too to assist you.

In these days of kidnapping? It's not open field we are talking about sir. it's greenhouse farming. If I asked you to pay me for such service, it means that the greenhouses weren't mine, or I was in need of money seriously. I am sure you will understand when you finally get it right. Most people who I introduced it to did not visit me. As a matter of fact, I have never set my eyes on over 95% of people I have trained. I can start mentioning nairaland monikers running to over 50. And many of them got free training when I was free. That's me. I did not bring the skill with me to this world, and I don't think I am going with it when my God says it's time. Market is dynamic. No one is disturbing me.

But I want to say this sir/ma: your question is more of marketing. Is Greenhouse profitable? That's more of marketing research. So, I am curious why you are saying you want to understudy operations. And that you are a farmer you say you are...hmmm? I have seen a lot in this life sir. If you had carried your due deligent research, why didn't you tell the broke as.ses farmers that you had carried out a thorough research and you know it is profitable. And all you need is operational skill. But you asked if it is profitable. So, I was wondering what's up. And now, you are contradicting yourself.

Finally, I don't understand why excanny had to call me out on your thread. Looks fishy to me. I deliberately decided to address the issue squarely. If excanny and his gang do not stop this nonsense, they will be shocked what I can pull. I just pray all of you calm down on this nairaland, and stop ganging up. I am a gentle person minding my business, and trying to teach who want to learn.

Oga, I have given you what you need to do. It's straight forward for any farmer. All it takes is proper research to learn the rope of the business. Find out the variety you need go cultivate, buy it, get your pots, and start at home. Learn prunning, and know how to fertilize accurately. You can do it. The Internet is so filled with reaources. Everything I know, I know through self study. And I use whatsapp to communicate with people I know that are good in the field. And they are willing to assist me. After I was able to build trust to a level, they allowed me into their carcus. Na so life be. Not that you just approach people online to go understudy their farms in this present day of Nigeria. And I have assisted many people via the method too. Excanny Beware of your bad Belle. I have given you the very last warning.

Good luck!

u are just pathetic. From my experience, people like u who go about attacking everyone that does not hold their point of view are usually those to be wary of. They are insecure because they know they are trying to sell lies to other people. So anyone trying to stop them from selling lies becomes an instant enemy.
People who hold real value and integrity will never act the way you are acting.
