the major reason the team was behind possession wise at the last afcon was the lack of a quality cm/b2b who can calm the pace of the game or high the tempo when there is need. there is no way a team will have high % of possession when you lack a good ball playing cm/b2b and defensive midfielder at the same time Earthquake1: |

exactly, in such situation thats were you see the best of a good central midfielder/box to box midfielder. his talent and passing range will come in to play to detect and conduct play. the major culprit to this regard in the team is etebo but i won't blame him because he has never been a polished and refined player but what works for him is his agility and work rate. the perfect fit at the afcon would have been john obi mikel but with etebo's absence ndidi will be vulnerable and over worked as well because mikel lacks that energy to cover grounds up and down the pitch. super eagles biggest problem is the lack of a decent CM Earthquake1: |

alot are clamoring for a number 10 who will bring flair and trickery but with alex iwobi in that position we are covered. days are gone when players like jj were tolerated by coaches, nowadays coaches go for AM midfielders who are more direct, purposeful with good passing, shooting abilities and high work rate. the aforementioned qualities is why no big club tried to get jj even when his talent was obvious. if jj was more direct with good work rate he would have been the best AM to grace the game with his presence. super eagles biggest problem currently is the CM position 2 Likes |

Gernot Rohr has explained the reasoning behind his decision to leave some players out of his squad for the upcoming friendly game against Ukraine next month The coach stuck to most of the players he used in prosecuting the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations bar the quartet of John Obi Mikel, John Ogu, Daniel Akpeyi and Odion Ighalo. Their spot in the team was handed to Joe Aribo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Maduka Okoye and Semi Ajayi with two of the aforementioned players in Aribo and Okoye earning their first call up to the team. Explaining his decision to leave out some players, the coach explained issues like retirement from the team like in the case of John Obi Mikel played a role in his decision while John Ogu need to sort his future out. ” Our captain has retired from international football and we need to replace him and some players are also sorting their future with their club football. So we called players we have been following for some time now”, the coach said. Speaking on the exclusion of some players who are presently doing well for their respective teams, the Franco-German coach said consideration was given to the U23s when the list of players for the Ukraine tie was released. ” You know some players are with the U23s, so we can’t call them here to disturb the program of the coach. We will be watching the team for players who can also play in our team and some of our players will also play with the team”. |

Earthquake1: Stay within context. is my original post about Etebo or about getting a creative midfielder? Nigerians (some) sha. If I believe Etebo was our solution, why then am I looking for a fix in the midfield? This thread is dropping daily with the quality of discourse being discussed and sustained. We leave points (major discourse) and start banging on sidetalks. Make I go back to reading jare. Hopefully this thread will rise again soonest |

charlesemeka85: Etebo can play as a box to box midfielder too.. that was the role he played during his short stint with las Palmas in laliga...he played that role against Algeria during the wcq and was good! Rohr is trying to use him as a holding midfielder and its not working ..the fact that Etebo was one of our best player at the world cup and AFCON is proof of how good he is 1 Like |

Danielnino00: You have no evidence to prove what you have just said, maybe it's his lack of abilities is restricting him to defensive contributions Is Rohr also restricting him to defensive midfield at Stoke city, if he played so well at the world cup was he remembered for his abilities WITH the ball like(assists, commanding the midfield or goals?) Or was he remembered for his abilities WITHOUT the ball like (energy, tenacity and marking) |

As long as he is either deployed as a CM,DM or AM depending on how his coach set up the team’s play, I don’t see the substance in this argument. Unless we are arguing how Rohr will utilize him. Why don’t we wait and see? charlesemeka85: |
